OOOooooooooohhhhh........
I can't wait to see what it is! If it is anything near as good as an NX80, I'll have to consider an upgrade :D
Best regards,
Bawko
P.S. I LOVE your sig - being a fan of quality pr0n myself!

When the birdy told me the news, it literally put my NX80 purchase on hold (I was *THIS* close).
If they get the NZXX anywhere close to the size of the NX80, I'm so there.

hopefully 64mb internal RAM .... Built in WiFi ...... Cam is fine the way it is... but it should have a better battery .... 400mhz cpu(or higher) and PRO-STICK Transfer speeds ..... OS 5.2 or higher .......that will be the bomb if they do all of this!

Uh oh!! Here we go again. We've just got through all the speculation about spec's for replacement Clie's when the NX73V and NX80V were announced and now we're eagerly anticipating a replacement for the NZ90, will it never end????
(Hope not, it's fun, isn't it?)
Joe
joemit: yep, you are right it will never end + those of us, owners of TG50, are also awaiting a replecement :-)

sorry but you wont have a camera the quality of the 90 with the size of the 80. physically impossible. so stop dreaming

Its not physcially impossible. I bet that if you were to tell people 20 yeasr ago that you could make a digital camera that didn't need film, could automatically delete unwanted pictures to be able to take more, and make it small enough to hide in the palm of your hand, while providing real or near picture quality for a reasonble they would have said its physically impossible and burned you for being a witch (ok I exagerated that last point, but the rest of it is true). We have made incredible advances in electronics (for better or worse I won't say) because people didn't say its impossible, its because they said why not, why can't we do that.
Never say it is impossible, it might not be probable at this current technological state, but it is never impossible.

First of all...it was a joke! Secondly, the NX80 is probably what the NZ should have been...at least, it is what the NX70 should have been. It has a reasonable form factor, good battery life, excellent features, more available RAM...and a GOOD digital camera. OK, so it isn't 2 MP, it's only 1.3 MP...but at least the thing fits in yor pocket, has a usable battery, and has a real cradle.
The NZ has been a flop for Sony. The reviews have been mixed at best, the sales have been disappointing, and the price is prohibitive to all but the most die-hard enthusiasts.
Is the feature set impressive...absolutely...but at what price? Lousy form factor, lousy battery life, and a cradle that was poorly designed.
I just don't think Sony needs an NZ replacement, when they have a respectable, high-end device out now, and a whole new high-end series coming out next month. I may be wrong...just my opinion, but Sony doesn't need another high-end, high-priced model in their line-up.

There are lots of us that agree with you PalmDoc. I just wish Sony would pay attention. There is a huge mid-market out there but I guess they have decided to just let Palm have it.

It is amusing how passionate people are both for and against the NZ90. People always way overstate the weaknesses of the NZ90, but no one can deny it's strength. We will see an NZ90 replacement and it will improve on what is still today the most impressive PDA on the market.

ALso, I'm pretty sure the new NZ will be announced in september and available sometime in November. This will be a great Holiday season this year.
I'm curious to see what this NZ replacement might be, if indeed it exists. My suspicion when the NX80 was announced was that that would be considered the NZ replacement. Sure it doesn't have as good a camera, or integrated BT (but it could have, Sony just decided we didn't want it), but it comes pretty close to the specs of the NZ, with a smaller form factor and better battery life. If the NZ weren't selling well, I could see how Sony might want to scale back a little bit and make the top-of-the-line NX cover most of the features of the NZ.
Of course the lack of BT in the NX80 could always be a sign that there is an NZ coming soon, and Sony wanted to make sure its specs were enough ahead of the NX80 to make people want to pay extra for it.
If there is an NZ, I really wonder what they'll put in it. I guess integrated Wi-Fi and BT plus a 2+MP camera would put it enough ahead of the NX80 to rate an extra $200.

So what do you all think, will it have a Xscale CPU at 200 Mhz like the NZ90 or will it have a HandHeld Engine like the UX40/50?
One might think that Sony will only use their one CPU in their CLIE's from now on, or will they?
It sure will be interesting to see which...

Built in Wi-Fi . I bet my entire savings on it.
And still an iron in your pocket.

Everyone wants a 400mhz processor. I had a tungsten c and it is not any faster than the NX/NZ processor. I liked the NZ but got rid of it for the NX80. I can't wait to see the new NZ!

Not faster at what, using the address book?!? Sheeeeeite.........
T|C is the first Palm OS device I used that in some cases were literally too fast for some apps. GT Racing @ 400Mhz XSCale = WWWAAAYYYY too fast and UNPLAYABLE!!!!! LOL
Bunch of the apps I use, like AcidImage and the Flash player will benefit greatly with the PXA255/263@ 400Mhz. And you will definitely see the difference plain as day.
Anyways, all I want from the new NZ is a smaller body (I wouldn't mind putting up with the new retractable toothpick stylus for this), at least a 300Mhz XScale, 64MB of RAM so that I can have 32MB of user available RAM (knowing Sony :p), BT, more efficient but still REAL flash, and same level of screen brightness/contrast at least. I don't care how they do WI-fi: built in or retractable CF slot.

i wouldnt be suprised if this new claimed nz is 400mhz
since the nz is the power house
once again size maybe a key decision decider
Yes, you should lure that little bird into a corner and then hold a worm infront of it =) And then ask it to reveal everything about the new NZ...
Btw, how reliable is this bird?

obviously you have not seen the Casio S3 3mp digital camera
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/exs3.html
I believe it is the world's thinnest 3.2 megapixel camera there is. The battery is tiny (cell phone size) and you can take up to 250 pictures with flash. It's rated at one of the best battery life digital cameras and it is only half an inch thick!
sony could easy squeeze something like this in an NX casing. well maybe not easily.

We were discussing UX50 (basically me complaining about it) when I asked about what's gonna happen to the NZ. That's when the birdy told me about the new NZ. Thus, this unit in september has nothing to do with UX50 or 40.
The birdy was only previlaged to the fact that a replacement is in the works for the NZ. The birdy haven't got to see it yet.
And as for reliability, the birdy knew back when we were still speculating about the new NX (about a month before the NX80 was revealed at the Sony Japan site) that it would remain @ 200Mhz instead of 300Mhz that we've heard in one of our more reliable rumors. At the time I didn't believe the birdy, but now I know I should have.

Is it that Sony doesn't need a NZ or they just need a NX with the NZ camera? What else is *really* different about the two?

The information that the little bird told you about the announcement of the next generation NZ unit is definately correct.
In the previous threads that I have posted about the timing of an NZ replacement, a considerable number of Cliesource members have speculated since April 2003 on what it should or might look like as well as the badly needed improvements from the PEG-NZ90/U.
If a new NZ unit is announced in September it would be consistent with Sony's policy to replace Clies every 6 months.
There are numerous threads in the NZ Forum by Cliesource members on what improvements should be incorporated in the next generation NZ unit so I wont review them here. I think the two questions we should be asking is what the final design will look like and will THEY CORRECT THE INSUFFICENT RAM PROBLEM!!!!.
Since I am only speculating I think that Sony will do one of three things with the final design with the unit. First and least likely they may make improvements to the original PEG-NZ90/U design based on the comments in the NZ forums. Second, they may merge the NZ90 and NX80 design to make it somwhat lighter and smaller although it may make incorporating a 3.2-5mp camera much more difficult if they intend to keep the rotating screen and clamshell style. Third, they might take a revolutionary step in throwing the clamshell design away and creating a tablet form unit minus the keyboard. This means that Sony can either incoporate a Wi-Fi/CF-II slot at the top of the unit, leave the MS-Pro slot near the bottomleft/right side of the unit while incorporating a stationary (if possible) 3.2-5mp camera with flash with a 2X or greater digital zoom with a sliding cover at the back.
It will be interesting to see what they will come up with.
Lastly Sony Electronics HAS TO INCREASE the INTERNAL RAM for the next generation NZ unit. The 11mb of user ram is simply inadequate to handle the increasing number of third party application and upgrade programs from Sony. For example Sony just released an upgrade program for the NZ90 bluetooth function. When the file was unzipped it came to 1.320kb. My NZ90 has 2kb of ram left. If I installed the upgrade program I would virtually have no memory left to do any thing else. If I were to load this program into the ram I would have to move (with little choice) the applications & games programs to the MS& MS Pro and use MS autorun for favorite programs or Power Run 1.2 (when it can work with OS5 properly). Using eruware software and a highspeeed 1 Gb CF-II card is another solution.
Sony should incorporate between 64 and 128mb of user ram while keeping flash ram for future OS upgrades to 8mb (about 3.5mb in the North American NZ90's if I am correct?) This should make the next generation NZ unit on par with the Palm T/C or any future releases by the newly merged Palm/Handspring firm.
The second benefit is that users will have adequate memory for the upgrade programs for Sony as well as application software and the complaints will stop.
On a smaller note it would be really nice if Sony redesigned the Memory Stick to be a direct access ram memory but as we all know it will take years before it happens.
I guess I have said a lot about what the new NZ will look like. It remains to be seen If Sony will listen to customers and create another revolutionary/ evolutionary product that will once again make it the undisputed leader in Palm hand held computing.
Cheers:)

No offense, but speculating really doesn't do us a whole lot. We all know what we want, and for many of us it differs a bit. EVERYONE wants more internal memory and better camera. Aside from that, it comes down to communications. But speculating ......... we all do that!

I would imagine that increased RAM is a given... NX80 and the UX line as examples.... I suspect we'll see the "handheld engine" as well.
Screw the HiRes+ tablet form factor. I could buy an iQue if I wanted that...
CF slot will be gone. WiFI and Bluetooth onboard.
Camera resolution up to 3MP. Doubt we'll see optical zoom though. Be sweet if they did.. I wouldn't mind the same barrel type as the 80, but a better build quality. My 80's cam felt loose, plasticy and cheap. I imagine they stay same config, slimmed down and hotsync port back to the bottom. Like to see some software settings to disable flash chargeup before camera use.
Still want a replaceable battery. Imagine how nice it'd be if we could charge it seperately????!!
I liked all the proggies preloaded in ROM on the 80. Expect we'll see that as well.
All guesses. Curious what the great Sony comes out with to part me with my hard earned $$$!!
