I bought a WLAN card for the NX last night. Talk about a battery killer!!!! I "stumbled" across an open network in the development I'm in and before you know it I was at 23%, not to mention spending a full hour for lunch!!! Bad...

Is the WLAN card "always on," like the IR beam on a palm device? Once it locks on to a signal it tries to communicate?

In Network prefs you have to tap on the connect button to activate the card (or use a web browser that activates the network connection for you upon launch). Thereafter you can either set the browser prefs to automatically disconnect on exit or manually turn off the connection in network prefs. The card should have minimal drain when the Clie is not connected.

Thanks PDA gal. Still new to the world of WiFi. So it is safe to say if you forget to manually disconnect, it will sit around searching for a signal or at the very least remain activated and drain the battery.

Yep, it'll stay connected to the wireless access point until the Clie shuts off or you go beyond the range of the access point. If you have the Clie set to turn off after x minutes of inactivity, it will still turn off even while connected. I've even had it power off while reading long web pages! Guess I need speed reading courses ;)

Excellent. Thank you for the good word. Once I get my NZ, I can worry about the WLAN card, then worry about access points and then . . . Hmph, maybe I will stick with Avantgo.
