Hi,
I just spend the weekend ripping DVDs to my NX70V. To date, video had been problematic for me. What I usually find is that an MQV will play fine but:
1. I cannot seek around the video while the video is playing
2. I cannot seek around the video while the video is stopped
3. Playback framerate becomes jerky if I resume playback after powering down the machine.
The only way to have a perfect playback is if I watch a movie from start to finish with at most a start/stop (but not a power-down) in between. Not very convenient to say the least.
So I decided to really tackle this this weekend. To re-cap, here's my config:
NX70-V (with the 4 Sony patches: MSPro, CLIE Viewer, CLIE Files, and System Update)
Viking 512Mb CF card
EruWare 1.2 driver (Dual MS checked, no other option set)
After a lot of experimenting, I found that the key is simply framerate. From my observation with fiddling with seeking around a video, I found that the problem occurs when I have a HQ or Standard quality video. With a LP video, there was problem with seeking while the video was in playback mode but not while the video is stopped. So I guessed that the key was framerate. Thanks to Hans Schmucker, there's now a tool to adjust Image Converter's conversion parameters. The key to my problem was to reduce the framerate. By turn down the framerate to 12fps, I found the output to be marginally smaller and almost indistinguishable from the "stock" 14.5fps.
My theory is that EurWare's driver is somehow "slower" and unable to allow Movie Player to seek in the movie. I know that this doesn't really make sense since CF is solid state and allow random seeks. But what I observed was that when I have problem with playback, the play button doesn't light up green as it would when things were working. However, if I wait long enough, the situation sorta corrects itself with the playback sorta resuming and the play button lighting up green as expected.
Anyways, I'm really happy now. I've been busy today ripping Hitchcock's Vertigo and the special extended version of The Fellowship of the Ring and the picture is really nice and I can actually watch and stop as required. Mondo cool for wow-factor.
Hope this helps some of you out there.
