just read a review about UX50

UX50 can only work 2 and half hours with Max. backlight (4.20V~3.70V )

2:24 hrs with half backlight and bluetooth; bluetooth stops working at 2:00hrs (4.20V~3.70V )

FYI, according to Palm Infocenter (http://www.palminfocenter.com/palm/p_story.asp?ID=5666):

Sony rates the battery life at 14 days with 30 minutes of typical use per day. There will be a extended battery clip on accessory that will increase the battery life.

The fact that they have an accessory to extend battery life may help support Unregistered's statements. Then again, maybe it's just a nice accessory so people don't have to charge as often.

And more (http://www.pdainfocenter.com/palm/p_story.asp?ID=5680):
There is an extended battery clip on accessory, the PEGA-ED40 that will increase battery life up to 3 times the standard capacity. It costs $120 and attaches to the bottom of the handheld.

And according to Walt Mossberg (http://ptech.wsj.com/ptech.html):
Battery life varies widely, depending on your task. If you use just the Palm organizer functions, such as the address book and calendar, you should be able to go for days between charges. If you play audio constantly, even with the screen off, battery life drops to about 16 hours. Using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet cuts battery life to just 4.5 hours.

Wifi should kill it about twice as fast as BT, based on my experience with a prism2-based Wifi card (SMC) and Socket BT card in my Zaurus. So battery life seems comparable to the Zaurus.

Now for reality. It's not that I'd necessarily *want* to stare at a 3" screen for two hours straight, but if I had to and it was the only way out of a jam, it'd be nice to have a portable power solution that didn't cost $100+ extra (or require an AC outlet).

the first test is:
full backlight, full power. drained @ 2:30

the second test is:
full backlight, full power, w/ bluetooth. drained @ 2:24

so you got 6 mins less when you got bluetooth on...

IMHO though, we all know that the UX's battery is relatively small in capacity, and it get extended battery life effectively by dynamically adjusting the clock frequency....

the test used in the site basically is running the machine at max demand....but it is hardly accurate in the sense that...for how many % of the time you will be using max. clock frequency...? especially when you got a seperate DSP for movies and audio....

i don't care what trick they use to cut the power consumption....i only care about the out come for daily use.....

make sense!

btw, it's 50% backlight with bluetooth

negative, i read full backlight with bluetooth on for 2:24 for the second case on the original site. i am a native chinese.

and i misread 2:24 as 2:42 in my last post...so with bluetooth on the batterty lasts only 6 mins less..! not bad...!

Thanks for the pics!

Very nice to be able to look at all these side by side.

I also read somewhere that mp3z could be played over 16 hours nad around 35 or with the extended batter what is imho great !
and with wifi 4,5 hours is also very very good , did you know that ipaq 5550 only last 2,5 hours on wifi ?

I was playing MP3s with backlight at 100% and painting and it drained the battery in 4.5 minutes.

the handheld engine needs field testing not bot testing.

P.S. the 4.5 minute thing was a joke

We all know that the screen of ALL color devices is the major battery consumer! I never run my screen at 100%, more like 25% and it is extremely usable at that level. If I want to conserve battery life I turn the backlight off and use a overhead (I do this on airplanes almost exclusively). I wish Sony would also offer a UX battery sled that you could put 4-6 AA's in. This would help the Road Warriors immensely! :D

nah seriously, the screen is more than bright enough, I have been using it at 50% in bright or sunlit areas and 25% or less in darker areas..

the battery is good too I have been getting more than 6 hours tinker time with random testing of multiple apps and features, handheld engine is good
