Well, in my case, there is no suitable VPN software available for the wireless network I am on. All I can think of is to "piggy-back" on someone else's connection (laptop, etc.) via bluetooth.

The Sony Ericsson T68 seems to be a popular cell that has Bluetooth. I belive Nokia also has a least one handset with it. Not sure about the other manufactures.
Bluetooth maxes out at around 700k (or is it K?) so it faster than the connection you will get over the celluar network.

Bluetooth isn't just for internet connections. They have bluetooth headphones, appliances, stereos, ect... Bluetooth is gonna pave a way to be able to wirelessly connect and control anything within a distance.

I used to use it on my palm m505 and T68 for surfing the web. it worked well. its so much easier being able to access my phone in its pocket rather than lining up infrared.
range wasn't too bad either. i never had trouble setting it up and found it easy to use and get going on a daily basis.

the flashing blue light is also cool

I have Bluetooth on my T68i and Apple Powerbook, but I doubt that I will get a Bluetooth Memorystick for my Clie as it will be a feature I will look for in my next PDA (maybe an NZ).

In the case of my T68i and Powerbook, the inclusion of Bluetooth has been an excellent feature. When I get an SMS on my phone, for instance, the message pops up on my computer screen where I can reply. I can write an SMS from the Addressbook and even dial the phone from there. When the phone rings, a message pops up on my computer screen asking me if I want to answer it, send an SMS, or send it to voicemail. Very cool! It is also possible to surf the web via GPRS, though I haven't enabled this feature as it will max out my current service plan.

I would love to have this sort of functionality on my PDA. It is far easier to compose e-mails or SMS on a PDA than it is through the T9 interface many phones use.

Also, with Bluetooth it is possible to sync the PDA with the computer without using a cradle. I presently use iSync to synchronize my contacts between the Clie, the phone, the computer, and my .mac account.

Bluetooth has been a long time coming but I'm glad that they are getting it right.

Another benefit will be the use of Bluetooth GPS receivers!! This is what I'll be looking for in the next year or two. Well, the receivers are out, it's the clie I'm waiting for. Yes, NZ has bluetooth, but it so big that it won't fit in my pda mount for my car!! Which means it's just a bit TOO big. So here's to hoping that the feature set (probably minus the camera) can fit into more of an NR,NX sized model...

Is there any other phone in the US besides the Sony T68i that uses bluetooth?

I dont like the sony phone, I like more flip phones like the LG 510 seris.

Bluetooth flip phone from Motorola: http://commerce.motorola.com/consumer/QWhtml/m_v600.html expected 3Q2003. It's quad-band GSM/GPRS so it's not clear which carrier will have it. If you buy it unlocked, should be able to work with TMobile, Cingular, or AT&T mMode without any problems.

Well wouldn't you say that's because the U.S. is just beginning to embrace GSM? CDMA and TDMA ruled the states for a very long time...ugh, I still remember the days of CDPD <shiver> -- though, I think there are some disadvantages to GSM. Mainly, there aren't nearly as many towers built as CDMA -- Verizon and traditional TDMA AT&T service are much more consistent (especially in rural areas) than GSM -- and once I leave big cities like Atlanta or New York City, GPRS fades even faster. Hopefully the 3g phones will be ushered in with network upgrades.

Another good phone with bluetooth capability is the Philips fisio 825. I just bought it myself and for 239 Euro it's a lot of phone for the money:D
(Bluetooth, 4096 Colors 112x112 pixels display, GPRS, Java, etc... )

Is J2ME all it's cracked up to be? Have you found any J2ME applications that can leverage bluetooth to interact with your clie?

I've worked with J2EE a lot, and it's kind of like a phrase someone used on here a while ago - a jack of all trades, master of none. It's not exactly robust, not fast at all, and doesn't offer any system-level integration. I guess it's a good step away from M$ Windows for cell phones or whatever they call it. I'd rather use someone slow and not as colorful than be a consumer whore ;) well I kind of am anyway but that's beside the point.

Is that phone 65k colors?

I've played a little with my Philips fisio 825 today.
Syncing with my PC via bluetooth worked after .. 2 hours of trying.
While the features of the phone are quite impressive for the price, there seems to be no software available for this phone besides what came with it. I'm a little dissapointed....

@superfly: The display is capable of 4096 colors

Therein lies your problem! Get a mac with bluetooth and you won't need any additional software :p

I have a Sony Ericsson T68i cell phone and my desktop system has bluetooth. This allows me to sync my phone's contacts and appointments via bluetooth with my Palm desktop software. It is quite handy. From what I have read about the NZ90, it will also be possible to sync your NZ90 with the Palm desktop software via bluetooth as long as your desktop system has bluetooth. The hotsync cradle and a USB port will not be required.

Another cool feature will be the ability to write SMS messages on my Palm and then send them to my phone via bluetooth to be sent to the recipient.

All very cool stuff and this is just the beginning.

Normally i would agree that my windoze computer is to blame for most of the hassles with new hardware, but this time he wasn't.
Actually the software on my phone seems to have some bugs.
At first i wasnt able to pair the two devices and one bluetooth related icon was simply missing.
After the phone crashed ( I think i navigated too fast through the menus... strange ), i switched it back on and there was my missing icon and pairing worked perfectly.
Now i'm hoping for an update to the firmware cause i found two other bugs.
The calendar week display doesn't show any entrys until i push exit, then they appear for a moment.
After recharging the phone i had to switch it on for like 20 times. After 3 seconds or so it just switched off again.
I'm thinking of exchanging it for another model with bluetooth. After all the firmware still seems to need some fixing before i would like to try it again

That's an awesome phone. I hope SE decides to make one for the US market.
