MP3 Player seems to be fussy

Is it just me or do other people have problems transfering MP3 files to their NX?

I could download from emusic and transfer MP3 files to my NR just fine and those old files play on my NX (thank goodness I had some good ones) but files from the same source cannot be converted in the Sound Converter and when straight copied to a MS show on the Clie player as "bad".

Is there maybe a replacement player which works like the NR one?

What do you mean by 'Sound Convertor'? I use Realone/MusicMatch to convert to MP3 and have no problems transferring files using MS Import (I've been using this method on my N760 and NX70 no problems at all).

You're not using Magicgate are you?

I just tried MS Import and got the same result, tracks which are unplayable on the NX.

No, I am not using Magicgate. I am wondering if emusic has done something different.

Sony's OS 5 PDAs won't work with VBR MP3s. You will have to encode them as fixed rate and 44.1kHz if you want them to work on the NX.

I have done a lot of experimentation with MP3's on my NX80. The results seem to indicate that as long as you code your MP3's at a constant bitrate, you can use ANY bitrate of MP3 file. The only limitation is that you must have at LEAST 32KHZ sample rate - not 44.1KHZ as you indicate. Any sample rate above 32KHZ will work, even if your resulting MP3 file has a super low bitrate (like 24K).

Crap, I've been trying for hours to copy MP3s (using Acoustica)to both the CF and the MS. I've checked the settings and set the bitrate to128.
I have also installed mini's program for the CF player. The movie players work fine. The Export says "no card" or "no drive"
I also tried to move/copy from the CF and MS to the Palm Card using Filez. It says an error occured.

Oh, yeah, I'm a newbie with a NX80.
I also bought the girlfriend a NX60 last Xmas.
Had no problems burning MP3s and putting them on MS.

Any ideas????

Once again, the BITRATE DOES NOT MATTER. You can have anything from a 24K to 320K bitrate, and the player does NOT care.

What is important is that when you encode the MP3's originally, the SAMPLE RATE must be at least 32KHZ.

The MP3 file MUST go in this directory on the memory stick:

/PALM/PROGRAMS/MSAUDIO

Don't know about the CF location, I don't use CF for my MP3's (At least not yet :) )

MP3's must be stored in the same location on a CF card (/PALM/PROGRAMS/MSAUDIO ). I've been using this with the Eruware driver and no problems.

Yeah AC, I saw your earlier post. I was trying everything.
Ok, it was a newbie problem as the directory I used I spelt wrong.
Now they play on the MS but the "Mini" CF player just says "no Memory Stick" I used the same /Palm/Programs/MSAudio on the CF. I formated in the Clie.

I'll keep trying!!!

Got it!!!!
Clue was this note on Mini's page:

/* A limitation of "CFAudioPlay" */
(1) It doesn't work if it is not the condition which memory-stick is set on.
(2) Please remove a check "Enable background play" on the Priferences screen.
If a check isn't removed, a play list isn't renewed well

I looked everywhere for this and couldn't find it.
I removed the CF card and then opened the CF Audio Player, then
I inserted the CF card. WORKS!!!!
Now back to ripping 192kbps!!!

The new NX's must have an updated audio player. On the older NX's, it had to be 44.1kHz and at least 96kbps for the MP3's to work.

Thanks for the info. In the past I had difficulty with rates below 44.1kHz, but I believe it was because the files were encoded as 22kHz. Nice to know I can at least drop it down to 32kHz.

You state that on the older Clie devices the MP3 sample rate must be at least 44.1 KHZ - This is interesting to know. I only have an NX80 to work with, which obviously limits the MP3 experiments I can do :D

Is there anyone else out there who has tried a 32KHZ sample rate MP3 or a 44.1KHZ sample rate MP3 with a bitrate lower than 96K on an older Clie? I would like very much to have other people confirm what cbulock has reported.
