From your mouth to...
The Sony "rep" is a Senior Vice President of Sony IT products, so I think he would know about plans to develop WAN connectivity to allow you to use it as a cell phone. I wish!

I really hate cnet video. They use 2 proprietary video codecs. 1) Realvideo. It costs money just for the player on Mac OS X. 2) Windows media. On mac it is so unsupported that usually it says it is an unsupported codec. WTH?
Why can't it just be ****ing plain old classic compatable with everything mpeg1???

LOL!!! It plays, but the Video and sound don't work? Errm, what else is there to playing? Do you mean the status bar scrolls? This is one of the funnier responses I've seen here in a while.

It played fine on my Windows Media Player 9
That includes sound, graphics, and even the status bar, amazing!
Did anyone catch that the the design will integrated into other Sony Clie products?

Quicktime...tis' a'ight, but mpeg is always the lowest common denomonator.
Although, easy editing in QTpro makes .mov worth it...

Neat interview. If I were the interviewer I would have asked why no CLIE announced to date has more than 16MB of regular-type user accessible internal memory. Sorry, but "internal memory sticks" just don't cut it.

I totally agree. He kind of got confused and he repeated himself a couple of times. I think he also said WAN instead of Wifi which the interviewer then mentioned later in the interview. Somebody needs to brief the VPs on terminology before letting them get interviewed.

It is all sale and marketing talk. :o If any one that have been using Clie for generations (people like us), we know it. In fact, I'm not surprise the VP doesn't even use a Clie.

Okay BimBoy, maybe that wasn't described too well. I guess I pulled a Homer Simpson.

I don't think he was referring to cel phone integration... he mentioned the inclusion of certain WAN type technologies, but I would expect that would be for communications much like a RIM, or to bypass having to BT-link via a cel phone to get on the internet.
Besides it remains to be seen how they could play nicely with the Sony-Ericsson partnership who are in the business of ... cel phones. Granted the SE partnership seems to have cel phones with PDA technology, why not give it to them and offer PDA's with cel phone technology. I know a lot of people (self included) who are waiting for someone to do this right.
Cheers

I had a problem with my video acceleration that caused similar symptoms. Perhaps that's what you're experiencing too. In Windows Media Player, go to Tools - Options, click on the Performance tab, and lower the video acceleration. Try it.

That guy is an ***. Uhhh..ummm....
Someone mentioned earlier that he sounds as if he doesn't know what he's talking about. I agree, too. I might be disappointed if Sony uses this 'Handheld Engine' in all future CLIE models.

How do you define "first-generation hardware"? Sony's been making Clies for years. If every new case type was first-generation hardware, then with models like the NX series and the NZ, you'd be taking the same risk as with the UX.
About the only example of second-generation hardware in regards to a PalmOS PDA is Palm's Tungsten T/T2 and their III series. Sony redesigns every model they release.
Now, if Sony offered extended warranties off their website, I'd be set with getting a UX myself.

by first generation hardware i think he's referring to the handheld engine, and as far as I know this is the first integration of core processor, graphics engine and memory stick controller implemented on a single unit. I for one am looking forward to it's development and use. Since it takes up less space, it should result in smaller handhelds, or handhelds with more room for other features.

Hey, go easy on these two. I don't know the Sony person but Richard from News.com is a great guy. And he's also a print reporter, I don't know why they made him do a video interview.
Second, get a tape recorder and record one of your conversations some time. You'll find you say "umm" plenty of times. And this isn't just a couple of people chatting. There's a huge camera pointed at them, reminding them constantly that thousands of people are going to watch them. And I'll bet you were nervous in Speech class having to talk to just a couple dozen.
I remember reading the results of a poll that showed more people were afraid of public speaking than death.

Yes, it's almost as if they don't want you be able to use your old styluses, cradles, cases, batteries, etc. <duh>Could it be that they want you to be forced to buy all new accessories?</duh>
redesigning means more profit. :D

OK, I must say, the UX did look very attractive in Mr. SonyVP hands. I was watching him closely and try to imagine actually using it in table mode with the Landscape orientation. Unfortunately they did not actually show him do anything on the actually Clie other that pull out the stylus 2 or 3 times. I still say it looks awkward even though it will fit in the palm of your hand nicely. Its probably a good thing that it has that wide border around the screen because thats where your thumb will be holding the clie in place.

Also, As a Sony VP there is no way this guy is going to reveal anything without him having info to back it up. If the guy says that they "might" be looking into WAN and Cell network integration. BELIEVE IT.... Sony is probably looking into it. Unfortunately think of all the prototypes of technology Sony has looked into that never made it to market.
My dream Clie would have GSM/GPRS capability, as well as 802.11b. So that I could surf the Web on my Home WI/FI network, while ordering a Pizza. : )

Yes I agree but I think Sony didn't hire someone who is very knowledgeable, confident, and have a true passion for their products. The Sony rep sounds like he never used a CLIE before.

I think he is probably hinting at using the cellphone networks (which is what he said) not putting a phone in the clie.
I think this service will be similar to the wireless AirH internet service currently avaliable (and popular) in Japan.
Who needs a phone in a handheld? there are too many networks to support properly.
one day everything will merge but yeah, something that can conect to a nationwide cell phone network INTERNET service is a good move.

"it will fit in the palm of your hand nicely"
This struck me too. The video shows that you could hold the device in one hand and use the stylus with the other, just like almost every other pda out there. That's no small feat for a landscape oriented device.

I have to admit that the look of the unit improved -- I liked the two thumb typing action -- the larger keys might be better for some people. Although there would be times a FULL sized keyboard would be needed and it makes me wonder whether we would ever see one that would work here...
