Welp, I have had mine for almost a month now, without any noticeable scratches. But today I noted it's really beginning to scratch on the lower-right corner of the screen when in table mode and got scared. I haven't done so, I rather think it's just the way the hinge works when you turn the screen. So, I wonder how much scratch is yours ? I will try to attach a picture so I can tell you exactly where mine is scratched.

Actually, my problem is that the little knobs on the on-off switch have rubbed off or broken off. In other words, my slider switch is now perfectly smooth. It's now hard to turn the NZ on. I've only had this PDA for three months now.

I'm thinking of super-gluing sandpaper to the switch. Has anyone else had this problem?

Actually, I have the same problem. I think the slider switch for "power" is just poorly designed. A recessed push-button would have been better.

I have to use my finger nail to slide the switch...

I haven't had the problems you guys are refering to, but then again, I have only have my unit for almost a month now. What I dont like is my PDA getting scratched.. that's a reason for me to exchange it for a new one..

I agree about the power button issue. Poor design on Sony's part. Thinking about a little modification with the dremel tool & super glue!! The issue of scratches/wear is all in how much you use your "tool" aka "Clie". Like the tools I use in my construction/service business, they take on a bit of charactor as they are used over the months and years. After a while they may loose their value to someone else, but you wouldn't give it up for anything. Unless of course, a better model come out! :D

My once shiny chrome power and hold buttons are now smooth and dark black. I don't mind too much really because they still look good and not like they are scratched or worn at first glance.

There is also a few places on the back, and the section between those two buttons where the painting on the case has worn off.
This is annoying because it's obvious that my machine is scratched.

I would hope for more fit and finish on an $800 Clie, but since I've never used a case and its in and out of my pocket mostly I can understand. :D

you could always reprogram one of the hard keys to power on (but then you lose the prior of that key), or the original hard key itself (but then you have to open the nz).
i think you can also use certain apps to enable a long press on the back button to power on and off.

paint coming off the back, flat area beneath keypad has an edge lifting, silver coming off power and hold button, paint worn off edges of case.... pretty crappy paint job and buttons...

Sorry to read all of this, but I am now feeling better, knowing that this is a common thing... I virtually stopped using the NZ (believe it or not) the moment I noticed the silver colouring start to disappear from one of the knobs on the power switch... If I could only find a way to do away with the silver COMPLETELY from both the power and the hold buttons, and make them look like the much more sensible "unpainted" back button on the other side of the machine...

Can't believe that a company like Sony could not have thought of this and anticipated the problem... The slide switches could have been left black... Why paint them? Or even better, not making them out of cheap plastic? Aluminium perhaps? (dream on...)

Well, if someone finds a way to do the silver coluring vanishing trick without the use of solvents or something that would obliterate the buttons completely, I would appreciate it... Thought of wearing my fingers out rubbing the buttons... Too lazy though... ;)

Fidodido,

I think that the "scratch" you refer to in the lower right corner of the screen frame is not actually a scratch... Guess what... the paint job is even lousier than I thought. Notice how you have a silver section on the black plastic near the hinge pivot in the lower center section of the screen frame? (You can see the silver section in the picture you posted).

Well, if you open your clie, and turn the screen as if you were changing to tablet mode, but only do so half-way, and you were to look at the underside of the screen frame, you would notice some marks of what seems to be silver spray paint at the edges, near to where your "scratch" is located...

By what I can see in your pix, your "scratch" is silver, isn't it? My guess is that it is just a case of some careless spray painting...

Check it out.

Hope this gives back some peace of mind...

-Cheers

:(
I was really unlucky one day I was travelling to sweden.. Stopped for gas, walked out of the car, dropped the clie onto the asphalt, and as I walked forth to pick it up I managed to kick it along the asphalt..

My precious :/

Few scratches here - my old NR70, however, was quite scratched up after a year. Perhaps I coddle my NZ90 too much?

Having a good case helps. I use a Targus case - a steal at $10 - which has the soft fabric and the velcro belt-loop. I'm sure it's helped guard the NZ's finish.

The power switch and the hold slider are the only scratches I show. I hate seeing them, but I still have ridges on them. I have thought of repainting them but have decided to just suffer the flaw.

The scratch on the corner, like you mention, isn't exactly a scratch. I have had the same thing happen to mine. I notice that this happens when I try to swivel the screen without opening it all the way. It scrapes against the button panel (leaving a circular scrape of paint on the panel). Now that I've done that a bunch of times, I don't worry too much about it anymore.

Finally figured it out!

Well, come to think of it, it was rather obvious... The effect is marvelous though...

I was wondering how to get rid of the silver on my power and hold buttons, without the use of solvents or anything that might harm the switches. It all started when I noticed a portion of one of the tiny dots on the power switch becoming black... I simply hated it, and as stated before, stopped using the NZ.

Well, today I had the idea of very delicately rubbing a pencil eraser on the surface of the said tiny dots (only on the surface of the dots, and not the complete switches), on both the "power" and "hold" switches. Now, my NZ looks even better than it did as new, because I have silver switches with perfect black dots on them. Its really worth it.

I even considering repainting the switches as someone else also did, but then I thought that the paint could damage the plastic. Its a shame that I cannot take a picture of my "new looking" switches, because my only digicam is my NZ. I fell in love with it all over again...

Why didn't I thing of this before???

Well, better late than never!

-Cheers
