View Full Version : Bold prediction: UX Battery life is gonna be the worst of all Clies.

The evidence:
1. WiFi and Bluetooth.
- Oh crap.
2. Out of the gate, comes available with battery expansion add on.
- Not exactly confidence instilling move regarding battery life there.
3. Has built in Flash backup!
- They expect that we'll drain the battery all the way down so often that they provided expensive flash memory built into the unit to back up our crap from the get go!
I think I'll go with NX80, thankyouverymuch! :p

16Hrs of continuous MP3 playback without external powerpack, I want to ask what sort of machine ever released in the market has THIS much juice to squeeze...?

But then, Sony created it's own low power, adapting processor. It adjusts voltage based on use. This is probably the main reason why they decided to create their own, because of too much power drain with the current available processors.

Then I wouldn't watch too much MPEG 4 videos. MPEG4 playback consumes 270mW, opposed to 1.7mW at idle according to Sony!

16 hours would kick arse!!!
I think it will do pretty good since SONY dropped Intel as the chip maker.:D
And since this CPU has a true DSP, no more slow down from music playback. =)

multimedia-stuffs will probably go thru the DSP. that will enable lower power consumption, when compared to using non-purpose-specific CPUs.

But then if it can let you watch MPEG4 videos at 30fps, it would be tempting! :D
Sony can solve this problem if they sell the battery accessories really cheap, then everyone will have 3 spare batteries. ;)

You don't need to predict battery life, most everything we need to know is there-
14 days Sony rating- compares well with other CLIE's
2.5 hours Wi-Fi full backlight, 4.5 hours low backlight- much better than most other PDA's except Tungsten C
Mp3 16 hours- better than even SJ33
Where do you get the impression that battery life is poor?

I get the impression from this quote and link directly from and to InfoSync
"Sony has also beefed up the battery to power all of the PEG-UX50's new features, but acknowledges that it may still drain rather quickly"

It always gets confusing when there are credible info from two different trustworthy sources. Guess we'll have to wait for real people to start using them.

Right, we'll have to wait and see what the real world will bring.

Where do you get the impression that battery life is poor? Where are people getting this "14 days of battery life" from? Sonystyle lists 9 days for the UX50 and UX40

IMHO, I think the battery backup is an extra feature that I know I have been clammoring for when I play music when I travel or hook up to WiFi. I like the fact that I can surf while at Schloskey's for more than 2.5 hours. Give me the extra juice for when I need it and for when I travel (oh, and for when I play games, too!)
I am exited, but really want to know if I can use JackFlash to access some of that extra memory (103 Meg's) that is use for Video and Back-up.

Those were the supposedly translated specs from yesterday. I'm guessing that some Japanese site had the wrong figure, since numbers shouldn't be hard to translate!
If the actual Sony spec is 9 days, then the battery life will indeed be questionable. The T665 has a Sony spec of 10 days, so this is very worrying! The actual numbers themselves are not very useful, but it is useful to compare with other CLIE's.
Thanks for clarifying, that changes things a lot!

Yes, it says nine days on the Sony site :(

I seen it as great and but, unfotunately necessary feature.
I don't want to be tied down to having to carry extra batteries everywhere I go and the batteries, how much are they anyway?

Did anyone say you had too:cool:?
You have the NX80, so that shouldn't be a problem, no?
With the UX50 xtra battery attached, then it would feel like the NZ90, big and heavy :D!

You have the NX80, so that shouldn't be a problem, no? I do and I'm very satisfied with, but I'm always looking for the next best thing and baby this isn't, at least not for me. Now I'm just explaining why.
With the UX50 xtra battery attached, then it would feel like the NZ90, big and heavy :D! I know! And not very pocketable for me. What about you?
Now Larry, would you answer one of my questions please? :)
What is the price of the extra battery? I can't seem to locate it?

I think the add on battery is $119.00 or so, as an accessory, but don't hold me to it.
PS: I meant, no one said you had to carry an extra battery, I got things out of order there, sorry!

Can someone post a link to where the 9 day battery life is stated? I saw it before, now I can't find it.
It doesn't seem to make sense. The T665 has a reported 10 day battery life, and only lasts for 5 or 6 hours at low backlight (I believe.)
Yet the UX50 is supposed to last 4.5 hours with continuous Wi-Fi at low backlight. Wi-Fi is a power hog, so the battery life of the UX has to be better if it can last nearly as long with Wi-Fi on continuously.

The add-on a battery is just a nice option to have, like a folding fullsize keyboard. I don't use my keyboard a lot, but I need it sometimes.

For those who like to use their Clie on a table to type on, I think will love it. Imagine sitting at McDonalds, eating your favorite Happy Meal with the UX on the table scrolling through your emails. I'd be lost without my scroll wheel, even on the desktop. Trouble is, the desktop won't fit in my pocket.
If it moves around, then add a battery pack for ballast...

Larry, as I know you have probably pre-ordered yours (even if there's not a way to do it now-I know you would find a way :) ) or then again maybe not with os6 just around the corner.
I have some buds who really this unit, but their main concern is an os6 unit popping up in a 3 or 4 months.
I say get what you want or need now, because like we all know, there's always something new around the corner, especially with sony!
