View Full Version : and I was hoping for a smartphone

I so hoped this would be their first PalmOS / Clie SmartPhone. The SE P800 is kinda lame (it's very good, but the UI is not in the league of PalmOS) and I'd hate to abandon Sonys design in favour of the simply functional Treo 600.

I'd either love an all-in-one PDA/Phone that actually excels at both (rather than a good phone, average PDA or a good PDA, average phone) or a bluetooth based hub that I can swap small phone, PDA, camera components and share a headset....

Oh well... there's plenty of other letters left for Sony model numbers ;)

I too was hoping that by a new 'wireless' device, we would see a SmartPhone announcement. But, deep down, I knew that CLIE division would never be allowed to tread on Sony Ericsson's toes; the latter has received a lot of funding and committed to that partnership, and introducing a CLIE smartphone would be like creating a major competitor in an already low-margin segment.

And with this disappointment, I've just bought a P800 and my CLIE is going on eBay.

I agree that the P800's UI is about 50% as intuitive, or functional, as the Palm OS. I also agree that the software range is a joke in comparison.

However, I want an all-in-one device. Right here, right now. The Treo line is old. Whilst I wouldn't want to get into PPC - and suffer even greater troubles than I will with the P800.

The Treo 600 looks very interesting indeed. But that will still be a couple of months away. By which time, the P900 will be released (from the leaked pictures, it looks awsome).

Ultimately, I'm tired of carrying around my CLIE and T68i. I don't want the baggage. I just want one device that I can slip into my pocket. One device that does email, SMS, MMS and let's me do simple calender and address book checks.

The UX series looks compelling, and I may buy it as my next CLIE, once they hit the UK in 2-4 months time if by that time I've found a super small, super battery phone (e.g. the the Siemens SL55 is getting there!)

I'll post a proper farewell in a few days time :)

Thanks
