interestingly, sonicstage actually doesn't support MS Pro in the mean time. don't know what the ppl at sony's thinking.

and of coz there's no upgrade patch available yet.

The memory stick Pro does NOT support ATRAC3 on the Clie. It states so on the package and in several spots on Sony's web site, Sorry!

don't be upset, if you got MS Pro, you don't really need ATRAC3 coz you got heaps of storage volume to use. :)

and
Larry, i thought it is Sonic Stage's problem...?

All I know is that Sony says the MS Pro is not compatible with the ATRAC3 proprietary music format on the Clie. As far as I know, Sony hasn't given an explaination. Sony had to do some voodoo with the MS Pro so that it could be used on the Clie, so I suspect there wass no room to support copy right protection, having only a ten pin connection.

shouldn't be the case, as far as i know all memory stick pro have magicgate capability.

i just think it's some software stuff that sony haven't yet been able to solve yet. it isn't only the CLIE, ATRAC3 is not supported even on the new VAIO memory stick pro slots....

Ummmm......
Maybe I'm missing something here, but WHY in the name of everything that is good and holy, would ANYONE want to use ATRAC3 for music on a memory stick? Let me get this straight.... You have to use a crap Sony application to CONVERT (I.E. Lose Quality) your MP3's to a PROPRIETARY, DRM CRIPPLED, NON-STANDARD audio format so that you can..... let's see..... transfer it to your CLIE through a piece of software with a $#!T user interface (But ONLY if you FIRST buy a DIFFERENT type of memory stick, something called "Magic Gate", which costs MORE than the standard type). The only magic "gate" here is the one your money flies through on it's way to Sony for the "privilege" of using their proprietary crippled audio format!

Guys, I just don't get it. Why not do what the rest of the SANE world does, and just copy some MP3 files to the folder on ANY type or size of memory stick? Is it so hard? Seems to me that it is actually TONS easier, takes less time, and there is no interim file format conversion, associated quality loss, and crappy software to deal with!

Just my opinion.... maybe I am missing something here...
Best regards,
Bawko

Very good question! I don't disagree and you have worded it so succinctly :)!

i agree with you atomic chicken ..

what on earth with sony .. why we need to do so many useless steps to listen my mp3 from my computer without ms reader ..

why not just drag and drop as ppc ?

Neogin,
You don't actually require an MS reader to do this, Sony supplies software with their CLIE's that turn the handheld itself into a MS reader/writer that works as a drive letter through windows... you can just drag and drop files like you are talking about. It works through the normal USB hotsync cable. I don't remember what the software is called on the Sony install disk, as I personally bought a MS reader for use with my camera a few months ago and use it now... but I do know it is there and I have used it before. Works fine!

Very good question. The only answer I have ever heard is that ATRAC3 saves you a little space. I think like 10-25%. Not worth the hassle IMO.

Intersesting all the replies backwards and forwards with different opinions on what is best to do, however the important thing is that, as has been said, I can transfer mp3 files very happily across to my magicgate memory stick, but, my point is a Piece of Sony Software is NOT compatable with a piece of Sony hardware that should have no compatability problems between them, or if they do as is the case this should be rectified.

Obviously this is only an opinion and I am sorry to have created such a heated debate.

Have a nice day...

Yeah, I don't know WTF Sony is smokin.

They create so many proprietary formats that are incompatible with each other.

Memory Stick Pro's still cost twice as much as CF cards. Damn you, Sony!

I bent over and bought a 512 Memory Stick Pro for $205. Gotta have some MP3's

ATRAC3? No thanks.
