View Full Version : Where does all the RAM go?

Okay,
I am purchasing my NX70 this Saturday. I have a couple of questions concerning ram. I know it's only 11 user megs and I hear a bunch of folk complaining about running out of ram.
My past Clies have not had this problem, I have a 3/4 meg database, a 1/2 meg worth of Word Smith docs and 1 1/2 megs worth of games. My 665 had 5 megs free with all the other garbage I had loaded on it.
Is there something different about the way the NX allocated files that would cause it to suck up more memory?

The clie preloaded A LOT of software on the RAM that we can't delete. There might be more to it than that, but a big chunk of the missing 5 mb is clie apps. I don't have a problem with memory on mine, i have a lot of apps and 3 games loaded on along with 2 Bibles (3mb together) and i still have 2.5 mb left over. I'm not one to complain about it, although it would be nice if we had a full 16 mb!

Enjoy.

No! The memory allocation is the same :).

Because most of the apps and their associated data can be moved to the MS on the NX, it seems that most users have not found much trouble with the 11meg cap.
My only problems have been slight inconviences. To remap an app to the hard buttons it must apparently be on the device itself. Similarly, some text readers want to find the documents only on the handheld itself.
Mostly, you just shuffle a few files around.
Face it folks, most of us have ALOT of dross taking up space....

This is wrong. The apps are in ROM; a large part of RAM was dedicated to the 'dynamic heap' -- think of this like RAM on a PC. The bigger this 'heap', the more complex the programs you can run. NX has 4MB, while the Tungsten has a paltry 768k (which is why NetFront is unuseable on it). This is a GOOD thing -- dynamic heap space allocation cannot be altered, thus it's better to make it as big as possible (remember, with PowerRUN, storage RAM isn't as vital). This will greatly extend the life of the NX.

Working with 11 MB was a pain at first, but after I did some 'spring cleaning' I ended up dumping alot of apps and garbage I wasn't using, leaving me with a whopping 4 MB surplus.

My only gripe is waiting for the larger memory sticks to come out so, I won't be forced to swap sticks 'in the field.' I can have external files and enough room for alot of pictures and video, on the same stick!

The NX is so fast that the 11 MB really isn't a problem, MS access is ALOT faster. It's just tricky finding out which programs like the MS and which you have to have on the machine itself.

I have 6.2 free and I use the wireless CF slot... I just moved what I could to the MStick... really a non issue... but I am still waiting for JackSprat/Flash...

I stand corrected, thank you for the correction. I'm man enough to admit when i'm wrong :)

Enjoy.

I'm glad there are some people who understand that the large amount of heap memory is a GOOD thing! I just can't wait until some really cool game comes out and all those Tungsten guys and with their "extra 3 megs of usable RAM" won't be able to run it. :D

Former TT user, and now with a better understand of what the memory is allocated for makes it easier. But the screen rocks. Now if people would just start supporting HiRES+ more in the game arena.
