So.. after a couple of weeks of owning the NX80 and having now put it through it’s paces, using it daily in a real world environment, here are my thoughts on the hardware, itself… I’ll avoid commenting on the software and drivers.
Pros:
1. Better balance in clamshell mode than previous NX models. But it is not as comfortable in the hand as previous models.
2. Additional buttons on LCD are very handy.
3. Heavy?, no not that bad, but noticeably heavier than previous models.
4. LCD is very bright, with good color depth. Much better than previous NR and NX models. You can use your old NR / NX screen protectors, too.
5. Battery life so far has been excellent.
6. Camera takes good pictures and video in conditions with plenty of light.
7. Camera focus is good but you need to practice to get the best shots. (see cons).
8. Reset switch can be accessed with most anything, no need for the special “tool” needed in previous models.
9. Keyboard, overall, very good feel to it.
10. Sufficient RAM memory. Too bad so much is wasted on unused built in apps with no way to recover it.
11. Stable, doesn’t crash… Always Hotsyncs without problems and Data Import works good.
Cons:
1. In the cradle the on/off – hold switch is impossible to access. I kind of miss the on/of switch being on the front of the unit.
2. In the cradle you cannot easily remove the memory stick.
3. You cannot have a CF card inserted and take photos with the camera rotated 300 degrees.
4. Stylus… please, there has to be something better than this.
5. CF slot takes up extra space if you leave a card in at all times. I think this CF slot is going to be a maintenance problem as the unit gets used and abused.
6. Keyboard light is timed to cut off too soon. Should have a software switch to set on/off time.
7. Can’t read the tiny characters below the keyboard keys in less than optimal light.
8. Camera must be held steady or you get blurred photos. The capture buttons on the screen and built in do help but you need to be perfectly still.
9. The LCD is already a little loose. At this rate it will have to be tightened regularly.
And… I haven’t dropped it yet to see if it will survive the shock.
Anybody tried that?...
:D
