I read somewhere that for using the MP3 playback capabilities a magic gate ms must be used... I'm currently thinking about of buying a NX but if I can't play MP3 with a regular ms would be a bad thing...
maybe someone could clarify this issue to me

You can play MP3's on a regular memory stick. You need the Magic Gate's for ATRAC3 format.

who would want to use the ATRAC3 format anyway... having mp3's available all over the internet?

I use both. I really like the Sonic Stage program that Sony gives you. It easily imports mp3s and does a really nice job of organizing your music.
But, I also have a couple of cheap Lexar and Sandisk sticks. If you copy MP3s to the MSAudio folder, they work great.
The only thing you can't do is have 1 stick with both formats.

i use both MS, i transfer files the different way, not using the sonic stage, from my CD(compiled MP3's), i transfer MP3 to my SONY memory stick reader.
