I am in the backorder listing at SonyStyle for a SJ30 and currently have a Treo 90. What is involved in the migration from the Treo (or other Palm) to the SJ30? Is the Desktop the same or different with the Clie?
Also, is there a listing anywhere that shows compatible software?
I have a memory stick and an USB reader. Is it normally better to sync or load software via the memory stick?
Thanks in advance Clie mavens.

Firstly, the expense app and the notepad aren't availabe on the clie. Secondly, the special address book is incompatible with palm's normal address book. And yes, you will have to use sony's desktop software.
And lastly: I usually use msimport because when I use the reader it "freaks out" a little before it can read the MS normally.

I just got a SJ20 and imported my data (meaning datebook, address book, memo pad and to-do list) from my old visor deluxe without too much trouble. I did not try to transfer over my applications (not that many really) and felt it was safer to just reinstall the applications separately. I first uninstalled my old palm desktop and then created a folder into which I would install the Sony desktop. I created folder "c:\program files\sony handheld" which happens to be the default destination on the Clie installation CD. I copied my user folder from my old handspring files to the c:\program files\sony handheld folder. This is the folder with your user name and contains all the data for the included applications (ie date book, address, etc.). I think this also includes "expenses" which is not a Sony application.
Then install the Sony desktop from the CD. When you install it, it will "see" your old user folder and ask you if you want to use that or create a new user. I told it to use my existing user. After installation is complete, you will hotsync the data to your SJ30. All my data transferred over perfectly.
Just to let you know I first unsuccessfully tried to install new Sony Desktop to my old Handspring folder (after unintalling old palm desktop) thinking that it would transfer over all data and apps. When I did it my SJ20 eventually froze and I had to hard reset it to get it to work again. I called Sony tech support who was there when I needed it. I am pleased with their support although I am not sure some of the stuff they told me was totally correct. I think that possibly when you unintall old desktop it leaves behind some incompatible pieces in the folder so their suggestion to install Sony desktop to brand new folder seems logical. In any event it worked and I am pleased with my results.
Still playing around with my new toy. Certainly has lots more space than old visor.

Thanks rrayl... this is really helpful. I am still waiting for the SJ30 but have downloaded some of my registered applications to make sure I have the latest versions. Your info will save me a lot of time.
I liked everything about the Treo except for the lack of an external keyboard to input data in mass. The screen was bright and I quickly mastered thumbboard. I have notice that Sony is coming out with a Treo like device in the T Series. Thanks again.

Lynn,
I hope you have as easy a time as I did other than my first attempt to install it in old directory. Let me know how you make out after you get your new SJ30. I will be envious of your color screen.

Well Ray it worked. I had some registry problems on the PC but that was another story. I finally decided to download the 4.1 desktop from Palm and installed in the Sony Handheld directory and it worked like a top. Again, the problem was not with the Sony SW but with my PC.
Again, thanks.
