View Full Version : Position of the jog dial on the UX series

I don't think the position of the jog dial is good on the UX. If I'm holding it in one hand and I'm trying to read something on it, the position of the jog dial isn't feasible to scroll with one hand. With the other Clie's, you can use your thumb to use the jog dial. I'm surprised they didn't put it on the side of the unit like the other Clie's.

it would be nice it if was on the top left CORNER, so you can use your holding thumb to scroll :)

it seems to me that they're prepping the hardware for an upgrade to let it switch between portrait and landscape. (when they re-release it as the UX-60) with slightly more memory and camera pixels) if you hold it in portrait mode, the jog dial's in the same place as the old jog dial, except instead of scrolling along the length of the clie, you scroll the wheel across it's thickness.

It looks to me like there are two scroll wheels. One on the left and one on the bottom.

Still, I hate trying to read ebooks with a scroll wheel. Either I end up scrolling line-by-line, or it's set to scroll one page per click and I press to hard, skipping several pages. :(

I think from all the pictures i've see there is only on jog dial, to me anyways. Horrible placement of jog dial... blah

It's a great place for the scroll wheel, when it's placed on a flat surface, just like my Sony VAIO laptop. If users want a one handed device look elseware. Funny, it seems like every one has to finds all these things wrong so that they won't want to get one. It was intended as a communications device with a few extra goodies thrown in. That means you can down at your favorite Starbucks scrolling the screen, reading your email and drinking your coffee. You get a nice compact unit with what looks like a nice keyboard and a display to angle it for best viewing. It's not intended as a game machine, it was intended as a business tool that can fold up and put in your pocket or purse. For the typical college student, it's probably not for them. It doesn't make it bad, and it's not a one size fits all. If you look at the unit as an email or web tool, then it makes perfect sense.

I agree with Larry. Try resting an NX flat on a table -now try to reach for the jogdial with your thumb... ;)

(lefties should an easier time with this exercise though ;))

What are you all talking bout, i think the placement is fine. I see that we are not going to be holding the UX models with our thumbs, but with our index fingers, your going to use your thumb to type and scroll so in my opinnon, placement of thumb well is perfect.

yup, a two handed operation. call them "hands" helds now :).

as to trips to Starbucks, my friends would be real thrilled if I spent our time together cruising the net. Guess it will give the loners something to do. Of course, you might be able to use it as a pick-up magnet.

I sort of see your point but I don't you'll be able to hold it with 2 fingers in order to be able to reach the jog dial with your thumb. I guess I'll reserve my judgement until I actually hold it.

no comment, just have to wait for the unit to be seen in person. :D

I use my pda to read documents and ebooks, so the jog dial, or navigator wheel on my Tungsten, is very useful to me for going to the next page. I usually read with one hand, so the jog wheel on this UX is not nearly as convenient. I understand that when the UX is laid flat, or one is using two hands, it can work well, but for one-handed use it is more difficult. I guess the ultimate solution, as someone else mentioned, is to be able to rotate the image, in which case the jog wheel will be on the left side in portrait mode. This way those who like using flat, or with two hands, and those who like using with one hand, will both be able to rotate the screen to suit their preference for jog wheel placement.

I do agree that the Jog-dial on the UX50 isn't so convient, but then with the Landscape, give & take I guess. :p

I find that I keep trying to use the camera as the scroll wheel...

I rather find the power button to be quite awkward to use. :p

Yeah, the UX50 power button isn't great, but it's an improvement over the NZ90's. (Own UX50, NZ90, NX70). I just user ZLauncher to turn off power and one of the app buttons to turn on.

One more opinion in the mix...

As for the power button, it's a BIG improvement over the NZ90! Actually I find it to work pretty well, and the lock feature built in to the same button works quite well indeed.

The scroll wheel is another topic altogether. I like having one in it's current position but would like to see another placed to the immediate right of the camera lens so when it's held in one hand (the left) my thumb could scroll naturally. I too find myself wanting to use the camera lens as a scroll wheel quite often.

The next iteration of the the UX will most likely have both portrait and landscape options as well as an enhanced (read larger) screen, bumped up memory and processor, and possibly increased camera resolution.

This is by far the most capable and useful PDA I've ever encountered (for my needs)!

It's thin and compact dimensions and built in connectivity have really scored a home run for me. I now use it in conjunction with a SE T610 and my 17" Powerbook to make for the ultimate mobile office treo! If Sony continues to make substantial improvements in this line, I'll keep buying them.

DREAM: Oh if they would only come out with a model that incorporates a Tri-Band GSM phone I could fade into Digital Heaven!

OH YEAH... one last request Sony, PLEEEEASE build in MAC Support! There are LOT'S of Apple users that use Clie's and no doubt more in the wings if only Mac's were supported out of the box.

Have a Clie Day! :p

Guys, try TiBR Pro from inDev Software. It's a ebook/text (yes, with .txt extension, the real txt file) reader with rotating function. You can turn it into any orientation you want. Then you will see why the jog dial was put there.
