View Full Version : cannot turn on Clie nx70v-anyone else?

Hi guys!
Am I the only one who has this problem? After taking a couple of photos (or making a couple of short, 30-second movies) my Clie nx70v just dies.
In other words, after taking the pictures I turn the Clie off, and when (minutes or hours later) I want to turn it on again, nothing happens, the power light does not come on, the screen is dark and blank.
Recharging and a soft reset solves the problem except that the soft reset is actually a hard reset since all my data are wiped out and I have to restore everything from my computer.
It may seem like the problem is a depleted battery except that it was at 100 % before taking the pictures, and the picture taking itself did not take more than a few minutes (literally 2-3 minutes).
I guess the question is: is it normal for the battery to go down so quickly? did anyone else experience anything like this?
any other ideas why this is happening?
please let me know before I call Sony support
TIA!
Dee

Definitely it's NOT normal...
Something similar happened to me yesterday (without the hard reset). I don't know if this is a known problem, Í didn't read anything similar untill now.
When I got my clie working again, the clie camera app was active with a 'clie multimedia blah blah error' It was weird.
Also Agendus keeps turning on the led when I snooze a meeting, so I thought it was a combination between Agendus and Clie Camera.
Let's see some other forum members opinions...
Saludos!

It sounds like the battery has seen it's day.

Batteries can go bad. You lost your data because the battery went dead. Yes, it's possible to see 100%, and have it die a short time later. Additionally, the Clie won't turn on until the battery voltage reaches a certain level.

Thanks for replying, Avega and Larry!
If my battery is dead, that's really bad news, because my Clie is almost brand new (bought in April, and not used heavily since)!
could it be that Sony uses substandard batteries!?
also, when I recharge, the Clie works, so it is not clear how the battery can be dead and also working at the same time? ;-)
do you guys know if there is a way to check if a battery is defective?
another thing that might be a clue: ever since I got the Clie in April, the orange recharging light comes on (and stays on for 15-20 minutes or more) EVERY TIME I put the Clie on the cradle, EVEN IF it was charged up to 100% just a little while earlier and EVEN IF the battery indicator shows 100% -- have you experienced this? (Try it! When it's fully charged, put it on the cradle and see if the orange light comes on or not?)
Do you think this means the battery was defective from the beginning?
also, it's not a replacable battery, so if I have to buy a new one and put it in, that would void my warranty... :-(( or maybe Sony would replace it ??

Sony had a lot of issues with the NZ90 batteries. The quickest way to kill a battery is from lack of use. Just like us humans, we need exercise.

I have no way of knowing that at the moment.

The battery is working, it sounds like it doesn't have any capacity anymore.

How long does it last after charging? 2.5 to 5.0 hours? Unless there is an app keeping your Clie turned on, then it has to be the battery, especially from lack of use.

That's pretty much normal. The battery has very sophisticated protection against over charging. Again lack of use can kill a battery.

If it's still under warranty and it sounds like it is, they have Sony replace it. Call Sony first and they can send you a box to ship it back to them. I don't remember if the battery is covered or not, but you can ask them first. Yes the battery can be replaced by some, depending on how handy one is and remember to observe static discharge handling of sensitive componets.
Yes, opening up the Clie can void the warranty.

Putting a new battery in will not void your warranty. It’s in the manual and it shows you how to do it.

Larry,
a couple of basic questions:
what constitutes lack of use? -- 5-30 minutes a day, sometimes a couple of hours a day, with an occasional few days of no activity at all: is that lack of use? (that's roughly how I have been using it since April)
I tend to keep the Clie on the cradle whenever I am at home (which is all night and often several hours a day): is this the right thing to do?
(Originally I figured I'd have no battery problems because I'd just recharge every night and that should be more than enough for one day's use--which was quite true until this problem I had of the Clie suddenly just not turning on)
How do you test how long the battery works? I don't have the time to play with the Clie continuously for 2-3-4 hours just to find this out. In Prefs it looks like one cannot turn off the Auto-off, which I guess should enable us to keep the Clie turned on indefinitely. I don't know which app would keep the Clie "awake"?
(A note of real gratitude to you: I browsed these forums and I saw several EXCELLENT and extremely helpful posts by you. Let me tell you for many of us your posts are a real godsend! Thank you so much! And keep sharing the wealth!)

Well then I wouldn't consider that lack of use. Only if it was put away for months and not used at all.

Yes, it is, the internal circuitry should protect it from over charge!

Things can fail, no matter how well you take care of it, unless you have something else that's draining it, here again that's possible too, but not common.

You would have to be observant. Here again it's just a possibility. Yes it's possible to test the battery, but the average person does not have that equipment. There is a an app called BatteryGraph v1.20 that was written by a ClieSource member that may help track usage.

Sony may best be able to guide you, as it doesn't hurt to ask questions. I couldn't find in the warranty any reference to the battery as being covered or not.
The manual shows only how to remove the battery by law for recycling in the event you decide to dispose of the Clie in the trash. The side door has a regular small phillips head screw to remove the battey. Installing a new through the same little door would be difficult at best, I know I have tried it.
The best way is to remove the back cover and it has special 5 point screws securing it. Opening the main back cover will void the warranty if scratches or whatever is detected. The waranty expressly forbids attempted repairs by any unauthorized person or service.

I just one of many here to help :)
