Sniffer for Wireless LAN

Hi,

maybe its another try of someone in this forum to get answers / solutions of finding Hotspots with an application for our Baby, the NX70V. I read a lot about nice trys and settings, but here in Germany it seems to be different. Summed up: it doesn't work !

Is ist sooo hard to program something like NetStumpler for OS 5? Maybe we can use this message to exchange each other. Here in Hamburg we have a cool project called HOTSPOT HAMBURG. There are about 35 open Spots with 250 MB traffic per month FREE for everyone! My company is one of these Spots. But what about all the rest of unknown Access Points, which are also for free but aren't visible?

Lets try to find a way to make more of our 150$ Wireless LAN Card & NX70 :-) And don't misunderstand, this is no call for "war-driving" or any other criminal enterprises !!!

Go down to "Applikationen", there you will find a link to a Handera / Yahoo Forum with a download of LANStatus (otherwise mail me at mrmacmax@mac.com, I will send it to you). It is working on OS 5 on my NX70 without any problems, so don't be afraid because it is a beta :-)

Well, my problem right now is to understand all the informations I can get from LAN Status like IP, Subnet, 1. & 2. DNS, Gateway etc. and be able to apply them to for example NetFront and its settings.

I was sitting in a hotel this morning, LAN Status could find this hotspot and showed lots of informations, but I couldn't use them because of beeing too stupid :-) If somebody can help me or can post screenshots or a guide, would be great.

ClieMax - which files did you install for LanStatus? The .zip file contains 3 files, but some seem to be drivers. Can you just install lanstatus.prc and get this info? If so, maybe I'll try it and let you know what results I get

For those curious...

The Sony WiFi card for use in the NX70 and the Symbol WiFi card,
popular with HandEra 330 users, are exact in every respect except the labeling in side by side comparison. It seems the Sony card is actually from Intel. The card is labeled as an Intel Pro card, and is autodetected in the HandEra 330 as such.
As would be expected from the AutoDetection, the Sony/Intel card functions fine in the 330, and behaves well with the LAN Status app.
However, also as expected, the Symbol card does not function in the NX70.
The HandEra LAN Status app which functions fine with the Sony card in the 330, launches fine on the NX70 with the Sony card. However while it triggers a network connection with the Sony card, it fails to make a connection with the card. You can tell the app to go into discover mode, however the connection attempt fails after retrying. The app can be closed gracefully.

It worked fine for me on my NX. I just added all three apps and it worked well. Unfortunately it still does not do what I want it to do and let me choose which lan I want.... I will look at hand era sources as I now have one app that accesses the WL100 card on the NX that was originally for the handera.

Well, I just tried this app. I only installed the LANStatus.prc file from the .zip archive, and the app was able to initiate a connection. It accurately reported the IP, DNS, and Gateway information for my home WLAN.
The main screen lists Rquest IP & Actual IP (I use fixed, but assume this would apply in DHCP situations) subnet mask, primary & secondary DNS, and gateway. Also lists an entry for broadcast (I'm not sure what this is, but I'm sure others will know).
There is a Prefs button that takes you to network prefs, and an IF button which reports on the card.
The drivers is listed as CFWL 100 Neti ver (and no version listed)
Manufacturer and Product are listed as unavailable.
CIS ID is all zeros (not sure what this is)
It correctly lists the card's MAC address, etc.
Not sure how this will do for discovery, but I'll try at a Starbucks later

captainao, I tried that, too. But I think it is just reporting the settings of your Clie... I don't think it is actually establishing a connection (which would be really cool...).

Does anybody know if Sony has a SDK for the wireless network card? Basically one would just have to read what comes in through the interface and dump it on the screen...

It establishes a connection on my home LAN. I can surf, and email. :)

From the website.... Here is what the app is suppose to provide.

The Lan Status app is a separate app that can optionally be run in Discover mode when no open WiFi network is present, or give you details of one you're connected to. It in fact does have a page in the app which lists all visible AP's, their signal strength and whether WEP is enabled on them. It also gives signal strength, transmit rate, Channel, ESS ID, AP BSSID, MAC address, TX/RX errors, as well as listing specs of the card itself including the Firmware version. Finally it lists the IP addresses handed to you via DHCP for: Requested IP, Actual IP, Subnet Mask, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, Gateway, and Broadcast.

Hm, thanks for the clarification... sounds promising enough. But after starting the LANstatus app it connects and shows me a window with IP adresses...

I just figured that it offers me to go into discovery mode, but then connects right away. That's why I couldn't see the discovery mode yet.

Looks like I need to play around with it more, thanks for your inputs.

For those who have installed: did you install the other 2 files as well (CFLanPrefs, and s24drv)? Do they add anything to basic prefs screens? I've got the main app installed, but don't want to start doing the hard-reset dance if there's a problem with these files.
I just tried to test "discover" too. My AP is both WEP and MAC address-protected, so I switched my network applet to my ANY profile. After a few seconds of trying to connect, the LanStatus app offered me the opportunity to go into Discover mode, and tried to reconnect again - while it didn't hang, I got bored of watching it trying to reconnect and there was no other info. I'll have to try this somewhere else I guess

I am still having trouble with the discovery mode. When I start it up it trys to connect to the best signal. If I cancel it, then it asks me if I want to go into discovery mode. If I say yes then it just connects again without giving me a choice. Would this indicate that there is really ony one sufficient signal.... It seems unlikely as my desktop can pick up numerous signals from the same location. .....

Do you need all 3 files installed to get into discovery mode ?

When I hit "yes" to go to discovery mode, it connects immediately if the profile is right. If the profile is wrong, it keeps retrying and won't connect.

Also, when I am connected, it shows a wrong MAC address... :(

I know it's been a few months since you posted this but, I just got the NX and I'm finding that most of the links out there are all but dead. So with that said if you still have it could you please send me a copy.
