I had lost my addresses on my Clie due to a hard reboot. When I did a Hot Sync to my Sony Palm desktop I got back only the basic stuff. I got no addresses and when I went to check the addresses on my desktop the addresses were gone from there too. When I tried to Hot Sync with my desktop PC at home which I had just recently sync'ed my Clie to, the same thing happen the addresses on my desktop were gone and did not get installed on my Clie. I had the custom setting set to sycronizce.

I have found a file with my addresses on yet another computer, copied the file to a floppy, copied to the address file on my laptop, from the size of the file it looked like it was copied. When I went to Hot Scyn no addresses got transferred, and again the file on my desktop got cleared out. I renamed the address file on my Palm Desktop PC, thinking it may have been corupted, copied the entire address file to a new address file on the PC, Hot Sync'ed and again the addressed file on my PC was cleared out.

As the Hot Sync ended a messages flash which appeared to say Clean Up. What is going on here, what does this clean up mean and does it have anything to do with this? There is no sign of this Clean Up in the log and it says Addresses OK. I have re-enter about 4 addresses and they are unaffected by these latest Hot Sync's.

After a hot sync when lots of apps get updated I often get a "cleaning up" message. I figured that it was referring to purged stuff.

But purge all my addresses. This must be Cleaning Up going a stray. If so how do I fix it so it stops cleaning out my address file.

Go into your hot sync app -> Custom... and change the settings for your address book to "Desktop overwrites Handheld". Otherwise it's trying to sync them and since you've *obviously* (to the program) deleted all your addresses on your handheld you would want them all deleted from your desktop as well.

Once with this setting should do it.

Thanks, I thought I had done that, in fact numerous times, but after your reply, I tried it one more time and it worked. Must be the computer gremlins were playing with my mind. Life is good again.
