View Full Version : which Clie to get for mp3, CF, colour, graffiti ?

Hi,
I'm from Israel, but currently visiting the US (San Diego at the moment).
I'm thinking of buying a new pda, I have an *old* visor deluxe and think it's about time to upgrade. The Clie's have caught my eye, they're so beautiful :).
Anyways, what I want in it is colour, mp3, graffiti (keyboard optional) and CF compatability so I can pop in cards from my canon camera. I've heard that the ones with the LAN slot can use a driver from eruware.com to read CF cards. I don't need a camera in the Clie'. I am not really limited by money, this is a present from someone and they said to get what I want :).
I tried Sony's search engine and it popped up with the NX60 for me. I haven't actually seen it in the store yet (will try compusa soon), but the specs look right. But - are there other Clie's that would fit what I want?
Thanks a lot,
Vered

Vared,
I would recommend any of these 3 Clie models:
NX80, NX80, or NX80.
Bright, clear screen, lots of memory, battery that seems to last forever, CF slot, applications built into ROM, beautiful new keyboard that not only feels good, but is nicely backlit too.... and an MP3 player that sounds absolutely, unbelievably amazing :)
Hope this helps,
Bawko

I agree with the Sony recommendation of the NX60. However, you might have a tough time finding one because it has been discontinued and supplanted by a newer model (NX73... i think) but if you look around, some stores might still have a few laying around.
Just my nickel's worth of free advice...

I am an NX60 owner and I am happy with it :)
If money isn't a problem to you u may want to take a look at the new NX Clies NX73/NX80.....
As mathwhiz99atucb said the NX60 is discontinued and replaced with the NX73

I'll recommend you get the NX80.
I bought the NX73 because I already have a 1.3 camera.
But if you can't find a good deal for the NX80; go for the NX70 or NX60, pretty good deals out there.
Go for the NX80V!
It's the best PDA I've used and if you can get a good price you won't regret it I'm sure.
mp3 - check!
CF - check!
colour - check!
grafitti - grafitti II if US version, grafitti I if Euro or Japanese - check!
;)
why not get the latest release so you won't have to hesitate about any regrets after getting a lower priced CLIE.
I'd recommend the NX73/80, either one will serve me just fine, although the NX80 has a CCD Camera & internal Flash (personally I can live without them) :p, so I wouldn't mind the NX73, because I just love the matt black color. :D

The main compelling reason to go for the NX80 is the additional RAM and heap memory :)

Thanks for the replies. I really don't need a camera in the Clie but I suppose I can live with having one :). Can I use the NX80 with CF cards type *I* ? They say type II... someone else said that you CAN use the type I cards, it just leaves a gap because the type II are thicker. I want to be able to view pics from my canon camera on the Clie.
Also... someone mentioned good deals - I'd appreciate any links to good priced deals... thanks :).

Do you mean I can choose which grafitti to use? because graffiti II won't work in Israel (that is, not in hebrew). This is really important because I use grafitti a lot (in hebrew).
Vered
Er not quite - what I mean is that if you buy it in the states it will come with Grafitti II installed. As far as I know you can't switch it to Grafitti I. However, if you snag a Euro NX80/73 then users are reporting it still has Grafitti I installed plus you get Bluetooth as well. Just letting you know the options out there. :)
As Grafitti only allows alpha numeric entry via the Roman system I don't really undersatand the Hebrew question. Do palms sold in Israel come with a different form of input? Or is it like a Japanese palm where you enter words in Roman script and then convert to Hebrew via other add in programs built in to interact with Grafitti?

you can use both type I & type II CompactFlash Cards on the NX80, both will work fine, so you can view your pictures from your Canon camera. :)

I cosign all the above and add in the fact that you don't have deal with installing additional updates(ms pro, CF & wi-fi) when the dreaded "hard reset" occurs(and it will) like you do with the other units. They're already there.
Paul
Alright alright, Paul, you've got me so tempted for the NX80. :p
I think it's time for an official upgrade to the NX80, just let me look around & do some research. :)
I've tried to watch an entire film last night on my NX70 & it just barely passed, completing the whole Matrix, but that's from a full charged battery, then ending with 14% when I finally finished the entire film. :p
Oh by the way, quite an impressive debate you have over at the other forum.... forgot the name..... "convince me to upgrade to NX80 from N760" was it???
:D you're putting on quite a show. I am totally impressed! ;)

And heck, I know many who keep all thier goodies for themselves (could use the nx70 as backup your NX80 until you sell it if you choose to) or pass them on to family. I'm normally somewhat frugal about my purchases, but I believe that "you got live sometime" and though I don't back Sony on everything (Yes, I took my Sony Vaio GPX 670 back to get a VPR matrix widescreen notebook :) ) I do believe they have improved on a device (already the favorite of many) and almost perfect.. for me.
I think it's time for an official upgrade to the NX80, just let me look around & do some research. :) I still wish it came in black though! The only things I don't like so far: (1) No probem with cf hinge yet, but I still wish it was fully retractable with cf installed (2) The stylus is a retractable toothpick. I use it in a pinch/ emergency, but the multi and (3) The position of the power button when in the cradle makes it difficult to turn it on. Though not really a problem for me I believe it's a design flaw either with the cradle(same as NX70) or the unit. I don't normally use it in the cradle very often, but never-the-less it's been mentioned before and I want to make sure you're aware of it since you're doing the research. (4) If you just look at the NX80 case it will it will scratch! I've never had a unit get scratched so easily. I might have to get a case just to hide the scratches and I very careful and (5) As previosly mentioned, I do wish it came in black :) . These units are nice, but the black to me would look classier!
I've tried to watch an entire film last night on my NX70 & it just barely passed, completing the whole Matrix, but that's from a full charged battery, then ending with 14% when I finally finished the entire film. :p You're still squeezing more out of yor NX70 than I did. :)
Oh by the way, quite an impressive debate you have over at the other forum.... forgot the name..... "convince me to upgrade to NX80 from N760" was it??? :) And now with addition of this: PEGA-CC5 Car Cradle with text-to-voice, GPS, RF Modulator target=_blank>http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/3094 (http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/3094) I'm even more satisfied with my choice as I have not used gps with the palm OS since my palm VX (days which I sold, gps cradle and all) :( . But now we realize the there much to the new NX's than we first realized! :) And I will get the GPS. It's on now!
:D you're putting on quite a show. I am totally impressed! ;) Thanks Eddy, I was just explaining the positives of owning the NX80 and then RoyoftheRovers explained that he came from the N760 to a NX70, quite a leap forward for anyone, but so much that one may not possess the proper frame of reference with which to form hypothesis. In others I sincerely believe that most who owned the NX70 and now the NX80 may be able to appreciate and notice the little changes & nuance as well as the big ones. Others even after to news about the new cradle may still think it's not worth upgrading from the NX70 to the NX80. Well, even now the changes are not so subtle.
Good Luck with search Eddy.

Since you satisfied this 2 condition.
1) Money NOT a problem
2) Need a CF Slot.
Go get NX80. That's the latest and newest. Don't even think of getting any model older than this, cause Sony come out new models way too fast.

Uh oh. That's not good... I'll go ask on some Israeli palm boards to see if it's just the grafitti that doesn't work or the keyboard too. Or - how would I be able to get a european NX80 ? Any american sites selling them ?
Grafitti I has a hebrew version. It's just software, not hardware, I bought my visor in the US and added the software in Israel.

Oh and another question - what do you mean by 'plus the bluetooth' ? Do the US NX80's not have that?

US NX80s don't have BT. :(
thanks Paul, bro.:) you shocked me with that huge post of yours & you've just about covered everthing I've heard about within one single thread.
I think you forgot about the digitizer being off-set? ;) (but this only happens on the defective units.) :D
So I'd better be careful & run a throughout test on the unit when I do make my purchase. :p
later bro. :D

Do the european ones have it built in? Aren't you supposed to be able to add a bluetooth CF card ?
Btw, I emailed Sony support and they say there's no way to get a NX80 with grafitti I - but of course, they're in the US, possibly in europe they'd have a different answer. The problem is, it's much more expensive in Europe/ Israel, which is why I want to buy it here.

Vered,
The European has Bluetooth built-in, but only in the NX73V. NX80 will not come to Europe:mad:
Btw, wasn't the use of Bluetooth restricted in Israel? Due to that the military is using the same frequency band?

Hi,
I don't know about bluetooth being restricted in Israel... it could very well be. When I get back to Israel I'll probably find out, seeing as I now have an interest in wireless communications - I just got my NX80 today. It's so beautiful! It's charging now, I can't wait to start fiddling around with it :).
Thanks for everyone's answers,

Vered,
Can you please tell me if/how can you use the hardware keyboard for Hebrew? (or do you use only "soft" keyboard or graffiti?
Thank you,

Amir,
Hebrew is a sore spot with the NX80. There are 2 hebrews out there for the OS5 - one by piloc and one new one by mobimate.
Piloc doesn't actually have one for the NX80 so I used the NX70 one. The hardware keyboard works more or less ok - I went to a place in Holon and they put stickers of the hebrew letters on for me. But the software keyboard is a mess - the letters appear in a different order than they are on a regular keyboard, making it very hard to find them.
So I more or less got along with the hardware keyboard but even that was a problem, especially switching to english, it sometimes wouldn't, and sometimes you would have to write the first letter in caps to be able to write in english, and even if it said 'en' instead of 'he' it would write in hebrew. In short, balagan.
I wrote to Piloc about a month ago (penreader.com i think) and told them about it, they said they don't have an NX80 therefore don't have hebrew for it but are expecting to get one in a couple of weeks and will develop hebrew for it. I checked their site the other day and they still don't have it but I think I'll write to them again and ask.
The mobimate hebrew is totally unusable. The hardware keyboard doesn't work at all with it, and the software keyboard is jumbled up as well. And at least for me, when the mobimate hebrew is enabled, if I click on anything in the datebook, it causes a soft reset.
*sigh*
Do you have an NX80, or just thinking of buying one?
