View Full Version : A T with VG is certain now and why it won't matter when sony doesnt come out with it.

Just to establish my bona fides, because my post count certainly doesn't. I've been reading this board since before a certain TB got in trouble with his girlfriend for not telling her about all of you. :D I just don't get a chance to post a lot.
It's almost certain now that Sony will produce a small T style pda with a 320 by 480 screen. There are two things that make me certain of this, the UX and the T3.
When they anounced the UX just about everyone said wow buts what with the small screen and funky processor, (ok and the weird ram as well but the rams not important right now). If you think about that screen and processor would allow Sony to make a T series with VG in either a very small package, or allow for one large battery.
It makes perfect sense from a power perspective. The smaller sonys with the 320 by 320 screens are not exactly known for their bettery life (mainly talking the T series and color SJs, excpeting the SJ33 of course.) But with a small screen and low power processor there should be no problem shoe horning in a decent battery and another feature like wireless or a camera.
That by itself would not be enough for Sony to actually give us what we want, but with the T3 around the corner Sony is actually in danger of being knocked off the top of the "Innovation Pole". If the T3 comes in at $400 bucks even Joe Schmoe at BB is going to take one look at the TG50 and go get the T3.
So that's it right? They come out with a VG T sometime in the next couple of months, right?
Wrong. This is Sony we are talking about.:D They wouldn't give us what we wanted if we screamed for it, which we are. However after some more thought on the subject it may not matter for those of us who want a Sony pda with VG the same size as a T series. While playing with my friends NR I noticed it was the same width and thickness in tablet mode as my T615C. Of course the NR ws a good bit taller. (Note: The T615C is still the smallest color palm by volume and only the HP 19xx is smaller.)
Now what if sony uses the new UX screen and processor and creates a clamshell PDA the size of the T615C?
As long as it had the ALL the BUTTONs, scroll included on the flip side I would but that in a heart beat and I think most of you would as well.
Let me know what you think;)

Pretty good reasoning. But I may want a bigger screen than the UX. And I don't think the NR with the older OS would satisfy me, and the NR's successors are thicker. But pretty good reasoning, nonetheless. Hope SONY is similarly reasonable.

I was only using the NR for comparison. I assume that any potential T replacement will be OS 5 or above. I also think that except for the CF slot the NX would have been the same size as the NR. I could be wrong however.

Cookies, mm... but yes, I certainly hope sony, and all others go along with the bigger screens and the VG... I for one will never buy another PDA that's got a screen small than my NX...
i dont clear my cookies
but CS logs me out like once every month or so?

If there was such a PDA... I wouldn't buy it... I'm too used to the camera, the CF Memory, The wireless card... and everything my NX has. Of course, if we are talking about an NX with all this, and as small as my old T665... I would consider it!

I'm more interested in satisfying my own needs, than in supporting Palm, or any other company... whatever country it's from. I just pick the best. For me, Sony CLIE is the best so far... if palm improves enough... maybe then I'll go palm.

I don't think the NX is the same size as the NR or the same width and thickness as the T-615. The NR replacements have been changing slightly in size, but I don't have the details in front of me.

There are a group of T615 and T665 users that are waiting for its replacement with a larger screen, faster processor and more ram. So far Sony has ignored us. If Palm does release a T3 around October 1st I think it will be all over for this group. They will abandond Sony and move back to Palm. Lets face it most PDA people have by now developed specific uses for their PDA and want or dont want specific items connected with that PDA. The information so far out on the T3 will do me just fine unless Sony gets it head out of the sand, which I doubt.

I'm sure Sony has seen the T3 writing on the wall and will quickly release a Hi-Res + VG OS5 T-Series model to compete directly with it. I would be very surprised if it wasn't released before Thanksgiving, possibly around or before the T3 release.
How about running the Handheld Engine, one with BT & Wifi and the other with just BT? It may be a little thicker (but not much) than the current T665 to hold a higher capacity Lithium Ion battery, and maybe even an external battery sled like the UX.
That would be a T3 killer.

I wish one of them is pretty soon kicking out our wanted baby. T3 is nice, but still has this gimmick-slider on it. No more gimmick stuff please, but really what we want.

Sony is a great company, they make nice looking device but they are not listening.
And this forum will help everybody, not just us - the consumer.
-PALM to make a better product and really compete
-Sony to listen to American consumer.

BTW I drive a vehicle that people describe as being "the cookie monster"
I like the idea present, but a clamshell design won't fly by me. I own a NX60 and have probably opened it up to the thumbboard and keys about 5 times. And that was only when a hard key input was absolutely necessary.
I don't think either Palm or Sony will actually release a "Dream Hires+ PDA" because that would satisfy the consumer market thouroughly. The only reason anyone would have to upgrade from there is OS6. Or maybe neither have released it yet because they're waiting for OS6, and they want their quality product to include OS6 and sell for $1099.
My next handheld will most likely be a laptop, unless a "dream PDA" is released.

Hi, Phoenix. In what ways does the rather well rumored T3 fall short of your dream PDA? Don't like slider? Need integrated WiFi? It's not my dream PDA, but I do think its real and hope it will be a pretty good hires+ pda.

Hi Robrecht.
Me for my part don't like the slider.
(Well - I just bought a T|T because I couldn't wait any longer to replace my dying m105. Couldn't find any other decend HighRes with BT and NO clam-shell.)
But I really wait for a full real estate (NON-slider, NON-clam-shell) HighRes+ with good portrait and landscape support. And of course with integrated BT and eventually WiFi (not absolutely necessary, but nice to have).:)
The T |T gives me some more month to wait.:( ...actually prefer not to wait.:D

I can't say that I'm crazy about the slider, but it does make the unit pretty compact when closed. I also love the collapsible stylus. The stylus alone is almost reason enough to buy a TT.

And what has Sony released to compete with the Tungsten C? Nothing, nada, zippo!:(
I don't expect Sony to release anything to compete with the T3, either. But I've been wrong before and could be wrong here, too!

After having the TT2 for a week, I can say that it is really a great unit. My slider stays closed most of the time, as there is software out there to allow this. I love the size of the unit. And the stylus is pretty cool, too.

I agree that the Slider stuff is gimmicky at best. I much prefer the virtual graffiti designs.
Laptops are TOO much ... They are PCs, but screen tech is only now catching up to the point where almost everything that can be done on a desktop can be done on a laptop. But laptops are just plain too bulky. And too expensive. And too much a target of thieves.
I much prefer a PDA that only needs a keyboard on those few times I actually NEED to use it. I think that is what attracts me to the clamshell designs -a lot there but only as much as you need at any one time...

The size is actually not that extreemly small. The button area is pretty high. And it is quite long, when the slider is open. If they would make the button area smaller and add the VG area, the unit would not increase too much in length.
This would actually be the unit I wanted for a long time.
And regarding the stylus: I love it too.

Well, Technology should by now be far enough to give us even a VGA resolution (480x640) PDA.
Take about the form factor of the Palm 500, add BT, double SD (or SD and CF if possible with a thin design) and a VGA resolution with VG and good portrait / landscape support. Of course all with low power consumption and include a state of the art battery for long lasting use. Driven by Palm OS6.x.
Companies should be able to fullfil those specs by this fall (at least with HighRes+ and no later than by end 2003 early 2004 with VGA screen).
