Is it just me or does the screen on the UX50 look a lot smaller than the screen on the NX80v?

If only that was the actual list price in the US, we'll see tomorrow I guess. If it's $600 I may very well buy it at launch. Even then it's tough knowing you can buy a nice slim notebook on EBay for less...

Actualy... it does look smaller... but then again... OMG.. Maybe sony made... Proprietary Pixels!!! :(

The screen is smaller. That worries me a bit, since single-pixel wide characters are already kind of hard to read, that's why ThinFontFix and font substitution programs are so popular. Now the pixels will be even smaller (if only a bit).

We'll have to see it with our own eyes though, maybe it will actually appear about the same anyway. Also, if screen contrast is improved then that may make up for it in terms of legibility.

I'm disappointed that they reduce the size of the screen so much. 3.2" diagonal down from 3.8" is a MAJOR reduction, I don't care HOW small the pixels are. Looks like they were worried about power usage, because they certainly have the width in this beast to have used the stock screen...

...exactly.

It's NOT a PDA so much as it's a Blackberry killer. Certainly not the TG or NZ replacement some speculated... I was one of those who thought it would be, but not yet anyway...

you could also get a decent color tv for the same price. or a dishwasher, or a new refrigerator. (I just bought a new house, so am price checking)

You do not really want to compare it with Blackberry, don`t you...
Blackberry is a really ugly device... Fits to T-Mobile.

If SONY would add mobile phone capabilities and BT headsets could be used, then the UX50 would everything else away.

Dude, what the hell are you talking about? UX is nothing like the BBerry. Does it connect from anywhere to your Email server? No. You have to go to a hotspot if you want to do that.

Wifi =/ GPRS radio or whatever's the hell's in Black Berry that allows it to connect from anywhere to email.

Let's not confuse the issue. UX is just another WIfi enabled Palm OS PDA, no matter what the hell it looks like.

Although UX50 Looks very nice and slick, but it's a no way blackberry killer. Why? because UX50 only supports Bluetooth and Wifi, while Blackberry is already enabled with wireless connection with your cell phone service. That's a major difference.. neverless I am going to buy the UX50, I really careless about how good the NX80V camera is, since when you do video capture, it's still limited to 160x112 which really make it the same as any NX Series camera. the only advantage is the still capture mode.

Just my 2cents

For those of us with Bluetooth/GPRS phones there is probably little difference. I have a TG-50 now and as long as my T68i phone is in the same room as me (which is pretty often) I can retrieve my mail at the touch of a key (well, two touches of the same key, actually)...

I imagine most Blackberry users are carrying a mobile phone as well, so what's the diff? (I've never used a BB, so I can't really judge)

I have purchased snappermail which is able to check mail automatically at regular intervals and alert me whenever there's something new.

My only disappointment with the TG-50 is the fact that I can't really get used to the keyboard (coming from clam-style pda's like the HP200 LX and the Nokia 9xxx series). The UX looks like it might be much better in that department, especially with dedicated numeric keys.

The camera, Wifi and USB features also look very nice.

Regards,
X.

It think Sony is trying to make a viable laptop replacement over anything else. For most tasks (word processing, email, PIM functions) a laptop running Win2k or XP is overkill; 4lbs or more, poor battery life ~3-4hrs, large form factor.

The UX-50 could make a viable alternative for corporate/enterprise users to do word processing, fillable forms/surveys, access corporate databases, email, etc all wirelessly, even on the road. Wifi hotspots are getting more and more common in hotels, airports, McDonalds and Starbucks, or you could pair it with a 2G or 3G BT phone for remote access. All in a form factor that is pocketable, light and has a battery life 3-4 times or more of a laptop.

Using apps such as WordSmith, QuickOffice, Repligo, I'm in Touch, PalmVNC, GotoMyPC, etc will give PDA users the power and functionality recently reserved to desktops and laptops. Heck, I just upgraded Repligo wirelessly via the web on my NX70V without ever having to touch my desktop.

Been wondering about those who have stated many times they would never go back to smaller screen. Will settle just to have the new gadget?

As far as screen res goes I would not consider anything lower than 320x480 ever since I had my NR.

With the UX screen being slightly smaller in size but still able to show everything my NZ shows on screen at one time I am fine with the size.

Just curious - what make/model is this camera shown with the ux50? Do I see it connected via bluetooth?

I think it's a Sony DC77 or something.
I've seen it in shops.

It can be connected via bluetooth to a TG50 (which comes with software). Apparently the UX has the same option.

I believe it was more about the square screen than the actual size.

Much thanks!! I just found one on ebay for $499. Now I've just GOT to have the UX50 so as not to break the Sony marketing karma.

My karma just ran into a camera. . .
