I've converted a few full-length movies. In Long mode you can fit two hours on a 128MB stick. It takes hours to actually process it. It's the kind of thing you leave running overnight so you can watch it the next day. Battery consumption is a problem, though. The Clie won't outlast the movie, in most cases. The few times I've actually used this feature, I've kept the Clie alive with a car charger from Belkin.

So far I've been able to resist the temptation to view a movie on a 3-inch screen through a tiny speaker. Just isn't the "movie experience" I'm looking for.

I am a netflix customer and I love to watch movies on my NX70V.

I go the standard mode and get 60 minutes on a 128mb stick. Lucky for me I have a 256 MS select so I put half the movie on one side, half on the other.

I really think that the quality in long mode is not that good. Standard is a good quality/size point for me. But if I only had a 128mb stick I might think differently.

BTW, I can watch a whole 2 hour movie and still have battery left over to play a few games or take some notes. The one time my battery did die on me I just turned the backlight off and was able to watch the rest of the movie. Maybe that's an option for some of you with an empty battery in a well lit area.

Also, I wanted to note that I use the headphones. The sound from the internal speaker is HORRIBLE. With the headphones, it sounds pretty good. That might also contribute to my longer battery life.

I record various TV shows on my Media Center PC and occasionally convert some to watch on my CLIE NX80V.
I watched "Gary The Rat" last night when my power went out for the nth time this summer due to all the lightening storm we have been getting here lately in the North East USA.
:D
I convert them in Standard mode using Image Converter and can fit 1 hour of programming on a 128M MS or 4 hours on my 512M CF.
With the brightness turned all the way down I can get over 2 hours of battery life when watching movies.
I also use the headphones when watching the movies for great stereo sound.

my NX70 from a full charge would allow me to view a full length Matrix movie then just barely outlasted the movie leaving me with 13% battery remainning. Pretty good when I use it with a pair of good headphones. :D

Very good! If anyone asks about battery life, I can tell them one Matrix!!!

I've seen some PPC owners do this but not on a Palm-based machine yet. Nice to hear that it is possible.

But even for them, it was more a "I-can-do-this" type thing than a "I-need-this" application.

druss,

there's tons of threads on this topic.

The gist is, get DVDxCopy and TMPGEnC. I believe both are free. Do a search on google.

Use DVDxCopy on the dvd. it makes a 1 gig+ MPEG file on your hard drive. And the Image Converter that came with your Clie CD should make it useable on your clie. Whole process for me takes about 5 hours.

I use the TMPGEnC program to cut my movies so they fit on a 128MB disc.

BTW, I watch my netflix movies on my dvd player at home, I only put dvds that I already own on my clie. ;-)

I downloaded three different simpsons episodes to try and watch them on my clie nx70 but none of them would convert. I gave up and have not tried again. Too time consuming for no success!

No your not the only one. I use Kinoma quite frequently. I usually show clients my demo reel and commercials I've created when I meet with them. It beats lugging a laptop around. It's helped me win alot of work by impressing clients. It's the reason why I continue to prefer Sony over other products.

I converted a bunch of movies to NX format a while back and even wrote down how to do it:

Currently I some stuff on FTP if anyone is interested, including Simpsons and Matrix.

On the trip back from Virginia...I watched 2 episodes of the first season of CSI on my NX80. Both are, I think, 1 hour long each and were in high quality (standard?). They are about 90 megs each. When I was done watching the two episodes, I listened to some music...about 50 minutes worth. My battery was at 43% when I put it back in my backpack. The battery life is very good on the NX80...

Also...Anyone else have to rename their files to MOV00001.MQV or whatever to make them viewable in Movie Player? I bought greendragonsoftware's little hack thingy when I had my NX70...but it doesn't work with the NX80...

Make sure those are MPG or MOV files; those are the only video file types will work on Image Converter.

I don't find converting movies to be too time consuming of a process- so far, I've converted almost all of my Family Guy episodes and a few Twilight Zone episodes- I just leave Image Converter to do it's work in the background as I'm working on other stuff on my computer. One 30 minute episode usually comes out to 80 megs (high quality setting). It's great to be watching those shows in bed where you can always switch it off any time you want (no remote to worry about!), at lunch (beats reading a book), or when you're waiting in line somewhere (and listening to the oooo's and ahhhh's that you'll get from the people behind you).

But even for them, it was more a "I-can-do-this" type thing than a "I-need-this" application.
For me, it's 50% "I-can-do-this" type thing and a 50% "I-need-this" thing. Being able to play movies on my Clie is a novelty, but it's also an essential thing to have when I'm off bored somewhere without my television or computer.

Whilst it certainly doesn't replace going to the cinema, or at least watching on a decent widescreen TV, I've watched a few movies on my NX73 - I had Chasing Amy and Daredevil on a couple of 256Pro sticks. Combined with a battery charger to recharge the battery, I watched them over the course of a weekend away, including the flight there and back.

But in reality...it is probably just more of a novelty thing...nice to show off in meetings that I have films on "that funky little Sony gadget", as people call it.

Agree! Nice to show off, but in reality it`s quite a bit of work to rip and encode movies to be used on a Clie. I did it with a few movies just to see how it works, but my PC is too slow and I do not really have the opportunity to watch a movie during a flight or in the train. Also prefer to watch a movie using my home theater system.

I used to use my NX as a movie viewer, but found the built in apps to be too cumbersome. Kinoma was no good either. I found that the quality of "Low" was just too bad to watch. Now that I have a PPC, it takes less time to convert something (most divx things I had to convert to mpeg, then to sony's thing again, very time consuming, wehereas on the PPC it takes a step shorter, and works way better). For example, I can put a 30min episode of friends in 25mb-and this is with 320x240 resolution and 15-20 fps easily. Very fun to watch at work on my breaks :D

PPC is like Personal Pocket Computer or something like that.

It is not a program, it is not a Clie or even a Palm for that matter.

It is a PDA that runs on Microsoft's software. So if you wanna buy a new PDA, then have fun with your PPC.

correct anything if i'm wrong here guys.

Video on the Clie (or really ANY PDA) is nothing more than a novelty. I am a director and I keep my reel on a MS which is handy but I realized VERY fast that the CLIE (even though the playback is EXCELLENT) is not a machine to watch videos on. As noted, you can BARELY make it thru a single movie...if you are lucky. The killer for me was the expense. If you want a full length movie in high quality you have to get one of the more expensive MS.

If you are looking for a portable video solution try :

Achos Cinema to Go (http://www.archos.com/products/av300_series.html?sid=j22o2cyjbj2j42sbsk33yy)

Plays full length DIVX, built in screen, pics, MP3s, portable HD...etc. You can even hook it to a TV...

i put Ghost in the Shell on my 128 mb stick, and on long play it was only about 80 mb and the quality was ok, managed to make it through the movie (minimum back light) and still have almost an hour of mp3 time (and i'm using an nx70)

but it's mainly a 'i-can-do' thing for me.

Maybe -- but I saw that unit reviewed on TechTv -- Biggest complaint. BATTERY life. - even when playing Mp3s the big screen sucked the power FAST.

Face it - for some apps we may have the technology in every area EXCEPT battery power... It seems that the better battery is still over the next horizon

Cheers kp.

The way I look at it, movies on my CLIE are a convenience for when I travel, I don't expect Dolby 5.1/HDTV etc. When I used to fly a lot this device would have been ideal as generally I didn't fancy any of the inflight movies.

Using a CF card and the Eruware driver I have no problems using this, and the same machine then doubles as a PDA when I get off the plane.

We can all go out (?) and buy other devices, but it's convenient to have one that does a few things well.

I've yet to get a succesful conversion of a movie. Having movies on board my Clie to View would be Awsome to kill time on the train back and forth from work. Now if the video player would work off the CF card it would be the icing on the cake

what i do is cut out the unecessary
parts from the movie (or things i dont like)
and convert the rest of the movie.

This makes the file smaller.
I see what i want
and its really COOOL! to show it of that way.

I dont think i can sit for two hours watching a movie
on a small screen.

I have read all the replies and I am suprised to hear that alot of people dont use this option more! I use my clie daily at work for music and movies and i find time goes real fast! As far as limited battery life i start at 7am start a movies right then and about 8:30 9:00 i either change movies or put on mp3s for the rest of the day.I have never completley killed it but i get the batt warning everyday at exactly 2:30pm! Today i watched T3!!!! I have found that the software that people use is slow (tmpenc mostly) i can rip a movie from avi to mpg in about 3 hours and then ic (image converter) takes about 4-5. I am dedicating a 233mhz pc to this task and those are my times! Any faster processor should cut down your times dramatically! I like the fact that almost 7 movies fit on 1 cd once converted to mqv format!
To say that the movie player is a novelty is rediculous! and i cant see anyone sitting on the train with a 29 inch tv in their lap plus the ability to play mqvs off a memory stick! Anyways if anyone wants premade mqv format movies visit the clie channel on mirc!
start MIRC
type: /server irc.autobotnation.com
then after connecting type: /join #clie
With a little knowledge you can get going real fast I myself am on all the time unless im on a different server and that is very rare for i use another pc strictly for other other stuff like downloads and my wifi connection.
I do agree that the archos multimedia center is nice for stricktly movies but i like being able to surf the web, email and play games also. So what does everyone out there want too see? And does anybody agree with me on a 20gb hardrive based clie? I know id pay the loot in a second! thanks again everyone for posting and i hope someone with a stock clie somewhere will realize the potential of their beloved sony clie!!! And then abuse those options beyong the threshold of personal entertainment just like i do!!!

I may be wrong (so feel free to gently correct me on this!!) but doesn't Mini's patch allow you to use CF with movie player. I'm yet to try it, but from reading the blurb I take it that you can...link is below.

http://usagiya.g-com.ne.jp/mini/nx80vpatchEN.htm

JoeTHC - many thanks for sharing via MIRC...will log on over the weekend and borrow a few files, and maybe also try and return the favour and get a few of my movies converted over for playing on Clie.

Limewire..............sometimes I rip them from DVD's I own, then convert them through Image Converter and put them on a CF card......... I have an NX 60 and it works like a charm!!!.........last night I downloaded Anaconda's (2 parts - AVI)....I'll join them tonight, convert it to MPEG, then convert again through Image Converter.........I'm leaving out of town early Saturday morning, and I'll have something to watch during the trip!!!!!......... I do the same thing on shows that I record on my computer (Nip/Tuck, etc.), and watch during my lunch hour!!!..........I'm sure there are other ways that might be quicker, but this is the easiest for me!

I've converted about 40 movies so far. I keep them on DVDs where I can fit about 20 per DVD. I convert DVDs and VHF movies that I already own. I use an ADSTech box that allows me to connect my DVD player to my desktop and rip the DVD. Then I run the movies through software supplied with the ADSTech box to trim off the unwanted stuff at the front and back of the movie. I also bump up the sound volume during this step as the Clie is a bit volume impared. Then I run them through the Sony Image Converter in standard mode with stereo sound and adjust the settings so the output will be less than 227 megabytes - the actual size of the 256M memory stick.

I keep movies on several CF cards because they are cheap. When I want to watch a movie I copy one from a CF to my 256M memory stick (takes a half hour to do the copy on the NX80) to watch the movie. Using earphones the sound is great.

This isn't my only use for the NX80. I use it for taking photos, playing mp3s, address book. date book, bible study, dictionary and lots more. But I love movies and this allows me to watch a movie almost anywhere. When traveling I find it easier to use the PDA than my laptop because sometimes the person in front of me on the airplane reclines their seat and that doesn't leave enough room to open the laptop. Sometimes I travel with the PDA and leave the laptop at home. I watch a couple of movies a week.

I previously tried DVDx but it took way too long and I was never happy with the results. The ADSTech box also allows me to digitize my analog camcorder tape library so I can store it on DVD. I've also converted all VHS movies in our home to DVD using the ADSTech. The ADS cost about $100 but its been worth it in my opinion.

It's not really worth watching whole movies on the NX80, IMO. Maybe I just don't have the patience involved :) . Watching 1/2 hour TV episodes is much more suitable.

I have 2 256MB MS Pros, so i can fit 2 high quality southpark episodes onto a MS. Or I can fit the movies that i have downloaded onto the other MS using long mode. I'm trying to sell my 256MB MS to get a 1GB Pro, the prices have gone down alot lately, around $125. If i get a 1GB, then i can REALLY cause some serious damage ;)

I would actually prefer to see small "movies" like simpsons and the stuff, rather than one large movie.

But I agree that although nice, using a PDA for movies is a bit too much... Would like to see a TV tuner though? BTW what happened to that tuner shown in CEbit?

my clie plays the movies and music videos cool!

I convert movies via Kinoma Producer, which will give me the optimal setting to run on my clie and the best is kinoma player reads from the CF card.
