This is a totally newbie question...

but is there a way to turn off the camera's sound?

I think I tried muting the system, but the Camera still makes the "i'm taking a picture" sound. =\

Thanks in advance!

Wellll, on my NX70V, Sliding all the sliders down to lowest(off) will NOT mute the sound, but checking the mute box in the same control panel DOES work. (this may only work by accident)

But there may never be an intentional shutter sound mute.....
see this article from Wired News: Camera Phones Incite Bad Behavior (http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,59582,00.html)

Same question asked a couple of days ago, but we are here to help each other. There's no way to turn off the sound, the only way is to mute the clie in the sound control panel.

Otherwise, setting the shutter sound to the lowest level is very quiet.

If you need more, as someone suggested, put your finger over the speaker and the job is done.

You can change the shutter sound to "Sound 2" or "Sound 3". At least they aren't as loud and they don't sound like a camera shutter.

Inthe other thread someone mentioned a possible Japanese legal issue with Sony requiring sound. If that were the case, would you be able to mute it?

Surprising that nobody's written a hack to disable the camera sound.

I actually approached the guys who developed Fun Cam about doing just that...

This article is kind of related (but to camera phones, which don't have nearly the resolution as the NZ90 or NX80):
http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/6268446.htm

The last paragraph reads:
"Japan's camera phones are designed to set off an electronic ring when the shutter is pressed, warning everyone nearby that a photograph is being taken. But the alarm can be muffled by placing a hand or piece of cloth over the speakers, police say."

I hate the annoying sounds from electornic devices (I keep my phone on vibrate and turn off sounds on my PC and PDA) but in this case I can understand the need for the sound unfortunately. I can think of a couple of ways that a hack could be written to do this (or a patch) but I wouldn't do it for fear that it would be used in some way to injure someone. I keep mine on sound 2 which is relatively unassuming but still lets people know a picture has been taken. I actually can't think of many good reasons that the sound should be disabled but I can think of a lot of bad ones espeically after reading ClichePasse's article (or the article he linked anyway).

Oh yea... it's not that I'm gonna do bad things... well... ok there is the occassional "hey that waitress is cute" thing and I'd want to take a quick snap shot of her face... but mostly it's for my art classes... instead of xeroxing slides to make flash cards, I can just take snap shots and add notes to them in the Clie's Photo Album! I did that for my final and it worked great! and save me a lot of money from having to xerox slides and such.

Thanks for the input!

Seems to me you could just make a sound file that is silent, rename it to the same as the sound file you are using and drop it in ram. Seems to me the file priority is Ram>Rom>Flash. But this would be too simple, wouldn't it?

One way to put camera in stealth mode:

Do not go to Camera Preferences or Clie Preferences.
Use Sound Icon on screen bar (small icons lowest part of the screen)
Press Sound Icon and select MUTE

No more sounds!!!

It works with Fun Cam too (multiple Pictures and Movies with clamshell closed)
