Today, I when tried to open up Palm Desktop and got an error indicating that the Datebook database could not be opened. The Dr. Watson took care of the rest.
I did a hotsync, with handheld overwrites desktop. The hotsync ran, but errored out on the PC and Dr. Watson closed it down.
That fixed the Datebook database, but then I got the same error with Addresses. I changed them all to handheld overwrites desktop and everthing was fine with the hotsync, until it got to PsysLaunchDB.pdb. Everytime the hotsync tried to backup that file, I get the Dr. Watson.
I ended up deleting that file and letting the launcher recreate it, and now I can hotsync fine.
Anyone have any idea what might have caused these issues?

Am currently experiencing similar problems attempting to open Palm Desktop. Mine have risen from having to format my hard drive and re-install EVERYTHING.
Since I hadn't HotSync'd in a week, I figured there was a conflict with the dates. I saw this post, tried to do the same, but it still is not working.
To give specific details:
Double-click on Palm Desktop ->
Error: Failed to open Date Book database
Click "OK" ->
Palm has caused an error in MFC42.DLL
Palm will now close
Have done search outside of this forum, but everything I find regards a conflict with printing (?).
Any help/ideas/answers/encouragement appreciated.

All I did was to set the Datebook conduit to "Handheld overwrites Desktop."
I wish I could offer more...

After much more searching and an uninstall/reinstall, I've gotten past the problem.
FYI:
The above solution works partially, as do bits and pieces of other fixes I found.
Dr. Watson was good to narrow down a little, but I believe unnecessary.
What I did:
Using Windows Explorer (almost called it "File Tree") I moved the .DAT files for each primary Palm app (Date Book, Address, To Do and Memopad) from my user folder to somewhere else. I was then able to open Palm Desktop. Then I reset the HotSync manager for each app to be sync'd as "Handheld overwrites the Desktop".
The following HotSync created new .DAT files and everything seems fine. The .DAT files I previously moved appear to be useless, so into the trash they go...
As far as WHY this happened, it beats me. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with Windows, though...
Cheers.

Glad to hear it. FYI, you can start the hotsync manager independently of the Palm Desktop, should this ever happen again. That way, you don't have to move the .dat files.
Take care,
