View Full Version : Another Low Blow For The Nz!
As I mentioned before that my wife is a rep for Hp/Compaq and she deals with Best Buy atleast 2-3 times a week. She spoke with the Regional Manager for Best Buy and He said that Best Buy will NOT carry the NZ 90! Wow! I asked a friend of mine who works for Best Buy and he said that the NZ was too expensive for their buyers. Man, this will hurt the sales of the NZ! You pretty much can say that Curcuit City will follow suit, since Besy Buy is their biggest competition. If you don't believe me, go to your nearest Best Buy and you'll see. I hope it isn't true, I love Best Buy's service plan.

I can't say that I see CC NOT carrying the NZ, especially if BBY decides that they won't. After all, carrying it will give them that much more traffic. It might be expensive to some people, but not everybody. CC will love go get the traffic I'm sure.
Besides, what's to say that BBY won't carry it on their website? They put alot on their that they usually don't carry in the stores. I'm having a hard time comprehending that they wouldn't carry it entirely.

I agree with Littlesix...they have other hardware that costs more then $1000..it all depneds....but since they ahve carried their other lines I dont see why they wotn maybe only online.

I can't see this as being a big deal...especially in today's retail environment with online retailers and such. If you've never heard of an nz90 up until now what are the chances that you're going to pick one up on your next trip to BB, CC, etc..

Bingo - if you're buying one it's because you know it's out there and you want it. The chances of it being an impulse purchase are slim to none. I have a hard time believing that a retailer would negate a total buyers segment with that basis. In this economy? They're scarfing up every possible buyer they can. Realistically, I CAN see them buying damn few of them at the onset and then judging future purchases based on how the initial shipments move.
The negative responses on here are hardly an indicator of prospective buyers; the demographics on here are totally skewed.

The wow factor when it's setting on the shelf, I think, will cause more impulse buys.
I can't believe that the big electronics retailers won't carry this, esp. Circuit City. Best Buy, with there screwed to the counter PDA display, I find more believable, but still seems silly on their part.... I hate shopping there anyway. The criminal bag check on your way out annoys me to no end.
I hope someone stocks it on the shelve. I wanna play with it before I buy it!!!!

Something tells me that I will be able to buy an NZ90 at Best Buy sometime in February.
Most retailers buy on credit, so I don't see a single reason for them not to stock the NZ. "Too expensive?"

Your story is very believable and I have no reason to doubt you or think that you are lying, but being too expensive for their buyers seems too simple of an answer. Granted, that is a summarization of their reason, I still don't buy it (so to speak :p ).
There must be a market for it, or else I am sure Sony wouldn't make it. And out of any national chain, Best Buy is the most likely to reach that segment of the market.
I am not upset at you or think that you are telling tales. I just think, at some point, Best Buy will carry it. I think they would carry this over some other expensive items, such as large plasma TVs. But I guess that there is a large enough market for them, too. Great items, but I'm sure they don't sell too many that often.

True - they carry televisions that cost 7 grand and you don't see them flying out of the store. Yet - they still carry them.

Yes they will, my local BestBuy store (In Framingham/MA.. give a call to check it for yourselves) is not getting any shipment of the NX70 anymore. Guess why ?? "There's a new clie coming out late next month" said the eletronics manager at my store. I gave him all the details and I gave him this page so he can take a "look" at the NZ90.
But maybe he was referring to the Sj33 (he doesn't know anything about it). But that's not likely, because it wasn't "oficially" released here in the U.S.
Well that's all.

If you are getting an NZ you are getting a BMW/Mercedes type of item. Doesn't make you an upper class person, but it definitely puts you in a smaller class of people that would purchase something like that. Whoever posted the PC world/magazine article could see that it is considered a technological wonder, but we realize not everybody wants one. Sort of like the Beemer. The NZ will never be the #1 selling Clie line, not because it isn't technologically superior, it's too expensive. That is why the Palm Zire has done so well. Like a car, do you want something that gets you from point A to B, do you want a street performance vehicle, SUV or a pick-up?
I wouldn't be surprised either way if the NZ is on display. Correct me if I am wrong, but alot of the electronic stores are very choosy with high-end (HE) gear. The BBs and CCs are car showrooms. They show what they think they think they can sell or pay on the inventory they can't move and they are stuck with. I have noticed that they rarely carry HE gear. For all of you techies, do they carry the best stereo equipment, digital still and video cameras, or computers? I am sure you would agree that they don't. Also, have any of you ever sat and listened to customers in those stores ask about pdas? I know all of you have played "stump the punk" with the employees because all of us sit in here and argue the minutiae of every detail of the clie. The regular customer goes to BB and CC and argues and whines because he should have waited for the newest model HP 5455 or whatever, for the built in bluetooth and then 20 minutes later is asking what is bluetooth? The classic is the "what is the laser beam" uh you mean IR beam sir, this isn't Star Wars it won'tburn your retinas out. Better yet, if the world was so informed this place would be overloaded with members. Maybe that is something good?
Either way, if it isn't in the store it will be on-line. Heck, I am getting mine from Amazon.

Nice. I didn't think anyone of this regions was here on ClieSource. We are only one town away LOL. I went to BestBuy yesterday to get my new 6.1 Speakers and I started talking with the guy over the PDAs/Cellphones...
He couldn't tell me when exacly it comes out, but said probably 5 or 7 days after the sony release date.
But it doesn't matter to me, because I'm all setup with Circuit City to make an upgrade. The NATICK store wouldn't do it, so I called others and found out that at at least 3 stores I can do the exchange paying the extra $200.00

Hey guys! Sudbury, MA here ;)
This is soooooo silly! Who cares if Bestn Buy won't carry it! If you going to buy it, buy it! You guys act like I said you can't buy the NZ any where! LOL! I was just sharing with you guys the imformation that I heard. I spoke to a friend I know that works for Sony and it's TRUE! Best Buy doesn't feel that the NZ 90 will sale because of the price. Of course Best Buy sales items that cost more than $800! Duh! But in the PDA department that was a little too expensive. Plus the margin of profit is too slim for them to take a chance on it! My wife will check today with her friend who works for Best Buy's purchasing dept.
LITTLESIX, relax you WILL be able to buy a NZ!
Thank God Best Buy isn't the only electronic store, I'd be dead right now.

The problem lies with those of us who bought devices from BestBuy with an extended warranty. If you want to upgrade (like I was told I could when I purchased the warranty), and the device isn't there, you're stuck. Doesn't matter for me because I'm not upgrading, but I could see people getting upset that want to.

come on, what do you mean they won't carry it... That seems sooooooo ridiculous, they sell $5,000.00 dollar TV's, cameras from $99-$2000, why wouldn't they sell an $800 entertainment device, especially if they sold the NX at $600 and it probably sold very well.
I can't believe this is true...

You know it might not be in all areas, but I am sure Best Buy will have it at least online, and some select stores.
At least the stores that sold tons of NX it will.
So maji maybe your in the area that has not sold a lot and that is why they are not carrying in stores
Also you said your wife is an hp/compaq rep, maybe Best Buy did not or was anot allow to say to a comptetitor.

Sorry, not true at all. My wife and the regional manager for Best Buy have a great relationship. As a matter of fact, he and his wife watched the Super Bowl over our house. You can see why I'm bias to Best Buy. He tells us everything! As far as certain stores carrying the NZ, not true. Best Buy doesn't franchise, what one store has, the other one has. Hey, I hope some how they work this out, because me and my wife have the extended warrantys on the NX.

Evidently the major electronics store chains (Best Buy, CC, etc) are becoming much more savy about their buying and stocking practices. Yes, they do sell items costing $100's or $1000 more, but that's the thing, they do SELL them. Take laptops. Some of them may cost over $2000, but try to find a Tablet PC (the ones by HP and Toshiba are basicaly upscale laptops but, so far, neither BB or CC is carrying them. Managers I've spoken with say they only appeal to very few buyers. Maybe not, but I had to order mine via mail order.

If they get it, they get it. If they don't, they don't. It's not an argument. Either way, it won't bother me. I just figured if they carry the NX at $600, Plasma TVs at 6,000-10,000, and top of the line Pocket PCs (not sure of prices), why wouldn't they? I understand that they sell items for much more money, but, as stated earlier, Plasma TVs are VERY expensive and do not seem to be a great selling item, but they still carry them.

That not true if you look at Best Buy Online, they even say certain items might only be in certain stores.
So whatever region you are in, might not be slated for it.
But i live in the NYC area, and I highly doubt they will let compusa and cirucit city get this and they stay way, especially since I know the NX was selling like crazy at the best buy on 23rd and 6th ave

Kinda preemptive to decide you CAN"t sell an item before it's even out. For all anyone knows these babies may sell like hotcakes/flapjacks/waffles/Egos...... I would think that'd be a 60 prduct cycle kind of decision...

Best Buy's been known to be a bit odd when it comes to stocking things in-store as opposed to online. Just last week i went in to buy a Linksys wireless access point router for my room. Would have preferred to get the new 802.11g ones, but they sell them _solely_ online. Since I needed one asap, i just picked up a b version and left the store. They likely have some similarly mysterious reasoning behind the NZ90 decision for various stores.

I still don't believe it. With HP's and the NX selling in the high $500 to mid $600 range it seems so silly that they think people wouldn't spend an extra $150-200. Anyway you can find the NZ online for low $700's (http://www.pcnation.com/asp/details.asp?affid=302&item=602485) at sites like this one.
It's all about supply and demand, people demanded the NX for $600 and HP's for $650, I don't think Best Buy would say that $650 is the limit, and $800 is too high for people to spend, but who am I to know these things...only time will tell.

Just remember that the people who start and run these big chains didn't make their money by letting someone else dictate how they run their businesses. Yes $200 is not a lot to add to the price for us to buy but mutiply that by several thousand and you could see profit margins dip way down.
These guys are probabaly at least a smart as we are (Duh? Yep, yep, yep). And we have a rather sizeable contingent saying "hey, I think I'll wait and see what comes out next month." Besides, BB and CC have probably figured out that half of us will return these wonderful big Clies anyway. I'm just wondering how long the market will bear all these returns. I would hate to plunk down almost $1000 on a PDA, find out a couple of days later that it was a real pud, and then be told, "sorry, You bought it, it's yours." It could happen.
Now that would be horrible! As many problems as I've had with the hindges on the NR and the NX. But you're right. I tell you what, I will definitely get an extended warranty on the NZ. Also good point about how we the consumer have the luxury of saying," Hmmm, I think I will wait to see what Sony will release next." Also like you said, if may not be just the price, what about the SIZE! Remember guys we love the Clie, but the majority of buyers may never enter this site.
I just saw another NZ picture comparasant to other PDA's and I LIKE the NZ. It's not that much bigger, considering what you are getting. I don't care who sells it, I will find it and buy it!

I am not surprised that you may not find an $800.00 PDA in many stores. The availability of the NZ 90 will be much like the top-line IPAQ 5855 (I think it's $700.00), which is not available in many stores or the HP Jornada 720, which has always been easier to buy online because it is an expensive handheld. I bet the NZ 99 will be cheaper.

yeah but the nz 's casing has the finish of the nr which is smooth as opposed to the nx which is coarse so just color won't tell you what to expect.

How does the Best Buy upgrade work? Can you really exchange and then pay the difference? Is that documented anywhere?
Thanks,
Jeremy
I saw the NZ today!!! I stopped by Best Buy to get another memory stick and I saw a Sony rep in the PDA dept. I asked him about the NZ 90 and was BB going to carry it and just smiled at me and said,"what, you're talking about this baby here." My mouth dropped when he took it off of his waste! It's not that much bigger than the NX, I love the black finish. It felt strange in my hand, everything is different. It didn't feel too big! Alot of times I feel like I'm about to drop my NX but with the NZ it fits perfect. Man, you guys have to see the pictures it takes! I couldn't believe it! He said BB will have it in a couple of weeks. BB did have a problem with selling the NZ at first
but now I guess Sony and BB worked it out. He didn't let me play with it too much. It's basically the same machine as the NX except the camera and bluetooth. After seeing it, I'm not sold on getting it. I have the money saved and all but I think I will wait for the next Clie. I own a Sony 5.0 Mega Pixel Camera and I have no use for bluetooth if I can't get MSN. By the way, can I get MSN with bluetooth? Anyway I just thought I let you guys know the news.
I can't get it out of my head! I was un-sure at first but I'm going to buy it! You guys have to see it in person, it looks serious! I mean, if you think you got a WOW reaction when you would whip out you NX, huh wait till you see the NZ in person!

If something is wrong with your Clie, you can exchange it for another one. That's if they don't send it off to get fixed.

I guess you no longer think that Best Buy won't carry it, huh? I read your post about talking to the Sony rep and your opinion. I'm glad and encouraged to read some positive comments.

Hey Jedix, I glad that they are going to get the NZ but I will believe it when I see it. You will like it when you pick it up. I fits perfect in my hand. My friend was with me that owns a Ipaq 5455 and he said when the NZ comes out he will return the 5455 for a NZ upgrade. It's that impressive! As far as the weight diff between the NZ and the NX, it's so minor that you will adjust in minutes.

Thats a really good point, most of us in this forum already are used to the unusual weight of the NX so weight should not really be a factor in deciding to get it or not.

Last night I went to my local BB, and I couldn't even get someone to come work the PDA department. There wasn't one out, but I was going to ask if they had any under the counter, but nobody showed up in the department for 30 minutes! I also went to CC, they had two of them locked up, but none out to play with yet.

Jedix, don't you hate it! What is it with the PDA department at BB! Huh, try calling them, you will wait atleast 35 minutes to speak to anyone! Are you serious, CC had some locked up? Great! BB said the 16th is the release date, so I'm going there to check it out! Jedix, if I wanted to upgrade, do I simply return my NX and pay a extra $200? I was just going to fork out $800 to get it but people keep saying since I have the extended warranty, just upgrade. What do you think?

Yes, I saw 2 at CC! They were locked up and I couldn't get anybody to help me there, either. I love BB, but always have problems getting help. I don't know if the employees are too busy, if there aren't enough people working there, or the employees try to look busy to avoid helping people. One time, I waited over an hour just to find out if they had a certain laptop in stock, which they didn't!
As for returning an NX, it depends how honest you want to be. On one hand, you could simply ask them if they are willing toi exchange it, even though you don't have any problems with your NX. But some employees will only do it if there is a problem with your nx. iN THAT case, if you choose, you could always lie and make up a problem, such as poor battery life or something like that. But that depends onhow honest you want to be., I won't comment on the morality an whatnot, thats up to you. But remember, you can't say "my nx is fine, will you exchange?" and if they say no, change your story to "it doesn't work right"
I think I may be better off buying another one, thanks for responding. Oh, some guy in this thread said that CC would honor you BB upgrade for you business, I don't know how true that is.

Just for an FYI, Circut City "DOES" carrry the NZ90! While I bought mine on Friday night at a CUSA (just happend in and was surprised to even see them in yet, so of course I had to buy it); Saturday I went to my local CC and they had about 5 boxes neatly tucked in the cage under the PDA display. They didn't have one out for display as of Saturday afternoon. Personally, I rather purchase from CC than CUSA anyday... but with a new piece of kit, you grab em when you can find em. ENJOY!

First place I checked friday was Best Buy. People I spoke to were absolutely in the dark about it. Asked if they could look up the "status" on their computer they asked ME for a sku number? lol. "Can't do anything without a sku number" Thanks!
Went to CompUSA across the street and laid down $992 for NZ90 and wifi card. Now I just have to go back and get my free 128mb memory stick they announced today.
I just bought mine, I'm charging it now!

Yes and they had plenty! I was shocked that they sold it to me because they didn't have it displayed.
