View Full Version : there is a need of a better audioplayer, at least for me!!!
i am still waiting - i dont like the native nx audioplayer a lot cause it is strange to handle.
am i the only one?
i would prefer a winamp-like player. i miss to choose folders and different playlists. also the id3-tag support should be implemented in the list mode view. why nobody is developing something like this???
Well, of course winamp is better, but for a clie and a personal MP3 player, personally I'm quite happy with it...

color me dissatisfied.
Support for multiple playlists is essentially non-existent, barring use of the album-switching app (which has its own problems, not relevant here).
It doesn't remember its state after a media switch - I like random play, and it will always default to program play / repeat off.
Those two issues make it a pain for me - doubly so, since no good replacement exists. Realplayer was nice on a TT - shame it won't work on a clie.

Both AeroPlayer and PocketTunes beat the hell out of Sony's proprietary audioplayer. Personally, I find the lack of an equalizer most dissatifying. How can you claim to be a multimedia device or a Personal Entertainment Organizer if you deliver crappy proprietary software?
Not to mention the memorystick media.

could've sworn that I'd tried AeroPlayer w/o success.
Part of my problem is a strong tendency towards freeware & personal cheapness - I generally dislike shareware / payware. Works out well, sometimes - this cheapness led me to plucker, quite possibly the finest ebook reader / offline browser in existence.
Guess I should re-check aeroplayer, and look into pockettunes, and open my wallet...

I was under the impression that Aeroplayer and Pockettunes did NOT work on the Clies...Can anyone confirm?

from aeroplayer's FAQ:
Q: My Sony Clie runs Palm OS 4.x, but it plays MP3s. Why won't it run AeroPlayer?
A: Clies use a DSP (a type of additional processor) to decode MP3 files. AeroPlayer uses only standard Palm OS hardware in order to ensure compatibility with future Palm-Powered devices, so all decoding is performed using the main CPU.
(note the os4.x, but I think this would still apply - clie's don't use the standard palm audio, iirc)
from pockettunes' site:
Note that Sony handhelds are not supported at this time due to Sony's decision not to support the standard audio API. They have not released sufficient information to play audio on their devices.)
So, that'd seem to be a no for both... argh. realplayer (free!) also currently has no clie port. bleagh.

this is why sony sucks........i say we take all their gear and put new innards in them and become cool!!!!!!!!!!

Sony sucks?
I respectfully disagree. By using a DSP, Sony is generating MP3 music through hardware, with less overhead on the processor and memory. This is why you can play music in the background without multitasking. It is also why Sony uses less battery power to play MP3s and generally has better sound quality.
I'll stick with my built-in MP3 player on my T665C. Thanks.

I agree, the player is quite basic. But I really don't use the NX80's audio player much. First I only have a 128ms so even if I use half of it for tunes, that's maybe 1 or 2 cd's with max compression. That means I would ahve to trade music out every other day.
2nd - I have a 3gig iPod and, well, there is just no comparison. What I really want is an NX80 with better storage. Like 5gigs. But that would cost a fortune in CF or MS (when ever they have a 5gig ms).

If you have ever heard the poor quality sound on a Palm you will be thankful for the Sony and its MP3 ability. I agree that they should release the APIs so third party software can be made, but at least they didn't go the cheap route like Palm and make it difficult to hear music through the headphones.

It's fine for me, if I want something better, I'll dig out my minidisc player.

First off, Archangel, good points!
Sony added additional hardware which both allows users to switch to other programs while listening to MP3's (which I believe the Palm is unable to do) and secondly, provides a GREAT sounding MP3 player.
Now... check out this site:
http://ajvmp3.paradise.net.nz/
This person has created a very nice looking MP3 player which, although it's in beta, worked great on my T665!
Haven't tried it on my new NX80v, but I'd be surprised if it didn't work.
Now why can this guy make an MP3 player which works with the Sony Clie's, but the other companies can't???
Anyway, if someone's interested, try loading AJVMP3 on thier NX device, and let us know if it works.
(Just went back to their site, and read the following notes... sorry 'bout that)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q) Which model Sony cliés has it been tested on?
A) NR70, N760, and SJ20 with the Audio Adapter. It doesn't work on any of the Palm OS 5 devices due to a lack of help from Sony. Let us know if it works on your model.
Q) Does it work on the NX series clié?
A) Not yet, but we're working on it.

i feel like nx80 has decent mp3 sound .. compare with my minidisc nz90 ..
just to make sure:
my complain was not the sound quality. just the implemented player makes it quite hard to manage more then one album on your card. it shows only the name of the songs. the order is mainly mixed - you never know who is the artist of the next song.
btw - i do own a seperate mp3 player. but it makes no sense buying a multimedia pda and still using single devices for each application.
SONY suxx?
YES - they do not publish the sound api for third party developers.
NO - they design sexy devices.;)

i think you can change the order of the list but i agree that you can't have more than 1 program .. i'm not sure about this but it makes sense to me that you can just pick the song you like to listen then make order .. and listen till it done ..

I suppose the Clie player doesn't support skinning too? And will there be any update? I don't think so. One good thing about commerical softwarez is they always get updated and (most of them) listen to what their users what.
But anyway I find he built in audio player "ok" nothing fancy I guess I can live with it....

I've been wanting a better AudioPlayer too. I recently found out about MMPlayer. http://mmplayer.com/
Their version 0.1.7 says that it has Sony Clie Audio Support!! They started having "Partial Sony Support" with version 0.1.6b. Maybe this is the start we need.
Has anyone tried it out on an NX80?

Dang-it!
I just downloaded MMPlayer 0.1.7. BEFORE I installed the PRC I read the ReadMe. It states:
"News in 0.1.7:
==============
Clie support with sound. The sound support is limited to 8kHz mono since this is the only API Sony has made public. You also need to encode the audio to this sampling frequency because we haven't implemented resampling yet. Many thanks to Jean-Baptiste Poljak for making this possible."
I didn't even install it.

you are right, but also they wrote they want to implement an own decoder and this could be the possibility to play mp3 on the clie nx.

the worst thing for me from the built in player is that
i have to put all the songs directly under MSAUDIO folder.
It makes it hard to categorize/locate the songs
Is there any get around for this ?

Aww yeah. (Wish I had NetMD.. Those pretty minidiscs... I have an awesome collection from when I've traveled)
Since the audio player only plays 44kHz, I don't use it as my primary mp3 unit. You could hope that newer clies come out with something better then grab a copy of that program from a nice cliesource user.

If you want to have multiple albums on your MS and swap between them, just use Clie Pet's Album Swap Utility.
You just put seperate folders with your MP3s into PALM / PROGRAMS, and make sure they all start with 'ALBUM_'. (for example 'ALBUM_By The Way')Easy!
If you want it, just search for ALBUM SWAP on ClieSourse. Im sure its still free, great program!

Decuma works good, but it's not legal for the NX70
