I have noticed that here of late a large amount of really stupid post's being made by "Unregistered" users. What is up with this? These folks must know that the question is stupid to start with, or they are just trying to provoke a fight. I think if you can not say what you think under your user name or if you do not posses the intelligence register then you should not be allowed to post. Just my thoughts!

This issue has been debated more times than I ever visited the UDT and we still have unregistered posters and this sort of clutter in the General forum.
Perhaps if this was placed in the Comments/Suggest forum it'd get more of a response from the mods/admins...assuming we still have admins.

I do think...... as mentioned many times before... unregistered people should not be allowed to post. I'm not entirely sure why it seems to be a huge issue. Unregistered posts seem to cause most of us members 'grief' and/or frustration. You are right ... many seem to just want to stir up problems. I feel it shouldn't be allowed.
If you don't want to log in .... you should be given the privs of viewing posts but not replying nor starting posts.
I see it as very simplistic. I wish CS would see it the same. :)

If you must debate this ad nauseum, you will find yet another thread recently moved from this forum to the Off-Topic forum.

Back in the old days, we just "ignored" jerks. These days, everyone seems to want to pass a law to ban jerks. Thing is, there are still jerks. They can't stir up grief if you just ignore them.

Hard to 'stir up too much grief'... if they can't post.
I'm not for banning unregistered users. I, myself, came to cliesource.. and just 'read' from time to time before I became a member. However I didn't post. :)

Yes, to ignore them is one way to look around the problem but to make them register to post is a way to solve it. I also do not see how this is should be in the off-topic area beings how this is directly related to the function of this site. Why should anyone have to come here and read through tons of clutter to get the small bit of information they need to help them. Even if an Unregistered user comes up with a good fix or app or such, how are we to PM them to get more info for our needs. Registering is free and if you feel that what you have to say is rude enough or bad enough or stupid enough that you don't want anyone knowing your ID then it prob. should not be posted.

I agree with this completely. No more unregistered posting allowed, no more complaints about unregistered postings. And, likewise, how in the world is this considered off-topic in the GENERAL area? Strange.

Not everyone posts as unregistered because they want to hide. Some people prefer to avoid cookies and other personal privacy invasion as possible.
Making up a login name does not reveal anything about anyone. If you don't want to answer or take the advice of someone unregistered then don't. Surely you have more important things to worry yourself with these days.
I am still waiting for an explanation of why registered "jerks" are allowed to post :).

This is the kind of crap that I was talking about!
Thanks Unregistered for the perfict example.
is the glass half full or half empty? maybe the question should be: how can we get more people to register? there are are always quite a few visitors on the board - how do you get them to register and join the community? or if your intent is just to ban these people in question, that implies you do not want them to register at all. in my mind, you need to also address the above poster - of what to do with registered people with no forum manners, and those who do not search whatsoever before posting truly inane questions. i don't want to name anyone, but just take a look at today's board or any other day, and you'll see what i mean. what about the palmgear team leader who apparantly is giving false information? that is a registered user, right? just try to post breaking news and find out that someone already posted it - and chances are (and just seach to see what i am talking about), you'll get an earfull. how about the registered users asking "how to give their TG a permenant hardreset"? why would you tolerate this post? how about a question of how long should the initial charge be for a brand new pda? shouldn't someone read the manual? people are bashing sony (for example with decuma) quite frequently. what's the difference between w100 and w110 - we'll surely see another thread pop up, and it could be from registerred. some of the registered users are accused of using warez - should you ban them too? i'd think you should rethink the whole board manners, rather than focusing on unregistered (or maybe someone is addressing this as well). i just think there is too much bashing on unregistered, and not enough of how to get more people to register, and how to clean up posts in general.

I don't know, maybe I've just been lucky, but most of the "unregistered" posts I've seen have been quite on target. They just say what the registered people can't because we have to be polite.

I been visiting ClieSource ever since I purchased my 760, I have since upgraded my CLIE twice. I have never registered, and have posted on a few occasions where I felt I could add value. I have seen this issue of "Damn the Unregistered" brought up over and over and over again. I appears to me that both Registered persons and Unregistered persons post "CRAP" from time to time, however it never 'bothers' me, I simply read or don't read and move on to more valuable information, just as one has to in the real world. The bottom line: The sites owners/operators have there reasons for allowing Unregistered visitors to post.
Sincerely,
Anthony Roubles

gbh, I do not think any one here wants to ban anyone. Just stop them from provoking trouble and filling this site with crap. To register is free and simple. If you feel you need to contribute to a thread then this is not a big demand. What if everyone was "Unregistered"? Think about this for just a few minutes before you anser.

And just how does registration stop anyone from posting crap? You know what registration accomplishes? You now have a screenname in a database somewhere. What is prevented? I could create 5-10-howevermany IDs each day to post stupid messages.

I personally understand where you are coming from, but I really think that this is a specific and separate issue and not necessarily whether one is rude or not. The rude issues should apply whether one is registered or not registered and I think that the Moderators should deal with that either way, regardless of whether one is registered or not. Unregistered posts can be nice as well, but it is, IMHO, a matter of helping to stop so much irritation, which keeps cropping up, for the registered users from those who feel they can just post anonymously as unregistered and therefore be lumped into the category of "unregistered" and then have no accountability for their remarks. Registered users are trackable in that respect and might/should think twice before making rude or inflammatory remarks. ;) I am not sure that any special encouragement needs to be made to someone to register. Just for the fact of being able to participate, I would think, would be incentive enough. Anyway, that's my take on it.

It is bound to help though since a registered user account is trackable and therefore could be removed if the person created a ton of trouble. ;) Apparently it has happened to some in the past. On the other hand, unregistered posts are like from one big unknown entity.

If you can not post then you can not post crap. I also beleave that the site only lets you create a few accounts on one IP. Any way this would make it harder for crap posters to gain access and all of there user names can be traced to one IP.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, really I'm not. Why would you think that the poster would only have one IP address? Most dialup users (which is most users) have ISPs that assign IP address dynamically. It is different each time they log on.
So let's say I post trash, get kicked off the site, make a new ID, post trash, get kicked off. It can continue forever. Isn't there some UtahJazz person (who later became someone I put on ignore ... he had some Harry Potter message in his sig) who keeps coming back with new IDs? Same jerk, different screenname.

Because it has NOTHING to do with Sony Clies and everything to do with site administration and comments. It is off topic for this forum and should be moved and addressed in the Comments/Suggest area.

Yes, but that is a lot of work to go to thus making it less likely to occure. They still can be identifyed here by what ever new user name they come up with insted of just "Unregistered".

It does have something to do with Sony Clies and how I get information from this site to use my Sony Clie. This site is just as valuable to my Clie as the MS or stylus.

oooo, jerk you say? UtahJazz or GnR as he is now known is the only person i've known who is able to state the obvious without getting insultive. Unregistereds get insulting and downright annoying, utahjazz is cool, he was banned for this reason but it was missinterpreted is you ask me......don't tell me "well no one asked you" cause i'll just state the obvious.....hehe (no i'm not GnR, just a friend of his) he indirectly showed me how to make people know they already have the answer in themselves

But, would you like to have to go through the effort of creating these accounts? Sure, there would still be problems with jerks working around whatever system is in place, but that is probably an issue the mods/webmaster would have to figure out how to resolve. As it is now, there is NO EFFORT to post as unregistered, so it is really simple.

Considering posts specific to an NZ for example would be moved to the NZ forum, these posts should be moved to the comment/suggest forum. There is a specific forum (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=19) available just for comments such as these.

More important question for you...
Why do you continue to argue the "Unregistered Issue?"
You must KNOW ClieSource Owners/Operators have made their decission to allow unregistered post. If you have issues with there decission maybe you should email them directly with your concerns or look into aquiring your own site where you can make your own regulations as you see fit, Im cetain the owner/operators have far more presing issues to focus on.

No moderator that I have seen has stepped in to confirm one way or the other if a decision has been made or if unregistered posting is as a result of a glitch on the site. I would think if they have made their decision to allow posts by unregistered users, then the FAQ (http://www.cliesource.com/forums/misc.php?action=faq&page=1#1) needs to be updated accordingly. ;)

Because I come here daily heck somtime I am here all day. And trying to find new information about my Clie without having to wade through a bunch of garbage to find it. I have supported this site for a long time and will continue unregistered posters or not. Not long ago a New launcher was released to the palm world I was one of the first to skin this launcher. I started a forum to get a new section in the files for it. It is now there and can be found under Skins,Zlauncher. Otheres have started other treads in this same nature to get changes made to the site. Such as the Launcher Forum. And what more presing issue could there be than to make shure the site is fitted to those who use it?

Anthony, it sounds as though you could help alot of others here at cliesource. Why don't you register and make a name for your self here that others can trust and count on and respect your thoughts. You can't get this being unregistered.

Perhaps Anthony does not need your "respect" and "trust". For heaven's sake this is a message board.
Amazing how many people seem to take this personally. Do you get mad at a book that says something you don't like? Do you constantly bombard the publisher with whines to change it?
The faceless names here are but pixels on a screen.

you're very welcome! If you come to this site for entertainment, then you should register, because then you could get involved in some of the discussions in the off-topic forum, where the conversation is always entertaining, and sometimes even thought provoking (until you start trying to talk politics w/ some people, then it gets down-right ugly.)
