Anyone could explain a bit on the ATRAC file? What's the benefit compare to MP3?

Recently I bought SanDisk MS Pro which I suppose is MagicGate compatible therefore I should be able to use ATRAC file.

But so far hv no clue how to create and copy ATRAC file to my Clie.

Thanks for the help.

Plus, MS Pro currently can't do ATRAC3. Even though it has Magic Gate, something about the Pro sticks doesn't let it work. I think I heard they have to update the SonicStage software. Doesn't really matter since MP3 is the way to go anyway.

To me, using ATRAC3 is like imposing self torture!!!

With the check-in, check-out nonsense, plus if you put music on the Clie, you can't use it on the desktop PC and vice-versa! It's all about copy right issues, yuck :(!

Cameron is absolutely correct, the MS Pro does NOT support ATRAC3 on the Clie, period!

This makes me wonder why Sony advertises ATRAC sound capability as a positive feature... Perhaps the hardware guys trying to keep the record company division happy...

Well, that's it exactly. On the one hand, the Sony recording label has hundreds of artists and thousands of songs for sale. On the other hand, Sony sells hardware for playing music. While the music players were for cassette tapes and CDs, there was no problem, since the user had to buy the music. But, now that it's typical for music players to play MP3 files, the user doesn't actually need to buy the music anymore.

Sony wants to try to protect its music arm by creating a horribly convoluted system for music transfer to its portable music players. This is called ATRAC3.

I suspect that the decision is simply killing off their hardware sales and not really increasing their music sales.

With solely mention of ATRAC3 phrase in any Sony product
start me thinking 10 times before buy any device
it's a poor explained term
and make me doubt about the posibility to play well any MP3 file
not mentioning the deep trench make with the diferneces between magic gate and std MS
they just want segment the market to take more wather to the own mill

Greetings again!

You know.... the irony of this is that Sony has released at least 2 portable stereo units (ghetto blasters) that I know of (I personally own one of these models) and at least 1 car stereo that I am aware of, all of which will let you burn 100+ MP3 files on a recordable CD and play them. No ATRAC3 nonsense there :D

This tells me that even within Sony itself, there is disagreement or a lack of overall strategy for DRM protected digital music. I think, though, that Sony hardware division probably realizes the futility of creating schemes like ATRAC3, but cannot do anything about it because of internal pressures from it's music and movie division.

Just my $.03 - adjust for inflation!

It just goes to show that in some cases, Sony actually has some brains!
