Well i too am a new user. but i just ordered my protectors today.. i kinda think i see a few scratches after 4 weeks of use.
I have so far not found the case of my dreams... gee why don't they make pda cases for ladies?( you know with the lipstick side pockets? :D )So I am going case free right now and it seems just fine.

I love my SJ30 and nothing in the new offerings as made me change my mind:)
Screen protector - definitely get one. go for one that reduces glare and lasts - do a search.
Aluminium case - got a DSI one and I really like it. What I would really like is a plastic cover that comes off like my Visor Deluxe had.
Garmin Summit - My husband has an Etrex Legend. I think the Summit is just a little more elaborate isn't it? The Legend cannot connect to my SJ30. I think you need a USB port to connect the two.

I decide not to buy anything, except a 128MB MS, of course. I just use the cover that comes with it, no case, no screen protector. By the speed of Sony pushout these new models, probably it will be SJ-99 when my SJ-30 is still 80% new.

Yes, you should get a screen protector.
Yes, you should get a case. Aluminum or not is up to you. I have a DSI which is nice. I also have a Sena leather case. I like being able to switch between them depending on situation.

Disclaimer: I have the SJ20, not the SJ30.
Screen Protector: I'd say yes. After a month of using a screen protector I finally got fed up with that "fuzzy" dull look and took it off. I cut the next protector so that only the graffitti area is covered and the top view portion of the screen is naked. WooHoo.. brilliant and bright and just like new.. all the excitement has flooded back again. hee.
The graffitti area gets 99% of the stylus use and therefore my scratches.
Case: I have the free sony case and I love it. Will do me just fine until some day when I find I have more money than I have bills. Hee.

For those with the DSI metal cases. I looked at their web site and the pictures look like the hinged top would get in the way of using the SJ30. I would think for us right handers, and most of us are, the case would open from the left side.
How does the case work? It looks cool but cannot tell about functionality.

I have the DSI on my SJ30, and I don't think that it gets in the way at all. In fact, I would go one step further and say that you never ever want a case that doesn't open up. The reason is that when you attempt to hold the Clie with one hand, if the case opens up, you can hold it firmly, with your fingers on one side and the palm of your hand on the other. If you use a case that opens to the side, you can't really do that and the case has to simply rest in the palm of your hand. I hope that makes sense.
The DSI case has cut-outs on the top for all of the stuff you need access to; memory stick, IR port, stylus. The one and only complaint that I have about the DSI is that it is a little hard to get the stylus out with the case open. With it closed it is easy, but not with it open. I have a 4-in-1 stylus pen that I use most of the time so it usually isn't a problem.

As pointed out above, the top-opening allows for a firm, unobstructed grip.

Wow ! Thanks everyone for responding !
I have taken your advice and bought a (brando) screen protector and because I normally wreck gadgets by sitting on them and dropping them... I have bought a case !
Although it's side opening which doesn't sound as good as the DSI one...

A-lady... surely you can just find a nice purse/bag that is the same size as the PDA, and keep it well protected in there...
I would just look weird if I had one of those !
cass_m - I'm sure you can connect these without usb... the cable I use to connect to my PC is a serial cable... I'll email Garmin and ask them... Thanks though.
terry11242003 - Is it a good idea to buy more ram then ? How quick does this fill up... concidering i'm not using it to store MP3s or anything like that.

I would say that memory card is mandatory. I don't store MP3 either, but I can use MS for document, photo, video, etc., and once I get PowerRUN, I can even run most of the application from MS directly without using that precious 16MB on board. You should definitely get one.
