View Full Version : Reason for wide border?

Does anyone know if their is a reason for the wide border around the ux-screen. Is read is could be for the antenna, is that true?

My guess would be smaller screen = cheaper and uses less battery life. Plus there may be some electronics crammed up in there - judging by the capabilities of this tiny thing.
yeah, power consumption could be a main cause for the smaller screen. Also the wireless antennas within could be another reason. Have you taken a look at the plastic mock of the UX50? :)
Hope that eventually they'll make a bigger screen.

To be honest... the "apparant" wasting of screen real estate (given that the NR's, NX's and NZ's all have the same screen size more or less) is what makes the UX's not look that exciting to me.
I've gotten so spoiled by my original NR's size and now my NZ's size that anything smaller just isn't the same... :)

I forgot about the plastic mock. Did it have all the electronics in it? I wonder - if not it might not show what's really around the screen (there's *no* way a wireless antenna is that thick around the screen - that would be ridiculous - look at most PCMCIA card Wifi antennae). I still primarily suspect power drain, and I see cost as a major driver as well - people are upset at how expensive this thing is (I don't really see it given all the functionality that's built-in, but then again this PDA was pretty much designed for me by apparently-telepathic Sony engineers) - adding a ~4" screen is likely to top $800.
From a supply chain perspective, there's always a chance that there are quality or availability concerns - if possibly only given projected demand - hard to say. I do like the little Wifi/BT lights, too bad they couldn't have used the space for more buttons/indicators of some sort (on a future model with portrait, maybe a graffiti area...) heh. Speculation is grand.

Hmm. Is that a view from the back, though?
Edit:
Now I'm looking more closely at this thing, with what I really hope is some robust hardware on the swivel joint, there isn't too much room vertically for the screen. I wonder if there are limitations on widely-available screens with given dimensions, such that this one was just the best fit currently available. If you wanted to go bigger, you'd lose the "underbite" of the jog dial and the 3 application buttons when the unit is closed (tho I'd have preferred that anyway) - not clear if that's a feature or a side effect of the smaller screen, though. :) I haven't had this much fun in a long time...

Nice... So technically there is no reason for a bigger screen in the next version.
To see if it's _too_ small i guess i'll have to wait until it appears in shops.
hausman
07-22-2003, 03:49 PM
Not neccessarily, though - it sort of depends on how you treat the overall size of the unit and the size of the top part of the clamshell. There's certainly some flexibility there, though JackAxe just posted an interesting image on a new thread...once I understand what he did I'm sure it'll be clearer.(thanks JackAxe!) It's likely Sony will tweak it based on reviews/sales/comments, if indeed the design succeeds enough to warrant further development.

looking at the picture, the battery is driving the length of the unit... looks very similar to the one in the ipaq...

I thought the border is for WiFi and bluetooth ?
kitfreak
07-22-2003, 10:40 PM
Just a thought.
I wonder if the border around the screen is there to allow the unit to be held when you have the screen flipped over for non-keyboard use?
If the unit is too wide to be held in your palm like previous Clie's, then the unit could be held in one hand by placing your thumb on the border, with your index finger supporting the back of the unit.

07-22-2003, 10:50 PM
hmmm good point kitfreak.
Then again if Sony had given us Portrait view and hardkey buttons we wouldn't have this problem! >=( Closed, the UX could have been held like a normal NR/NX series, which doesn't have much of a huge border around the screen.
THe border just seems so thick! Sony could have a) made the keyboard smaller to match the smaller screen and have an entirely smaller UX series, or b) sony could have simply just made the screen bigger.
dah. Don't worry guys, you'll have everything you want in the UX60
yeah, I'd definitely upgrade for a new OS6. :D

Even if it has this screen size? and 16 Mb usable?
if everything is accountable. I suppose so... well, surely by then things should be looking better. :D
Crossing my fingers on this though. :p

I read an article. I believe from Brighthand, that mentioned that the wide border is a New Styling cue that Sony is using on many of its Flatscreen productions, including the UX. It is suppose to give these Sony models a Unique look and feel.
Personally, It looks like a waste of space to me, but to each his own.

I personally prefer the new screen. It will make my movies sharper on the display.

I thought that the power consumption of an LCD had much more to do with the total number of pixels and the not the overall size. So a smaller screen at the same resolution would only have marginally better battery performance at best. I may be mistaken.
If it really was just a design choice, it seems pretty stupid.
hausman

I wonder if it relates to backlight - you probably don't need as much power to backlight a screen that's 30% smaller - I have no idea if that's negligible or not, tho.
JackAxe
07-23-2003, 04:42 PM
That's what I've heard, that the backlight consumes the most power.
Someday OLED screens will be the norm and will consume very little power. I can only dream of that day. :)

Sorry, apparently OLED screens are quite some time away:
www.brighthand.com/article/OLED_Screens_Not_Coming_to_Handhelds_Soon
I believe the screen is smaller so the backlight uses less power.
Look on the bright side, I haven't heard any reports of wavy shadows on the screens of UX series models being demoed.
JackAxe
07-23-2003, 05:22 PM
That is why I can only dream about the day they will be mainstream. That article didn't mention the color fading issue.
Oh well. At least LCD screens are getting better. I look forward to a 600+:1 screen on my desk.

Why don`t you take a look at EIZO`s Medical Display Systems. Those monitors have 700cd/m2 and a whopping 1000:1 contrast. Blows everything away, but those displays are quite pricey...

from the pictures that i've seen (look here (http://palmoslove.com/work/feature/news20030717.html) for instance) that's right. There are little speaker holes at that position at the back of the device.

I'm of the opinion that the thick border makes the UX50 less technically advanced than, for example, the NX80. It's also quite similar to my old laptop from 1994!

The first thing I thought when I saw the UX designs was how much it reminded me of my old Sharp Wizards -- Oz730/Oz750 (My first PDAs) --- And they still remind me of that somewhat.

So I'm unable to scale images, huh? Well, with true broadband, I'm not affected as the page still loads instantly. I think you ought to break up with your modem.
How many different scales do you want?

errrr, I am on Yahoo broadband.. perhaps yeah read about it on slashdot..
but penis siz.. I mean, modem speed aside, that image is still way to huge from a layout perspective.
how many scales? just make any image for a board less than 400 pixels wide and I will be fine with it.. I dont need a huge *** picture of your laptop, that is something I have no need of ;)

I'm not sure about why you want to **** with me. Alright, what kind of broadband do you have? DSL is by far not broadband to me, or anyone else for that matter.
Secondly, when I was in a hurry, I didn't have time to scale that pic for your pleasure. And it's not the camera that is the problem, but the user. The camera is an Olympus C740 3.2 megapixel camera and it's not mine. So, you were wrong at least twice up to this point.
And last but not least, I do know how to use photoshop. Just tell me if you need some proof to keep quiet.

if you want to proove your photoshop skills (now that you have some time) why not resize your image? even 500pixels wide would be fine, I am sure I am not the only one whose page layout is being torn apart by it and will continue to be torn apart untill we get to a new page or you resize..

i would imagine that first of all they want a certain screen size (battery price and other issues), and then they have a certain harware size needed to put all the parts. ideally, the two match. sometimes they do not. they are trying to match a certain screen size with a certain case size. in the case, you wind up with a larger border.
