Does anybody know how to turn off the green LED on the sj33? I just got it today and the led is blinding to me.

Thx

Yes, it is pretty bright. There's no way I know of to turn it off when the SJ33 is on. Perhaps you could make a filter for it from colored transparency films.
For example, I have a bedside digital alarm clock that has green/blue LED numbers and no brightness control, I used the red lenses from some 3D glasses to make an effective filter.

The best idea I've heard for this is to use 4 layers of scotch #811 tape, cut small enough to fit inside the toggle buttons. (Thanks "Elf")  In fact if your new to the SJ-33, you might want to check out his website:

http://www.ee.ryerson.ca/~elf/sj33/

It's kind of a running diary of what he learned that worked (and what didn't).

Thank you everybody (even the thumb guy who I think might of been insulting my intelligence)

I ended up cutting 3 small squares of scotch tape, put them over the led, then colored over the led with a fine point black sharpie. The led can still be seen but is greatly diffused!

elf's site is a great site!

I just tried this:
Took a Post-It Note and used a hole puncher to punch a hole where the sticky backing is, carefully removed it from the punch and placed it over the LED, just about fits perfectly within the Page Up/Down buttons and is adhesive, the LED is still visible, but definitely diffused.
Now to get some different colored Post-Its and see which look best.

Sid,

Do you mean the standard paper ones or the bookmark type that are like colored scotch tape?

Well, for my experiment I used the standard paper ones, but I like your idea.

Those are all great hardware solutions, but isn't there a hack or something that can modify the LED's behavior?

I have to admit though, those mods on the website look very nice.

I think that post-it idea is the best yet. No sticker Schmutz!

You're welcome Aces! I hope others also find my SJ33 blog helpful. I've also gotten many personal emails thanking me. That quote I have at the top is from an email I received from a journalist who writes about technology for Wired, among other publications.

Now, I wonder if Sony will let me test their new devices for usability! :D

I will try the PostIt idea and let you guys know of the verdict.

Thanks!

Come to think of it, if one had a good printer and a steady hand, one could print a custom logo or something and punch it out.
(If you could get it to feed a post-it through, like on another piece of paper or something. I'll try it at work.

Hmm, one could laminate it too.

Good thing my boss is on a biz trip next week, I have to do some experimenting!! :D

Liquid Paper !!!

A drop of liquid paper carefully covering the LED results in a hardly noticeable filter that still lets you see the LED but doesn´t blind you anymore.

How could Sony miss this. 5 seconds after turning on my Clie I was complaining about the LED, doesn´t it seem strange?

That's another interesting idea!

Strange, yes. But in the big picture, I'll take this flaw over some of the others I've experienced on other handhelds.

I'd like to renew the call for a hack to fix this and/or give us some cool LED options if possible.

Thanks for quick answering.

1) Type of my Clie PEG SJ-33 (not PEG-SJ20)
2) I'm sure that is it configurable item! Because when i turn on "Message
LED" in Preferences->General it's turn off for a second, then blinks red for
a couple of time and only after that goes steady (and very bright) green.

Thanks in advance

Here's a good one:

I ended up using a small, round, translucent sticker from a set that came with a Hot Wheels car!

Mutes out that harsh LED just fine.
