how much of the 16mb memory is taken up when you start the sj20/30 for the first time? (with OS, other programs)
also, how much space do the rest of the programs take?

Most Palm OS programs are small, and the 15MB available user memory is more than enough to hold most programs. If you do run out of room you can always get a 32MB Memory Stick or larger to hold programs on.

I use the 2/3 rule when putting programs into ram. If you have 8 mb, leave about 2.5 free. If you have 15, leave 5 free. That way it never feels cluttered.

yeah and the device feels a little faster when there's ample space available in your ram.

Most Palm programs might be small, but not all databases are. I use the Noah Lite dictionary program with the full database (5 MB). Unfortunately, Noah Lite doesn't let you put the d-base on the Memory Stick. But, I found this program called MSMount that makes the handheld think that certain files on the MS are on the Palm. So, my Noah Lite runs the database off of the Memory Stick. Granted, it runs kinda slow, but I don't mind. Just a tip on keeping some free space on your Palm.

I agree with the two-thirds rule on my computer, but as a novice clie user, how do you know how much you're using?

There are some program can show you that. I have Launcher X, so the memory status is always showing on the top. Or you can just click MS Gate, you can see the free memory left on builtin memory and MS both.

Also, if you don't use a launcher you can select the menu then delete and it'll show you (graphically as well) how much ram you have.
