Anybody having problems with mysterious scratches showing up on your NX80's? I noticed the other day a scratch in the hinge next to the camera on the inside of the clamshell, now today I noticed a couple of small scratches by the tablet mode buttons and directly across from it in the same spots on the very bottom below the keyboard. I don't abuse mine at all, could it be paint chipping?

I would like to tell you many things about your logo but as I see you have a K13 mind, so when you grow older maybe I'll have another chance

It might be that you had placed it on a surface whereby there are small rough particles around that had scratched it. I belived that your NX80 does not have a leather case to protect it, right? :)

could be possibile with the paint since Sony used a metalic finish on the new NXs. :( Not sure though....

I have this problem too... The scratches just appear mysteriously:(

My NX80 sadly has 2 parts where the paint chipped off... red arrows show where the scratches are, and the blue arrow shows the crevice where I think dirt/sand went into and caused the scratch... However, not really a big deal though, cuz the scratches are like 0.5mm*0.5mm. So small that I have to use the camera's macro mode in order to see it clearly.

To ricleo,

You parts are exactly the same as mine!! Is that a design flaw??

I have the NX case from Sony, and the scratches are not on the outside of the unit when closed, they are on the inside. Under the keyboard, and next to the tablet mode buttons.

hmmm...for your scratches near the tablet mode buttons and under the keyboard, some particle must have gotten inbetween during closed mode to scratch the NX...Hmm...must have been a big particle...coz the rubber stoppers that prevent contact in closed mode are rather thick and effective.

Maybe you guys had a soft knock that u did not know.

Hmmm...definitely no knocks on my NX80. Always in its case, never dropped before..

Aw man...If that ever happens to my NX80, I hope I never see them. Otherwise, I might be tempted to return it...

I notice that you have an NX80, but the color of the device you have pictured is darker than the silver the NX80 has. It looks like the color of the NX73, or gunmetal grey NX70. Is the NX80 available in any color than silver?

I have noticed some marks on the side near the record button on both pieces. I attributed it the fact I carry it in my shirt pocket, and have a pen next to it. But my pen is plastic, and shouldn't cause any marks on the Clie. The marks look like there is something smudged on it, but they don't rub off. Otherwise, I don't have any other marks.

the NX80's "silver" color is darker than the NX70's silver. Kinda wierd. Saw it at circuit city the other day. I prefer the NX80's color!

urmmm...that's the natural colour of the silver NX80. Ask any other NX80 owners and they should be able to vouch for this. The NX80 silver is darker than the NX60/70 and NR70 silver. No other NX80 colours as of yet as far as I know.

I have an NX80, and the pictures you have show a unit that is much darker than the one I have. That is why I asked the question (I forgot to log in). It must be an effect of the flash.

Haha, I see...I would wish that it's really darker? kekeke, will kind of make it special edition. But nah.... its normal.. i didn't use a flash, used my table lamp as lighting. Maybe that's y it appeared darker. The use of a flash will cover up the marks i wanted to be shown :)

definitely not good news. seems like everything they come out with has some type of wide spread problem.

ricleo
07-25-2003, 11:56 AM
widespread problem? don't think so....this should be juzt sand/dust particles causing the scratches...not sony's fault

Richard you're making me think twice now, LOL :D
before I jump for the NX80. :D

I have some relatively big and noticable scratches on the top cover of my NX80 (i.e. the reverse side of the screen). Not huge or really disfiguring, but you can see at least one of them from about 2 ft away. No others anywhere else on the case, which made me wonder if the screen is a different material or paint than the bottom half. Probably not though. I'm guessing I must have put something into the pocket that I carry my NX in at one point. I generally carry it alone, but I think one day at work I put a key in there just for a minute because I didn't have a free hand and it was the most accessible pocket at the time. I didn't actually move around with the key in there, but maybe I didn't realize how little friction it would take to scratch the NX. I also used to put my Wi-fi card in there in its plastic case, but I don't know if the plastic would scratch it.

Anyway, it doesn't really bug me as long as the problem doesn't spread. It builds character ;). And yes, the NX80 is definitely a darker silver. It can be shiny in bright light, but in low light it takes on more of a gray shade.

That's why I have chosen my NX73 instead (in addition that I do not need a better digi cam), after I saw the display one at Fry's. That one looks new in condition overall, except the hair size scratches around the corners and the buttons on the silver surfaces.

Greetings!
I have not experienced any scratches with my own NX80, after approx. a week of use.... but then again I keep mine in a case all the time when not using it, and I'm very careful about not "sliding" it across a table or desk, etc.
I personally REALLY like the color of the NX80, the slightly darker silver look gives it a very classy, stylish, and expensive look to it!
My only complaint about the NX80 case appearance is all the writing on the back of the machine - I mean give me a break! I really don't need to have "1.3 Megapixes", "Clie Personal Entertainment Organizer", "Palm Powered" (Logo), "Magic Gate" (Along WITH the logo), and a large serial number label all competing for space on the back of the unit. Most if this stuff could be printed in the manual instead, leaving a clean, uncluttered back panel. Oh well - I guess it's just my own aesthetic preference - Sony can't please everyone!
Best wishes,
Bawko

I don't know about you guys, but I've always resented the "personal entertainment organizer" emblazoned on the cover (it just occurred to me now that it's not on the top cover of the NX80 -- thank God!). It's like Sony wants to remind us and our acquaintances who may come in contact with our Clies that we spent too much money on a silly machine for our "entertainment" like it's a frickin' Playstation. I think the multimedia features of the Clie make it superior for work as well as play. It always seemed somewhat strange to me that rather than try to appeal to the business as well as personal market, Sony would give their product a name that makes it sound like a toy. I'm sure they could have strung a few different buzzwords together that would have made it sound better.

Haha Eddy, 2 spots on my Clie is putting you off a NX80? Kekeke. I think if u carry it in the nylon pouch all the time, It shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, my NX80 is perfect everywhere else except theose two spots which are so small :) Still love my NX80!

Hmm, it distresses me that it scratches so easily. Is Sony getting cheap on it's finishes?

I was thinking about the exact same thing, is Sony just rushing to get their inventory out to the market, but starting to have the lack of quality? Seems that there were as much minor defective complains back then with the previous models of Clies. Or I could be wrong. Oh well. :(

I would say the paintwork is of the same quality as that of the NR70V, maybe not as hardy as the silver NX70, but at least it doesn't attract dirt like the silver NX70?

Eddy
07-26-2003, 03:22 AM
my gun-metal doesn't attracts dirt neither, becoz of the metalic coating that Sony have used. :D

ricleo
07-26-2003, 04:47 AM
yeah, think that's the diff btw the metallic coating and the silver nx70 matt coating

I liked the smooth feel and coating on the NR70(not necssarily the color) over the NX's, it also has held up much better

Wow. My NX80v is exactly the same way. It went in my pocket alone in closed mode, sometimes with the CF card in the slot, but never anything freely moving around the outside of the unit inside the pocket. The SECOND day I owned it, it had a ton of scratches on the reverse side of the screen. It's most noticeable in a straight line coming down from the center of the unit because there is the little rise in the hinge there, and I also have the scratches on the left side, but none on the right. It's so weird.. anyway, it doesn't bother me too bad, but it's just annoying. Makes it look older.

Wow...I'll never leave my NX80 unprotected in my pocket or bag unless if the pocket is clear of all other stuff! That has been my standard operating procedure since my first Palm M505.

yes they are :) the finishing really feels cheap and my nx80 is losing paint already (especially on the corners). but other than that it's working fine.

Here's a pic of my scratches, if this helps anyone.
As you can see, most of them are along the left (upper in this picture) edge. I've drawn two arrows to indicate other areas with smaller scratches. The lower left corner has a lot more small scratches than just the large ones. The middle area has a lot of very tiny lines that are very hard to see in the pic. The one indicated on the right side is the only noticable one on that side of the Clie.

I have had my NX80 about 1 week after it came out in Singapore.
After reading the thread I looked carefully everywhere: no such scratch.

My only complaint: Picsel viewer is not an universal reader; it is localised. e.g. it does not display correctly european PDF documents.

I use RepliGo, it does a nice job, but it's not a native viewer. It needs desktop PC conversion first and it's not free. Very easy to use though and views many different document types.
