... and I have to pay for it!
Problem is that I'm currently in Hong Kong, and the unit was purchased in North America, so the warranty is only valid in North America.
The touchscreen is not working properly and the unit is doing some weird things by itself (opening random programs).
I have to pay $900HKD service charge plus whatever parts cost there is! If they have to replace the LCD it's going to be $2000 HKD!
Being the "travelling" tool that the Clie is, you'd think they'd have worldwide warranty

I have to agree. If you purchased the device and you are out of the country on business or whatever they should cover it. Sony may be covering themselves from international customers buying US models (cost difference?). But still if you can prove you live here (US) then they should cover you.

:D $2000 BingoBux (HKD) doesn't that equate to about $12 US. :D Yes, I'm being a jackass.
There's a reason Sony has you register the serial number of the unit. They should be able to track it from that. Corner them with it!

$2000 HKD is equal to $256 USD...

I'm aware of that. I remember using more "descriptive" terms than BingoBux though. :D Seriously. If the serial number was registered through the US, what difference does it make if he's in Hong Kong? They should be able to easily trace the serial. Especially if he provides his registration info.

Does Sony outsource their warranty support differently in each part of the world?

At least they are being consistent. They stink everywhere.

Did you send it back to the US or is someone in HK working on it?

Thanks for the offers for shipping the Clie back and forth :) I actually have friends at home that could help me with this but it would take far too long and the headache of communication isn't worth it.
Right now it's with Sony Hong Kong and the technicians are looking at it.
But if the total goes beyond $2000 HKD it's definitely going back to the States...
Yep, it sucks not having a universal warranty. I think the reason is that sony can make heaps of money out of us (being non-US ppl). To give you an idea a brand new NX70V costs the equiv of US$721 and a 665C costs equiv US$450, and thats not including GST (extra 10%). I think sony in non US/Japan countries have a deal that they charge ridiculous amounts so the main sony get the profits, and because the warranties are only valid in the purchaced country people cant get them at the proper price by importing. Damn you sony, we want universal warranties.
Ah, sorry, too much ranting, so did you get you clie fixed (and how much)?

I just sent it in yesterday, it's going to be a week before I get even a call on it's status.

How much would that equate to in US Dollars?

$2000HKD / 7.8 for US dollars.
Good news, I got my NX back today. Seems like a cable was just loose inside the screen, which caused the touch functionality to be funked up.
Anyhow I gave the service receipt to my dad so that he could pick it up for me (my 16 hour work days don't allow me to do much else). He went ape**** when they said that the service charge would be $900 HKD for a 2 week old Sony product. Made a big fuss about how ridiculous it was to have to service a brand new product, and charge an arm and a leg for it.
Said he would write a letter to Sony Japan and ask if it was reasonable to have to pay so much to repair a brand new unit. He also gave the customer service manager flak for not having international warranties for a product like the Clie (seriously, this item is not something that stays home on your coffee table).
The manager backed down to $300, but my dad wouldn't let it go. Said $300HKD or $30000HKD, it didn't matter, it was a matter of principle, and no company should ever charge for servicing a brand new unit that was 2 weeks old.
In the end they gave up, wrote it off and got it for free...

Thumbs up, superdx! I wouldn't back down either... I've had crud like that happen to me, and have had charges written off by pressing, too. It's both ludicrous and a matter of principle to me.
