I am a curious SJ30 owner and I am just wondering what you gus think are some of the best and essential programs for the SJ30. I am running out of programs and need some sugestions. Think of this like a poll or something.

What do you already have - no sense suggesting something youve been using already...I use the heck out of Agendus, Today 1.8, HandyShopper, AcidImage etc....

PalmaSutra... ;-)

Actually, I don't use very many third party programs. But I will recommend Documents to Go, WordSmith, Bejewelled and a few other programs.

ZLauncher (http://www.zztechs.com/en/zlauncher/) - Best launcher
DateBk5 (http://www.pimlicosoftware.com/) - Best calendar and To Do replacement
SuperNames (http://standalone.com/palmos/super_names/) - Best addressbook replacement
Shadow (www.codejedi.com) - Best outliner, note taker, ToDo-lister and task manager
AcidImage (http://www.red-mercury.com/acidimage.html) - Best image viewer
Handstory (www.handstory.com) - web clipping, eBook reader, and more
InWatch (http://www.stacworks.com/index.html) - Best uninstall utility (monitors installations to ensure a complete uninstall)
SplashID (http://www.splashdata.com/splashid/index.htm) - personal identification organizer: securely store passwords, PINs, accounts, and much more. I use this extensively to keep track of my software licenses and registration numbers.
SplashShopper (http://www.splashdata.com/splashshopper/index.htm) - Shopping list application for groceries, movies, CDs, etc.

X-Master (http://linkesoft.com/xmaster/) - hack/extension manager
CaseToggleHack (http://www.di.uminho.pt/~rco/pilot/casetoggle.html) - easily toggle letters' case by tapping
Font Hack 123 (http://www.sergem.net/fonthack123/) - substitute fonts for better readability
PopUp Favorites (http://www.benc.hr/popfavor.htm) - Use a stroke to quickly switch between apps (without having to go to the launcher)

TealDoc, YiShow, WordSmith (a must), and some others that aren't really worth mentioning. But I found this great little program on tucows called mirrors. Its a doodle-pad kind of program that copies whatever you write into all four quadrants of the screen. Sort of like you'd see on a graphing calculator.

Most of the recommendations you guys have made are shareware so eventually it would require buying them, some sooner than others. Are you guys really going out and spending all this money on extra apps? I personally feel like for that much money I'd rather just use what's on the Clie, I mean what's on there already isn't that bad really.

Cuz all these apps add up...my wife and I are debating whether or not to spend the $20 for TextPlus and that's just one app.

If you are not sure with the program, try the tryout version.

If you really love the software and you care about licensing, Buy it !!!!!

If you really love the software and kind a tight with the money...
spend your time infront of the computer and start searching for the free one.

If you lucky enough, you can get good stuff out there. =)

I think for myself I found it was worth it to buy the apps I knew i would use. After spending all that money on my clie I wanna make sure i get the best and most use out of it. I was not happy with the datebook application that came with my clie and found datebk5 to be great. this means I will use my clie as a datebook all the more!
After all you would not just use your pc with the built in apps would you?
Mind you i do think if they lowered the prices on same of the apps like bejeweled more people would be likely to buy them. But that is just my 2 cents and being a canuck and all we end up paying almost double with the $ exchange!

One program that I have been using extensively the last weeks since I bought my SJ30 is Pilot Install:

http://pinstall.envicon.com/

It is basically a *FREE*, very worthy substitute for the standard Palm Install Tool. It does everything the same, but much faster, and more:

1) You can assign windows to send a .prc file to Pilot Install after double-clicking the file

2) If it has been queued, just press hotsync on the handheld

3) Only the file will be synced! And at 256000 bps, twice the normal hotsync speed!

4) An extra is that you can load .jpg or .gif or .bmp images directly on your handheld and *do not* need an external viewer to watch them.

Combined with easylaunch, it takes me about 5 seconds to download a palm program and to have it fully installed on my Clie. Please let me know if there are others with the same positive experience with this programme.

OK, you're asking for useful freeware apps. Here are mine (including Hacks and DAs):
Apps: Kinoma Player, FileZ, 2DMemo, Progect, Projects, Yaps, ATool!, LeftOvers, McFile 1.13, MemoRu!, MetricMeasure, Speedy, SwitchDash, SysTool, TapeMeasure, AlwaysOn, BigClock, ChemTable, MyPalm, PalmReader 1.0.6, Ruler, Word Comp 1.0, X-Master
Hacks: EasyLaunch, Crash, DALauncher, ClockPop
DAs: AudioCtrl, CalCal, Call Lookup DA, daMemoPad, HRCaptDA, LClipDA, ResetDA, StopWatch, System Analyzer, VolumeDA
Games: Bejeweled! 1.17, Gammon 1.2, HardBall, Hearts, MineHunt, OpenChess, Patience, PegSol, Piloth, Pilotski, Puzzle, Pyramid, SubHunt, Vexed, vPoker, Yahdice.

You can find what they are or what they do, most of them, by searching this site or look to the Application page of this site or nXtClieClub Files, and PalmGear.

It really depends what you need and what works best for you. Some freeware I like:
CRS-Launcher - launcher replacement
X-Master - hack management
Projects - tasks by project
Progect - outliner
Filez - file management
Happy Days - birthday reminders
FontHack

I'm currently experimenting with a combination of freeware and inbuilt apps to meet my datebook needs. HotDate gives me a today-type view of appointments and tasks. Selecting an appointment takes me to the default datebook. And selecting the weekly view (from datebook) takes me to the awesome A5 - check this one out, it is really good and shows huge promise.

Registered apps I use regularly include
TextPlus - speed up text entry
HandBase - excellent relational database
QuickOffice - word processing and spreadsheet
ShadowPlan - my mainstay app - outliner

Enjoy!

Collectively, the handheld itself is always the cheapest part!

It's like going to a major league baseball game these days...the cheapest part of the experience by far are the tickets...it's the parking, the food, the beer, the must-have souvenir that kill ya...

Gary:

Good analogy w/ baseball.

The subtle thing about buying Palm shareware is that it's only $20. Or $8 (and $8 and $10 and $29 and $15 .... over and over).

$8 here and $29 there - after a year, can add up to real money (as so many of us know). But - it lasts longer than some impulse purchases you make on the weekend for $8 or $15.

And USUALLY the demos are good enough to decide before parting with the bucks...but who among us isn't licensed to a bunch of Palm aps that are no longer used? I've got a lovely registered copy of WordSmith, a fine app for sure, but useless to me now that I have a laptop as well. Fortunately, as is the case with WordSmith and few others, they will let you transfer registration so it's possible to sell & recoup something!

But funny thing is, sometimes you come back around and reload an unused program. I bought HandStory a month ago and ditche my copy of iSilo, thinking HandStory would replace it. Well...iSilo's back on as my main doc reader, but still like HandStory for enhanced memo work and for it's clip feature (but still use iSilo for the more esoteric, misison-critical web clips such as my toons!).

Convert that into Cdn $ and watch your costs increase. I find it more attractive to buy on-line too and I'm not sure why because then I have to wait for things to arrive:(
