View Full Version : upgrading to the registered backupbuddyVFS

Hey all... I've got a question about upgrading to the registered version of backupbuddyVFS (or just plain BBVFS) from the free version.

I downloaded the free version to test out on my NR70V and decided that I liked it and went ahead and purchased the full version. So I installed it and began a hotsync, but the splash window saying I've got 'X' days until my trial version expires keeps coming up.

I thought maybe I *really* didn't install the new version since the old version's .prc file name is 'BackupBuddyVFS' and the new registered version name is 'BackupBuddyVFSReg'. I *expected* the new name to show up on my NR70 but it doesn't... all I see is the old name.

I even removed all that I could find (I couldn't easily remove the 'backup' folder on my memory stick w/o using msimport and deleting it from the PC... so I left that alone) and then re-installed the registered version and *still* it looks like the old one again once installed and I see the splash trial message when I hotsync.

I fired off a email to support@bluenomad.com but have yet to hear anything (don't know how quick they are on responding).

This sound famaliar to anybody?

Thanks in advance,

-chris

Make sure that you delete BBVFS from both RAM and the memory stick. Also delete your backups and start fresh. BBVFS is finicky about this.
Let us know.

Or get JBBackup instead. It's a MUCH better program for backups to MS.

Shrink... I did that. I deleted everything that I could see. But answer me this - on yours (and I'm assuming that you have the registered version of BBVFS) is the .prc file name you see installed called 'BackupBuddyVFSReg' or just plain 'BackupBuddy'?

If yours says the registered version, then I would definitely think that's where my problem lies. But at this point I've got nothing to point me in any direction.

Wish those bluenomad folks would reply back to my email! I'd be happy if I at least got a 'we have received your email and a response will be coming shortly' type of response.

Well that sounds like it confirms my thoughts... I *still* don't have the registered version installed and that's what's causing the you're-trial-version-has-X-days-left window popping up on my PC.

What I *didn't* do yet is remove all instances of the backupbuddy software from my PC too... since when I ran the .exe file that I got from downloading the trial version it put some stuff on my PC. Maybe whacking all that (and the stuff on the NR too one more time) and re-installing will do it.

But if that *is* it, it's kinda annoying that there's nothing to instruct you on upgrading in the documentation.

That new product you mentioned tbellas does look cool... but since I just spent the $$ on backupbuddy, I at least need to use it for a while before I spend more money. :)

Thanks all...

I actually bought BBVFS and had problems using it with MSMount(I wish I had read their web site about this before I bought it, maybe similar problem with PiDirect). Now use Card Backup, which is a great backup program. I do still use Windows Backup Buddy, so all my investment wasn't lost.

cjones, try to uninstall BBVFS and wipe out everything related to it in MS, RAM, and your PC (.prc and even the .exe), restart your PC and download the registered version again from their site. I did it and it worked for me.

sebring, I use PidirectII with BBVFS w/o any problem even with the encryption on. You just need to be sure that PiDirectII is disabled before letting BBVFS backing up the RAM to MS.

Ok DanT. I did all that. I *think* that all along I've had the registered version on the palm and it was the Windows piece (just plain 'BackupBuddy') that was still in trial mode.

In my head I was combining the two as one package. I think that what I did was first install the trial version of BackupBuddy which is *just* for windows. Then I must have later installed the free version of BBVFS. Somewhere along the way I got the two combined when in reality they're two separate products.

All the time I had successfully gotten the registered version of BBVFS on my clie taken care of... but because I still had the trial version of BackupBuddy for Windows on my PC whining at me with the days counting down I got confused.

I just went back to see where I downloaded the original BackupBuddy for Windows and can see that it's not the same as the BBVFS.

I'm such a dork.... :) Oh well, live and learn!

I read the BackupMan v.1.1 ad in PalmGear. It does not seem to have the encryption (or does it?), which is a must have for RAM backup to MS. Without encryption, I might as well use MSBackup, which is free. Just image you leave your Tungsten T somewhere. Someone gets a hold of it, he can bypass the security by hard reset the system and do a restore from its SD card, unless the SD card has no RAM backup files.

Can BackupMan selectively backup some files?  What do you do if some apps are not compatible with it.  I found QuickSheet has problem with BBVFS, but I can simply uncheck it from the backup list.
