So.. after a couple of weeks of owning the NX80 and having now put it through it’s paces, using it daily in a real world environment, here are my thoughts on the hardware, itself… I’ll avoid commenting on the software and drivers.

Pros:
1. Better balance in clamshell mode than previous NX models. But it is not as comfortable in the hand as previous models.
2. Additional buttons on LCD are very handy.
3. Heavy?, no not that bad, but noticeably heavier than previous models.
4. LCD is very bright, with good color depth. Much better than previous NR and NX models. You can use your old NR / NX screen protectors, too.
5. Battery life so far has been excellent.
6. Camera takes good pictures and video in conditions with plenty of light.
7. Camera focus is good but you need to practice to get the best shots. (see cons).
8. Reset switch can be accessed with most anything, no need for the special “tool” needed in previous models.
9. Keyboard, overall, very good feel to it.
10. Sufficient RAM memory. Too bad so much is wasted on unused built in apps with no way to recover it.
11. Stable, doesn’t crash… Always Hotsyncs without problems and Data Import works good.

Cons:
1. In the cradle the on/off – hold switch is impossible to access. I kind of miss the on/of switch being on the front of the unit.
2. In the cradle you cannot easily remove the memory stick.
3. You cannot have a CF card inserted and take photos with the camera rotated 300 degrees.
4. Stylus… please, there has to be something better than this.
5. CF slot takes up extra space if you leave a card in at all times. I think this CF slot is going to be a maintenance problem as the unit gets used and abused.
6. Keyboard light is timed to cut off too soon. Should have a software switch to set on/off time.
7. Can’t read the tiny characters below the keyboard keys in less than optimal light.
8. Camera must be held steady or you get blurred photos. The capture buttons on the screen and built in do help but you need to be perfectly still.
9. The LCD is already a little loose. At this rate it will have to be tightened regularly.

And… I haven’t dropped it yet to see if it will survive the shock.
Anybody tried that?...
:D

Yep! Hardware wise I'd say you summed it up pretty good. I've gone through 5 models of Clies so far and I have to say that this is my favorite so far.

Greetings!

I agree - from what I have seen, this is the best Clie ever!
I have also had mine for 2 weeks, and have nothing to complain about - it just WORKS!!!!

Just a side note on the power switch situation, I do not personally find this to be a problem of any kind. I just use one of the application quick start buttons to get the NX80 started, then use the home button to get to the application I want.

Best regards,
Bawko

I'm currently waiting (impatiently) for my new NX80!

Couple of questions...

Can I simply hotsync data from my current T665 (after deleting certain apps such as hacks) into the new NX80 to make the switch?

Also, does PalmReader (I use PalmReader every night!) allow you to read in horizontal view, or/and eliminate the graffiti area for a larger area of text?

Can't wait for my new Clie to arrive!

Thanks for any info you guys can provide while I wait.

Oh yes, PalmReader is fully compatible with HiRes+ so you can read it from any orientation, even upside down minus VG!

I would advise against hotsyncing your T665 stuff, even if you think you've got all the hacks and likely non-compatible apps out. I selectively installed a bunch of my old apps at once, thinking it was all the safe ones, and got a bunch of trouble and had to hard reset and start over. I remember several other people saying they got crashes when they added too many apps back at once. After the reset, I started with ZLauncher and Datebk5 because those were the ones that were crashing, as well as two of my most-used apps. When those worked I added back a couple at a time, making sure everything was fine, until I was done. The other thing is that some apps which are OS5-compatible have different versions for each OS, and your T665 might have the wrong one.

I have PalmReader PRO, and it does allow turning the screen in any direction, as well as eliminating the graffiti area. Not sure about the free PalmReader.

This is the best clamshell Clie I've had. Great pros an cons! BTW, how do you tighten the screen?

i thought you couldn't hotsync from scratch from another pda - due to the shortcuts referring back to the m/s, not to mention you'd want hi res + programs where available (e.g., megaclock install options)?
