View Full Version : No buttons in Tablet Mode? What do YOU do??

The only real UI detractor on my NX70 is the lack of hardware buttons for the main apps while in tablet mode. I see the NZ has corrected this somewhat with little buttons.

I really miss these guys as the main palm apps are the ones I use the most and its frustrating having to manually swim thru the launcher to the right app and launch from there.

How do others handle this? What do you guys do to get around this?

Go download a copy of OKey, and then turn on the Scroll Up/Down option (actually, I use all 3 options, but the one this thread is about can be covered by the Scroll Up/Down option). This will add up and down arrows to your status bar, and it also makes the following locations launch that apps you have associated with the hardware buttons:

Battery icon - DateBook button
Left third of clock section - Address button
Middle third of clock section - Todo button
Right third of clock section - Memo button

I use Skinmanager to replace the bottom bar with one that has buttons for the main apps and then use Pagedown Hack (req. tealmaster or another hackmaster) to map the apps to the areas of the buttons.
Works pretty good, only non hires apps won't show the bar (tapping the locations wil still work) and some apps sometimes take over the entire screen (AcidImage, ...).

I use McPhling and just map of all the hard buttons along with my fave apps into a pop-up menu that gets activated when I push the Back button. It's quite handy. You can also customize it to activate when you press the little silkscreen menu on the bottom.

On the NX, I use Tealmaster and JogPage Hack to quickly scroll ZLauncher via the Jog Wheel. OKey works like ridunn states, and possibly Pagedown Hack as vmax has suggested.

You can download several status bars from cliesource that add icons for the "hidden" OKey areas so that you can easily launch hard button apps while in tablet mode.

Am I the only one who lifts the screen up about 15 degrees above the keyboard and presses the hard button I want. This takes half a second.

I'm lucky enough to have groomed myself not to rely on them (hardly ever used them on older models) :)

I'd reckon the hacks mentioned above would serve your purpose well...

There is a program, that will let u use the remote's buttons as the hardware buttons.

Also when you use pageDownHack, or Okey I have found that I can get over 16 app's to choose from...
I have HBX which will generate a window that will allow you to set up to 4 app's per hard buttons...
Or when you use Okey, pageDownHack the bottom of the bar...
It works great...
Here is the PalmGear address to HBX:

hmmm, all my apps that are associated with the 4 buttons above the keyboard are listed under my "main" tab in z launcher. I simply turn on my device and scroll down using the scroll wheel then press it in and it goes to my app, all 1 handed too. Then if i wanna check an assignement after i check my mail i just hit the back button (still 1 handed) and then scroll to due yesterday and press in the scroll wheel and there yah go. I only have 12 apps in my my "main" tab so i never have to literally scroll down a page, just move the scroll wheel down till the right app is highlighted. No Hacks at all! I just use the hardware features that are native to the clie... am i the only one that does it this easily?

Enjoy.

I just started using Okey. On my way to getting TealMaster, I can't wait to have my hacks back!

Somas1,

Looks like just me and you. Do it all the time - tip up screen for a sec. and press. No hassle, no bother for me. (and you!)

that doesn't work on my NR, I have to lift the screen at least 30 degrees before the buttons/keyb activates. At first I thought my keyboard was defective but it is definately the opening angle of the screen.
The Sony clam design has sensors everywhere, camera rotation, screen rotation, opening angle ... what's next stylus insertion sensor :)

If you're using the default Clie launcher, you can place these applications and any others you like in the "Clie Favorites" group on the left hand side of the screen.

Just tap on the Clie logo at the top left, then tap "Edit Favorite Applications" and make your selections. With the Graffiti area up, there is room for 6 icons in the Favorites group; with the Griffiti area hidden, there is room for 12 icons.

I never use the buttons, with Okey and JogPage Hack on my NX it's all I need.

I do it to!

Plus if it's out long enough for me to use the open mode I am not using those 4 apps.

This has been a great thread.

Frankly, I'm impressed with the original question. I just migrated from a T615C to a NX60, and figured I was stuck with having to flip the screen back and forth.

The solutions listed here are unique, creative, and OUGHT to motivate Sony towards a bit more UI research.

Same here... I rarely used them other than for games on my other Palms, but when I want to use them I just flip the screen up a scrap and press the desired button. For hard-button gaming I just push the screen all the way up and hold the unit... the thickness of the CF slot actually makes it very comfy :)!

I use McPhling, but not in the typical way: To activate, I map the "Capture" button, you know, the button that starts up the Camera app? Go into McPhling and under Activation, uncheck the "swipe" box and check the "Buttons/keyboard" box. Next, from the drop-down, select "Custom" and when it prompts you to press a key, press the Capture button. I keep the "Back" setting disabled. Then, configure McPhling to include the camera apps on the favorites list along with any other favorites. From ANYWHERE, I just press the Capture button and I get a list of my favorite/most used apps. Pressing it again dismisses the list.

The only down side is that you now have to tap the "Capture" button ththe screen to actually take a picture with the camera. Small price to pay.

I do that most of the time. I love to remind people around me that the thing isn't just one part. Kinda keep them on tha' toes. I mean, to the ill-informed.. I'm sitting there reading, then I flip the screen up and press one of many hidden buttons! Whoa! And, isn't that half of the fun of the NR/NX?

Excellent tip!!! I have an NX60 and I never use the voice record app. I mapped the Voice record button with McPhling, and it works like a charm!!

For me the main attraction in the hardware buttons is the ability to press just once and be able to switch on my NX and be instantly in the app I need. All at one go. Okey does not allow that. It is still great for switching apps once the unit is on, though.

Jbarr, You have solved one of the main problems I have with my NX70V, it turning on by accident, and staying on in Clie Camera if the capture button is accidently pushed! I remapped the capture button to activate McPhlin (Coll Idea by itself!) and now if it accidently turns on, it turns off two minutes later! If the camera was acivated, it does not seem to turn off! Thanks!

If you activate the hold switch your capture button will not have any effect when pushed accidentally. On the other hand, you need to move two switches when you want to switch on your NX...

Anyone tried mapping McPhling to launch when you press the power button as well? Every time you turn on the unit, the menu is always there. Well, there's a lot of downsides to this idea..forget I even mentioned it! :)
