I just bought and installed the AmbiCom modem and downloaded Pelaca driver but still cannot make it to work. NX is recognizing the card but I don't see the On light from the modem ON. It started dialing my isp but at the end will show up a message that could not find the modem. Any thoughts..........

THanks.

CF Modem Installation Instructions
Hello all,

I have been requested by our favorite Brazilian, Pelaca, to put together a step by step instruction set on getting a CF modem to properly function in an NX. Here goes.....

1. Obtain an NX (preferably via legal means)

2. Obtain a compatible modem. I use the AmbiCom which I purchased at Best Buy (click here)

3. Install the attached files contained on the two following posts. The first file (cfutils.zip) contains the Japanese version of the modem drivers. The second file (cfutilityen.zip) contains the modified English language file that Pelaca has spent many hours on.

4. After installation, perform a Soft Reset of your NX by pressing the small button on the back of your unit.

5. Locate and execute the new program "CF Utility" in your launcher (hint: the icon has a picture of a hammer & screwdriver)

6. Insert your new modem into the CF slot on your device. The screen should read:

Brand: CF
Product: 56K Modem JATE

7. Return to your launcher and run your system PREFS utility. Select "Network" in the dropdown menu (upper right).

8. Within Network Preferences tap the dropdown menu next to Service and select the top entry (AT&T). Next, tap the dropdown menu next to Connection and select "Edit Connections".

9. Within "Available Connections" select "New"

10. Within "Edit Connection" replace the name "Custom" with the name of your modem (i.e. AmbiCom, or maybe Pete). Set "Connect to:" to "Modem". Set "Via" to the top setting of "Analog Modem (gibberish)". Tap "Ok" then tap "Done"

11. Now you are back at the "Network Preferences" screen. Replace the service name to your ISP name. Enter your ISP info under "User Name", "Password" & "Phone #". Under the "Connection" setting, select the modem name you entered in step 10 (should be the bottom choice).

12. Connect telephone line (analog) and tap "Connect"

Simple eh?

From: Pelaca
You have to install... the "CFUtilityen.prc" then the "CFNULLinf.prc", "CFmodeminf.prc" and "CFmodemvdrv.prc"...
In the "cfutilityen.zip" you can found the needed files...
The TDK, KAGA, Billionton are supported by Sony but the Princeton and Ambicom works too...
I'm working on the Xircom now with no success for now...

I am having the same troubles as "fnm" above.
New AmbiCom, just like fnm, above.

No "on" LED is seen.
The modem makes two tries, and offers the following error message:
ERROR: MODEM NOT FOUND (0x1106)

What are we doing wrong..?

2 Questions
1) In step one (above) did You select the correct modem type when installing, using the utility?...chose ONLY the Ambicom.

2) Did the NX beep when you inserted it into the CF slot?

Yes, the beep is very important!!!

I have a Pretec from the PPC days, works great, now that I have a driver for it!

Special Thanks got to Pelaca and Networker!!!

On question #2, first... (The easy one) Yes, I hear the BEEP shortly after I insert the CF modem into my Clie.

To question #1, above; Yes, this was the KEY! In NETWORK, I had NOT selected the "CF Modem" as the CONNECTION. (By default, it was set as "modem," or similar. -From the PREFERENCES/CONNECTION menu, I had set things up as using the CF Modem, I had assumed, you see.)

I have my PREFERENCES/NETWORK set to even use an AT&T calling card! This works well!!!

My settings (to assist others to use their calling card) is as follows:
-This is assuming that you have the CF Modem installed...
-This is assuming that you have the PREFERENCES/NETWORK set correctly...
-In PREFERENCES/NETWORK...
-Tap the PHONE number-box
-In the top line, place the AT&T access 800-number
-Add TWO "commas" (,) right after the AT&T access number
-Check the USE CALLING CARD box
-Enter your calling card's PIN NUMBER (in the "Use Calling card" window), followed by one COMMA, and then the actual local access number of your ISP

There may be some adjustment of the number of COMMAS that will be needed, due to differences of companies. (A comma adds a delay of a couple seconds per each comma.)

So far, this works by using the AT&T calling card, but I cannot access the non-long distance (local) number for the ISP. This is simply a local error on my part, which I will look into in two days.

THANK YOU (!!) for your assistance/reminder!

My desire; I'd like to have two 'setups' (profiles?) so that I can simply select to use the calling card, or to use two different local access numbers, as I go to and from work. Is this possible? (-I'd like one "Profile" for the 507 calling area, one from the 612 calling area, and one for use with the now-functioning AT&T calling card.)
