I will be in Japan in 2 months and was thinking about buyin the ux50 while there. Does anybody know of any issues with software, graffiti/decuma with English based programs? I have limited japanese language skills, but don't know if it will just be a pain in the butt, or if my use of it will be limited...
I kind of like the idea of having japanese language built in, for ease of use with japanese text proccessors, dictionariess etc..... for student purposes...
thanks in advance

Personally, I haven't seen any compatibility issues from running English Palm programs on a Japanese Clie. I have a friend running a PEG-N600C and haven't heard of any problems. What you need to think about is, will you be happy using a Japanese Clie? All the menus and options will be in Japanese and it will take you a while to get use to it. All the Kanjis and Kanas drives me crazy sometimes. Also, you have to get used to the Japanese input program called ATOK.

I am using the NR70V/J japanese OS, the dictionary is really good and convenient and i guess decuma will be very good for kanji input. but as katsu mentioned, u will need to get use to the input system, esp since there is a tab to switch between roman characers and japanese kana.

Hi!
I am using a Japanese NX60 and did only have minor problems with English applications. They basically work, but sometimes some characters are not displayed correctly. It`s not a big thing and does not happen very often.
Please be prepared to face a Japanese PalmOS. All menus will be in Japanese and you cannot switch it to English. Flashing a Japanese Clie to English is not possible as far as I know. If you can read Katakana and some basic Kanjis, you should be able to understand the basics of the Clie.
Japanese Clies come with a J-E-J dictionary and you can also install some other useful apps that will help you to improve your Japanese language skills. Please check out Jim Breen`s Japanese website for more information http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/japanese.html
I have tested Decuma (J) and have to say that it has good and bad sides. The handwriting recognition is quite good, but some other functions such as shortcuts are not very handy. I am using GoGoPen (from Neoscorp) to enter Japanese characters and it works pretty good. The UI is not as polished as the Decuma one, but I am kind of used to Graffiti and did not yet get used to Decuma. Good luck in Japan.
P.S.: Please check out www.kakaku.com or www.bestgate.net before you purchase the UX50 as you will find the cheapest shops for all kind of electronic equipment on these websites.

Don't worry, the Japanese OS is just same as the origin English OS, but add the Japanese support to it like font and input. So that means it support two languages!
I am using a Japanese NX80V now and I like it more than a English version~
And there is one more thing i have to tell u, the JP ver. got more stuff in the ROM, like in my NX80, Sony added 2 dictionary in rom (E2J and J2E). If u are learning Japanese language this would help. If there is a update, the japanese one always comes out first!

PLease be aware that you won't be able to type accented letters : יטגהס... etc. if you're an english speaker, it's OK, but if you have adresses in europe or an english-german(or french, spanish, danish, etc...) dictionary, all the accented letters will be interpreted as a 2-byte character.

I have used Clie T-600 J ver for years and had no problem to run English
softwares. I mainly use Agendus and I installed English version of it.
Everything works fine with english menus, Clies always appear in Japan
first and it is always cheaper than US version. If you could a little understand
Japanese it is good for you to get J version. I think. :-)

Thanks for all the help... My Japanese is good enough to handle it...
in fact, my first PDA was bought in Japan 9years ago...Sharp Zaurus... there was nothing else out there that could look up kanji by writing them... I bought it exclusively for the dictionary function.. but soon started using everything else (contacts etc...) the battery life sucked though
I can't wait to get the ux 50....I am still using my handspring Visor Deluxe!!!!!!

did you finally register, Unregistered?
I'm also getting a Japanese UX50 and will be translating all (all) the menus here when I do:
http://www.jibjub.com/clie/
bit pissed that I can change the language of my iPod, mobile phone but I cant change the language of my PDA.. that seems... strange...
but anyway, its a good excuse to learn more kanji and you do get the input system installed with it
