Hello,

Is it possible to get MP-3 on a non Magic gate memory Stick? I realize I won't be able to use ATRAC-3 compression, but heck, if there's a little space left on one of my 128MB MS, maybe I can get a CD on it. Thanks!

Since you have N series Clie, load the RealJukeBox to your PC, then rip your CD to MP3 at 96 kbps recording speed. You should be able to fit 42 tracks (175 minutes) into the purple 128MB MS. Forget the MagicGate (white) MS. No worry about the "Copy Right" interruptions. You probably can get 2 purple MSs for the price of one white MS. The other day I got 128MB SanDisk MS for $27 at Amazon.

Heck, you don't even have to rip them at 96kps. I use MusicMatch for my desktop stuff and was just dropping the MP3s on my 128 MS with MS Import. I had to convert them (most were 128 kps or higher) to 96kps manually.

I was fiddling around with the Real software that came with the Clie -- which I really don't like -- and found out there's a plug in for "MP3 on Clie". It's very cool because, as it transfers the files to your MS, it AUTOMATICALLY downsamples the MP3s to the lower 96kps rate. Very cool and convenient.

I still use MusicMatch for desktop and to transfer music to my Rio, but for the Clie, the Real software is "real" convenient.

trevor_d, I think he is talking about converting CD music to MP3. If just moving MP3s from PC to MS, I can just place the Clie on the cradle, launch MSImport, drag and drop the MP3s from PC to the MS Palm/Programs/MSAudio which is displayed as E:\Removable drive in my Windows Explorer.

RealJukeBox is free and available in installation CD. Where would you get MusicMatch? Is it a freeware?

Yes, this is true. I was doing the drag and drop thing with MS Import myself, until I found the Clie plugiin for RealJukebox. That method works fine, if your file are already at 96kps. I like to rip them at greater kps than that; just personal preference. This way, with the plug-in, I don't have to downsample my 128kps files to 96 kps manually.

There is a freeware demo version of MusicMatch at www.musicmatch.com, but I paid the $19.95 for the plus version long ago. It's worth it.

Thank you all for the info. I have not used MS Import, but I know it is on my Clie. If anyone knows how this works, please pass on the info.

Thanks so much!

It works just like USB card reader. I use my Clie as a card reader often to transfer pictures and MP3s back and forth between my laptop and my wife's PC via MS. I made a very short USB-Clie travel adapter (4" overall length from USB tip to the Clie plug pinout tip) to fit it in my pants pocket.

I don't use HotSync (Palm Desktp for CLIE Install) anymore for installing apps or database to MS. It is just way too slow and use MSImport as described in the previous post.

To use MSImport in your PC, you may need to install MSExport, which contains MS driver, to PC from the installation CD-ROM. Once you installed MSExport, put your Clie on the cradle, tap MSImport on your Clie, go to the Windows Explorer in your PC. You will see the content of your MS in Removable Disk.

If you use Windows XP, which will recognize new device driver automatically, you may not need to install the MSExport. My brother has a laptop with Windows XP and does not use PDA. One day I want to get a 4MB picture from his laptop, so I just stick my Clie to his laptop via USB travel adapter and tap MSImport. He was able to see my MS in the Removable Disk drive, then he just dragged and dropped the picture to the MS.

New MP3 user with my the NX60. Since I have never used MP3 I have a couple questions.

1) What is the easiest to use MP3 desktop app to convert and playback.

2) what folder do you put the MP3's into on the MS using MSimport?

3) I have not installed the NX updates yet so what MP3 playback speed should I convert to pre update and post update?

Thanks,
Michael

1. I use RealJukeBox that comes with N760C and is included in the installation CD-ROM. It's pretty easy to use. I don't know what comes with NX60 and haven't tried others. For sure I won't use the OpenMG Jukebox since I use the purple MS. You should check the NX series posts for better info. in this subject

2. See my earlier post, above.

3. Not sure if NX series have software updates for MP3. Check this site (http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/nx60/) for detail. The default recording speed for my dinosurus N760C with RealJukebox is 96 kbps at 44.1 KHz (something like that) for ripping MP3 from CD regardless pre or post software updates. Others can be different.

As far as recording speed, the lower the kbps, the lower audio quality, the less the memory used/track, and, of course, the more you can stuff tracks into the MS. At 96 kbps, my ears can't tell the difference between the CD and MP3 sound qualities. I tried to rip CD to MP3 with 64 and 56 kbps with the RealJukebox, but the AudioPlayer would not play the music.

I have a N710 and cannot find MSImport. Am I missing it? Or is it not included in the software?

MSImport is part of ROM apps loaded to the Clie itself, not in the Installation CD-ROM. I guess N710 comes with Palm OS 3.5.2, not 4.1, so it is quite possible that it does not include MSImport in ROM. You may need to upgrade it to 4.1.

Why do you guys convert the mp3? personally I perfer quality over quantity. On my N770c Only some VBR mp3's didn't play correct. Most did, on my NX70v, everything plays correct.
I only use msimport and my MS-cardreader

I like quality, too, but you're missing the point. You're on the N-series board, not the NX board. My N610C can't play anything at a higher rate than 96kps (well it can, sometimes...) When I rip tracks from CDs, I don't settle for less than 128 kps and often go higher if the content warrants it.

And, really, for portable listening, 96 kps is plenty.
