PDA

View Full Version : It's no longer a "Palm"

The original idea behind the Palm Pilot was to be able to hold it in the palm of your hand. What I like about the traditional vertical PDA design is that I can operate it by using the buttons and jog dial on the side of the PDA with one hand while holding it in my palm. With NR/NX series I can even use the entire keyboard while holding the PDA with one hand and using the thumb of that hand.

UX series requires to use both hands to be able to use it efficiently because the buttons and jog dial are in a wiered position to be used with one hand and the keyboard is quite wide.

For this reason I do not really like the new horizontal design.

It's different, but each form factor will have its positives and negatives. That's why we have everything from regular Palm to TG50 to Tungsten to Blackberry to clamshell PocketPCs to this one.

I can see how some may be disappointed, but most all of us knew this was going to be a landscape orientation. If you don't like it, it seems the existing NX models or TG50 already fit the bill!

Not to mention several Palm and PPC products.

Sony really seems to enjoy doing totally new things with Palm OS.

I think this is a good design.

I too like it. My BRO lugs around his laptop, I carry along my SLEEK NX ;)

BTW, I like the DISTINCT design... not PERFECT but definitely an upgrade option...

You can't blame Sony for trying out new things. Remember, their boldness saved the Palm OS.

I think the design ist very interesting for people using Psion-PDAs who think about switching to PalmOS.

Its better than the Pocket PC where one device just looks like a repackage of another.

This device is very cool and if I didn't already know it was going to be so expensive I would get one.

It really is the replacement for a laptop. It's not a replacement for th NX series.

What bugs me is that the European NX73 with a wifi card is essentially the same as this UX50.

It is starting to get too complicated. I'll stick with my simple TG50 since I mostly bought it for writing papers, internet, and playing games.

Notice how this new device doesn't have either launcher buttons or scroll buttons? It only has a jog and 3 not-real launcher buttons.

No kidding....

Microsoft has the PPC OS locked so tight and the requirements set so that every PPC handheld is a virtual copy of the next...

I am still trying to wrap my head around the new design...It is unique, but the screen seems smaller....looks like those ugly organizers.

Yeah, too bad the screen wasn't the same size as the other HiRes+ CLIE's...

Yeah, I still don't get that one. The pixels on the NX screens are small enough already. It couldn't be to save battery life. And there's enough room on the flip cover to place the same screen on it. I don't get it.

(am very happy for Sony though, they really push Palm forward where no man has gone before)

The form factor is definitly a departure from the norm, But i don't think this is a bad thing. sony has lead the way to inovate the Palm Platform and this is just one more step. do i think it will be a smash hit? not likely but it will have it's users and like anything it will have those who love it and those who hate it. I for one and very happy with my NX60 but i will check out the the 50 see whats what with it. but i won't bash it or dissmiss it out of hand without first seeing it and holding it in my hands. oh and from the looks of it i would say sony figured people would type with it useing there thumbs not holding it in 1 hand and pecking with a finger, used like that the layout looks to be effective. but this is just one mans opinion.

No your right, but I like it, because I can set it down on a flat surface and enjoy it. My laptop is no Palm either :D. I guess it boils down to this, if you want a Palm, get a Palm, if you want a Sony, get a Sony... ;)

I wonder if I'm going to have to dump my GPS connection cables and purchase another charger cable to use in the car or at work? It would be neat if you could add acessories via the USB port.

I think the new desing is worth to try it, but by looking at the pictures looks to my taste that the NX desing is still the king of the PDAs

Good points. I may yet remain with Sony... now I have to determine if the new Tungsten T2 coming out tomorrow (32 Meg's of RAM, 400 Mhz processor, and OS 5.2) or the post August 9th release of the PEG-UX50 will the the PDA for me.

The one thing that Sony has... big screen and lots of good stuff.

The pro for the Tungsten is the 26 usuable Meg's of Ram, faster processor.

What to do... what to do???

For the first time I tried AvantGo for Palm OS 5.

I was able to do the following:

1. Scroll
2. Advance page up and down
3. Select a link and open it
4. Go back to the previous page

- all with just a jog dial and the back button.

It as awesome as I was standing in a crowded subway car and having two hands operate my palm was practically impossible. With UX series having the jog dial and back button at the bottom of the unit I don't think it would be as convenient...
