It bloody kicks ***!
I don't know too much of japanese yet, but so far Im impressed with the machine.
a) Camera is better than I expected. I disliked the one on my NR70V. This one is better quality. In movie capture mode, the animation is quite smooth both in preview mode and in playback mode.
b) Interface overall is very nice and responsive.
c) The keyboard is very good at entering stuff. A lot better than the NR70V. Havent got used to japanese input yet, I tried to enter english with the graffiti2, but was somehow missing something since it was always entering kana, even though I clicked english mode in the corner.
d) MP3 playback, tested a few mp3s and the volume is quite high on the default setting, it is also quality clear sound.
e) Some CLIE DEMO, was quite slow. Dont know if that is how the demo is supposed to be, or its because its a Flash application. I skipped after a few seconds.
This is my first Palm 5, so Im going to start downloading some apps to test this baby out.
More updates later

Rob,
I don't think the unregister is making the story up....at least not on his post. Nipster also encourage him to register so that we can share his expirience with his new UX.....

First, congrats to Unregistered. Keep us posted on your experiences with the UX50. I also went to an electronic shop like Bic Camera as the UX50 bas been launched in Japan today, but didn`t buy the UX50. My first impressions are slightly different. FYI, I am currently using a NX60.
The first impression was that it is nice PDA, but not a real big step and probably not a reason to upgrade for me.
I personally think that the size of the display is a joke. It actually looks quite strange as the keyboard part is much bigger than the actual display as the upper part has a rather wide border around the display.
Moreover, the quality of the display is O.K., but I had the impression that the display of the NX73/80 is brighter and the colours are better.
The landscape format is a question of personal taste/preferences, but I did not find it very useful. Being used to the format of my NX60, I did not like the position of the jog dial. It seemed to me rather unergonomic. Having the grafitti area on the right side of the screen is also strange.
The keyboard of the UX50 looks pretty good and I assume that keyboard users will love it. I personally do not use the keyboard of my NX60 very often and I am probably not the right person to comment on this, but I think SONY was listening to the customers who requested a better keyboard.
The 3D launcher of the UX50 looks nice, but is definitely not an improvement, just cosmetics. I am curious how launchers will work in landscape format.
I could not test the performance of the UX50 as they displayed it `naked`, meaning no movies, games etc. installed.
The cover of the mini USB port did not look very sturdy. I wonder if it is durable and doesn`t break or is lost during daily use.
I was playing with the UX50 for about 15 minutes and thought that I have seen enough. For me, it is just another new Clie which does not give me the `Wow` effect. When I saw the NZ90 for the first time, I thought `why did they develop such a PDA. It`s not that bad this time, the UX50 simply does not meet my expectations and is not the PDA that I am dreaming of.
I think that the Sharp Zaurus is a better landscape format PDA, but is lacking popularity probably due to the OS used.
Please do not get me wrong. I do not want to criticize the purchase of Unregistered. It`s just first impression of the UX50. I could be wrong. Interested to hear more from Unregistered about his new toy.

again...really depends on what you need....
i like the NX form factor more over the UX....(TX would even be better if there is one).......but the NX series connectivity is really hopeless...I can't believe that the only built-in wireless protocol in a a CLIE released in 2003 is IrDA...!
Right now, if I am buying one new CLIE, my preference would obviously be the UX becoz of all the built-in Wireless capability. I think I can bear with that strange graffiti area position and landscape view...
I will love to see a non-clamshell (NX form factor is OK too) with built-in BT and WLAN though...

WIFI, BT, backlit usable keyboard, and OS 5.2 are good for my daily usage and hence i am waiting for UX-50...
Did the launching for Asia set for early Sept ??

This is making a choice between a NX80 and UX50 SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO difficult...

@Sindu: It was launched today!
@omnitron: For Europeans like me; we'll never get the NX80, so... :-)

Only in Japan, not any where else in Asia.

You guys obviously haven't run the UX simulator that was released recently. One of the items in the Prefs applet allows you to switch the Graffiti area to the left.
I'd recommend that anyone interested in buying a UX run the simulator with their favorite apps to make sure that they work properly.
