View Full Version : Un-resetable NX-70

My 9 month old NX-70 has completely stopped working, and I was hoping someone might have insight to the problem before it gets shipped back to Sony.
It had been working fine, then I took some pics with the camera and shut it off (while still in the Clie camera application). Later on, a scheduled Datebook5 alarm went off, which I just ignored. The next day, I inserted the WiFi card and then turned the device on...the alarm notification screen was up, but the touch screen was dead. A soft reset brought up the preferences screen, but still the touch screen didn't work. So, I tried a hard reset; the usual splash screen sequence (dots...Sony...Clie) came through at about quadruple-speed, and the unit randomly bounced through the Digitizer sequence, with the touch-screen still non-functional. The time/battery/charging icons all work fine. Many useless hard-resets later, Sony tells me it must be a hardware problem, but I'm skeptical. Can a virus/worm get into the unit and fry the memory?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Unless you were trying to run an overclock program, there is no program out there which could cause (intentionally or otherwise) your Clie to crash. Did you leave it in a really hot or cold place? That might have also caused your problem. Another thing is the clamshell hinge got slightly loose and caused the digitizer to stop working.
Frankly, I don't think any of the above happened to you and you should just ship it back to Sony (or wherever you still have a warranty thru) to get a functional unit.

I would seriously doubt it would be a virus/worm. Even if it was, a hard reset would have removed it. Does the digitizer work at all? Can you tap on anything? Most likely it's best to send it to Sony while it's under warranty. They should send you a box to ship it in and their turn around is pretty good. Most seem to have their Clie back within a week.

Testing my new signature...
Thanks for the input.
I am sending it back to Sony, but I was just curious if there were some unifying explanation for the sudden break. Sony Support's problem-solving--in my experience with 2 Vaio's and an NR-70--is less than ideal. Hopefully they will just replace the unit.
The digitizer doesn't respond at all, but what's particularly strange is that the hard reset sequence is clearly abnormal.

Are you using a screen protector?
We have come a long way, some seem to find it incredulous that some things can break or fail. I am not making fun, just an observation from many who have become accustomed to reliability.

Remember that you didn't ever operate the unit outside manufacturer's recommendations required for warranty, no extreme temps, moisture, overclocking,or flash rom tools.
I do have a screen protector, but I don't think it's a problem with the screen. After leaving the unit off overnight, I could get past the digitizer screen (but really slowly...meaning ~15 seconds lag after each touch of the screen), but then it froze again at the Launcher.
And the Clie (truthfully) has not been exposed to temperature extremes, overclocking, etc. The only thing I'm guilty of is using it a lot. It's not that I expect 100% reliability; it's just that usually I can find some sequence of events (such as dropping the device) or some indicators of an impending problem (such as a fading screen or a change in the feel of the clamshell) before this sort of failure occurs.
