View Full Version : just broke my handspring visor and am thinking of replacing it with a Sony

I have been using my handspring visor deluxe and my quicksilver G4 without problems until I dropped the visor and it shattered into a million pieces. I am using the latest versions of iSync, iCal, and MacOS 10.2.3. I've last synced with my Mac 3 days ago, and want to be able to seamlessly sync with my new handheld. I mainly use my date book and address book functions.

My local Best Buy is selling the Sony Clié Personal Entertainment Organizer Model: PEG-SJ20 for $179. I like the looks and the 16 mb memory. Will I encounter any compatibility problems as far as syncing and getting my old information from my computer? Will I simply be able to push the sync button and watch it work?

I've read that I might need the missing sync software. Will I need it for this model and for my basic PalmOS functions?

Any other comments/advice would be very appreciated.

They said that Isync and I call should work with clie. But some people I have heard were still having problems. My best bet is that you will need the missing sync soon or later.

Hi, Walker,

I did just about the same thing--carried my Visor Prism to work in the front pocket of my pants one day, and opened the case to find a cracked screen.

My loving wife--I'm blessed with a geek for a spouse--surprised me with a T615C (I was going to replace the Prism with a refurb Platinum).  So far, I've had no problems syncing with the Palm Desktop or the Mac Address Book right out of the box.

iCal is a little funky, but I think that's a problem with the software that Apple will have to resolve.  I prefer the Palm Desktop anyway.

The only advantage to having Missing Sync is the ability to mount the MS as an external drive, similar to the way MS Import allows you to do with a Windows PC.  Instead of going that route, I bought a USB Memory Stick reader. A little more versatile, as we can use the MS with our Sony Handycam, too.

I had to disable iSync all together. I think Apple needs to work on it some more! If your T615C syncs with your Mac out of the box, then you really don't need the missing sync unless you want to be able to access your MS directly or take pictures via the MS camera (your loving wife might have to surprise you again!). I have even been able to mount MS's from other Sony devices!

I too started with the Handspring line, and although I do miss the beautiful form factor and clean lines of the Visor Edge (especially the size!...), I absolutley LOVE my Clie! :D

Congradulations and welcome to the family!

I've read the above posts, but just to be clear...

I had a Visor Prism and used Palm desktop 4.0.1 to hotsync and install files, etc. I now want to purchase a Clie NZ90, and sell my Visor Prism. Provided I delete all my extra application backup conduits from my Prism (the ones besides the usual OS apps) can I just sync my NZ90 (when I get it of course) w/o installing any other software?
Will a clie work straight out of the box w/ my mac that already has palm desktop 4 installed??
thanks

in theory you can sync a nz90 with the mac straight out of the box, however, since no one around here has one it is still just a theory.

what most people have found is that clie's w/o mp3 capabilities can sync w/ no problem, but that those with mp3 (like the nz90) need missing sync.

either way, i would advise getting missing sync. it has proven to be more faithful about syncing with very few problems. it will allow you to mount the memory stick on the desktop (very handy for file transfers that won't move with a regular hotsync). it also provides conduit for itunes and iphoto.

Thanks Parmesian,
I think I will do just that.
by the way I've sold my Prism, and most all accesories.. so I plan on getting an NZ as soon as they are available. I'll let you all know how it works w/ hotsyncing to 0s 9.2 and missing sync.

Warning, I'm not a Mac guy so please excuse my ignorance. I was just browsing through and see that you can't mount the Memory Stick drive in OS X? Is that really true? I'm kinda shocked since it should look just like any USB hard disk to the OS and those have been standardized for a while. Can any removable USB drives work?

Hi, no need to excuse. it's pretty clear to mac users, sony hates us. The dsp chip (for mp3 encoding) sends another (non standard) signal to the usb port, not recognised by the OS. We have true plug and play (not like windohs: plug and pRay), but the memorystick is not recognised without drivers. Other (standard) usb drives work fine

Ok, I was always under the impression that Mac's had much better Plug n Play so I would have thought that it woud work fine but never realized that the Clie wasn't using a standard method to mount a drive. Thanks.

-to powerbookje,
I go back and forth trying to decide if I should upgrade to os x? I have a lot of non native os x programs, therefore I would have to switch back and forth between os's... seems like too much could go wrong? But your probably right, I should upgrade! Heck I am upgrading to an NZ so I shouldn't be soo damn scared to upgrade my system OS!

i was also very nervous about making the leap to osx, but i am happy to say that all of my non-native programs run wonderfully in the classic mode. it took a couple of hours to get all the nitpicky things just right, but since then there have been no problems.

osx is so stable that for the past five months i have only restarted my computer after installing software. other than that i have never had a crash ---- absolutely amazing as far as i am concerned. i don't remember a week that went by under the old os that i didn't have at least a couple of crashes.

That is exactly what I did. However, you will need to go to the markspace website and buy Missing Sync and install it. For the NZ90 you need to get the v3.0.5 beta program.

I had a prism, hot synced it and then did the restore straight into the NZ90 with no problems. To be safe, and because I had a backup module, I backed it up first both by hot sync and by copying to the module.

Other than that, the transition was seamless. The speed and screen on the NZ90 are terrific!

I just bought a NZ90 a few days ago to replace my handspring prism.

I had planned on several days to get this to work.

I bought the missing sync software from markspace and installed it. Didn't work until I got the 3.0.5 demo stuff.

Installed 3.0.5 and it worked first time. I restored from my Prism last hotsync, also worked flawlessly.

I am now about to try the memory stick mount and the iTunes capability when i get a memory stick today.

Works fine with OSX. What I would really like to see is a decent case now.
