Come on, somebody has to make a program to play divx movies right off of a memory stick. I am tired of all the BS involved to watch a divx (i.e. convert to avi, convert to kinoma...) I wanna just drag and drop and play em... Why hasnt anyone made a program yet? Also some one should make an alternative mp3 player app for the 33. Maybe the DivX and MP3 player could be one in the same, like a super awesome media player in full color that works! wow maybe im just dreaming, but come on the 33 has enough processing power to watch divx, right?

66MHz is not gonna decode Divx on the fly, not even my old Pentium Pro 133MHz PC, even if it could, who want's to watch a full length movie on their PDA anyways, if someone want to show off that their PDA could play movies, then Kinoma is more than enough for that need. You could always get a PPC if you need to play Divx.

I find that only the NX/NZ clies are good for full length movies. But for maybe TV episodes I think the T665/SJ33/NR are ok for this purpose (with the kinoma you mentioned).

i feel that the built in movie player/convert is alot better then kinoma

sorry to break it to ya, but I don't feel like 66mhz is fast enough for movies.... unless your standards for frame rate are low.

Like someone else posted, your best bet is to use Kinoma or get a PPC. =(

I remember I had a 400Mhz Celeron that dropped quite a few frames playing Divx movies. MMPlayer is starting to add Divx support to OS5 Clies, but even then, those devices will barely be able to handle it.

Mhz is not the only factor that will let you or not let you play movies effectively. Mhz's are a very poor way to measure the performance of a device.

Thats a very good point. A PC that is 200MHz, would still have much more power than a Clie with 200Mhz since the PC would have other chipsets that would assist the main CPU. While, on a PDA, the CPU does the majority of the work with very little help.

what i mean is why cant someone out there develop a "media player" for the clie SJ that plays my mp3's, divx, mpeg, whatever... With a slick GUI and capability for all popular formats it woudl be a sure hit, without constircting us to the factory installed mp3 player, or kinoma... It would be a MUST HAVE for me to have an mp3 player with more features...

Ok... Well, its obvious that my SJ33 doesn't have the capability to play DIVX. Is there a way out there to convert those files into something that Kinoma can convert to something watchable?

Or (and maybe this isn't really the place for this question), but is there a way to convert a DIVX file such that I make an MP3 of just the audio...?

The reason someone doesn't develop an app that plays Divx is because the device simply is not powerful enough. The same reason a Ford Escort can reach 200MPH. It's just not possible.

VirtualDub is an app that can convert Divx movies to other formats, such as some that Kinoma will work with. As for converting the sound to MP3, VirtualDub might do it, otherwise look for an app called Divx-to-MP3, or Divx-to-WAV. I've used an app before to rip the audio from Divx files and it was named something like that.

It is possible... So someone should make a well designed media app - the mp3 player stock on the sj33 looks like an old DOS programs with jagged pizels and everything, and everyone says the sony's have the best screens - so why not exploit them!

K, so maybe it can. But how many people would watch 5 seconds of video take 3 hours, only to have their chip melt out of the casing? Not many. So it's not profitable. So there is your answer. It is not profitable for somebody to invest the time to develope this app. If it is that important for you, learn how to do it. Necessity is the mother of invention.

And if you make it good, then they will come, and pay you!

Hmmm, so should I pursue recording 20 or 30 minute TV shows for viewing on my SJ33? I seem to be seeing conflicting information depending on where I ask.

Using Kinoma, you should be able to fit 30 minute TV shows just fine. I'm not sure exactly what size they would come out to, but Kinoma producer lets you tweak the settings to help you shrink the size down if it's too big. I imagine a 25 minute video would take about 80MB, but thats just a guess.

Interesting.
Sounds like it's worth playing with at least.
