View Full Version : Will the UX-50 (or 40) work with Macs (via Missing Sync?)

I'm seriously considering buying the UX-50 or NZ-90 for college. I really like the UX-50 design, but then again I like the 2MP camera and some other features of the NZ-90.

Basically I would be using it to check email, browse the web a little, calendar take notes/photos, and maybe listen to MP3s (although I'll probably get an iPod too...)

My college (USC) has WiFi over a large portion of the campus so thats what I'll mostly be using. I also have a Bluetooth cell phone but no data service yet.

So, will the MissingSync work with the UX-50? What about Bluetooth?

Also, how long should I expect to wait for the UX-50's price to drop? The UX-50 price is about $700, and the NZ-90 retail is $800. The NZ-90 sells for about $650 at the lowest, so how much should I expect to pay for the UX-50? Maybe $550?

I'm asking all this in the Mac forum because I'm a Mac users...and I'm sure you guys can generally give me more relevent information than those peecee guys in the other forums ;)

I'm torn between the two. Cool form factor and built in WiFi, or huge brick with 2MP camera? Help!

Cheesy from MAF? Hey it's me, Tickle-Me-Eric! You helped me set up my fancy voice activated house (which works AWESOME by the way!)...

Anyway, I can't really answer many of your questions, except say that I think you will have to wait for Missing Sync to get updated for it to work with the new UX's, but a lot of Clié just sync now with iSync, so unless you want the fancy photo syncing and so on features of Missing Sync, it may not matter...

Best of Luck

Oh hey Eric! Glad to hear the x10 stuff is working. Next we have to figure out how to control it all with our Clies! Do you have the NZ-90 or what?

So does iCal and the Address Book sync with Clies via iSync? How about transfering programs and other files to/from the Clie? But I have a 6-in-1 card reader so I guess I wouldn't even need that.

I have an NX70V. Not the newest kid on the block, but she gets the job done and since I over clocked her she feels 2x as fast! I am learning to get High Quality Videos onto the Clié for watching...

Yes, iCal and Address Book sync via iSync.

To install program you still have to use Palm Desktop (since often times just moving the file to the Palm or it's card won't do the trick). But once you figure out where files go, you can use a card reader to put movies, pictures, and so on right on the MemoryStick/CF/Whatever...

I can't wait to add WiFi to my NX70v, but it will have to wait, I took the summer off to come to California, but I am paying rent on a place in NY and here, and haven't really worked at all...

Well, the Clié I works as a Universal remote! I suppose with the right IR to X-10 interface, we COULD control our homes with our Cliés when the Voice recognition and Mac aren't convenient!

We are RIDING THE WAVE, Cheesy my friend, RIDING THE WAVE!

Oh and also, I only say that you might have to wait for a Missing Sync Update because the last update said things like, NOW SUPPORTS THE NX80 and so on, so I just assume they add the support as it comes along...

Ohhh, ok. Sounds good.

I was thinking we could use WiFi or Bluetooth to control X10 stuff, but then we would have to have a host computer and some custom applications and stuff.

Well, with BT I think we would need a custom App, but it would just need to be something to launch Apple Scripts, maybe the guy who did Sony Ericsson clicker is looking for another project...

But with WiFi, you should be able to do it with some fancy Web work... Isn't there an HTTP X-10 Program, you'd need a host, but on a home network, that shouldn't be a big deal...

Sorry guys, to interrupt your private conversation....;)

I am using my NZ quite extensively with WIFI and it is VEEERY power cunsuming (I never leave the house w/o a second battery)... I suggest to wait for the first tests for the UX and its battery performance, even more that there is a huge battery pack you could snap on, which you will probably need!
But I believe that built in WIFI is definitively better...
Form factor and screen size will be another issue one has to decide once you actually see them side by side!

Hope that helps

cheers Nicolas

PS: BTW Markspace are usually quite efficient with updates...

Thanks for the info, I think I'll wait...

Oh yeah, back to the home automation thing. theres a web app called HomeSeer (i think) but its for windows (i think again). I built my own custom web app back in OS 9 using several peices of software:

-Personal Websharing
-an AppleScriptable X10 application, MouseHouse or XTension will work (i think)
-a CGI/Macintosh application called PSA.cgi that lets you run AppleScripts
-a bunch of AppleScripts

I made a password protected webpage that let me control all my lights and stuff, and pretty much anything AppleScriptable. I aslo had two webcams.

It would be awesome if we could do that on a Clie, and I'm sure we could. You could set the temperature, make some coffee, etc etc etc...Or imagine logging in from vacation, checking your security cameras, turning lights on/off, etc etc etc (again)

I'll be majoring in computer science and engineering this fall so maybe I'll make some applications to do this :)

Or more importantly MESSING WITH MY ROOMMATES HEAD WHILE I AM AWAY ON VACATION...

But your ideas were good too ;)

Kidding,

Going to look some stuff up, I'll post in a while...

hmmm.... looks like while the world rushes to get Mac and UX50 working together my poor little NR70V is left in the dust of their passing !
Can't get it to talk with either the Palm desktop or iSync :( - just says "Port in use" on the device. Works fine in WinXP though

now why would it work with newer machines while the "slightly" older ones dont work?

it just doesnt make sense.

NR worked fine with my MAC running OS 9.2.2 (w. Missing sync 2.2.2)
For OS X you will need 3.0.5

So where IS your prob? What system are you running on?
Maybe do a search in clie-mac section...
