View Full Version : Doing the 'FATAL ALERT' shuffle...

Right out of the box, before I even had the chance to customize the darn thing, I think I have gone through about 6 fatal alerts and 3 resets... Does this sound familiar to anyone? I was wandering through the settings via the 'prefs' panel and ran into three fatal alerts just for wanting to peek. *sigh* :(

Sounds like you need to exchange it

this is a software issue, as some of the previous programs you have are incompatible with operating system 5. You will have to go through each and delete one by one to find out which one it is.

How can taht be if he said right out of the box? I take it means he hasnt installed anything on it.
I would exchange it just in case.

Or "I take it" you haven't hotsynced from your old Palm Desktop software??? Maybe some offending software was installed from the backup. Have you synced from a previous palm???

Did you let your clie charge enough before using it? When I first got my Clie, I got tons of fatal alerts too because the clie wasn't charged enough. Sounds wierd, but its true. I thought i had a bad clie, but just waited until I charged it enough, turned it on and everything was fine after that.

I charged it the full four hours (VERY hard to wait!) and I was just looking around to see the differences, all the high res stuff, ect. When I wandered over into 'prefs', WHAM, alot of fatal errors and resets. I am going to exchange it today as many have suggested well... I am still hopefull and excited! Although I must admit, my ideal color would be gunmetal, but I haven't seen ANY of these at Best Buy.

I got about a dozen fatal alerts within the first hour of owning mine. So I did a hard reset and it fixed everything

Sometimes, factory people play with the products before packaging them.

Maybe nose boogers in the works?

Well, the charge light of the new one just went off, so now I get to go through the battery conditioning process. *sigh*
On the brighter side, I am pleased to say, I have had NO fatal alerts or resets!!! :D :D :D

Battery conditioning??
I am glad you got a working unit now, good luck and enjoy!

Thanx! You can get more usage out of your battery by conditioning it. For the first charge, charge it for 6 hours, drain it (no charging in between!) and repeat twice more (BACK YOUR STUFF UP!). After this you can repeat the process once every two months. This will keep the battery in good condition, longer and will allow more usage per charge. It's a pain, but it works!
BTW I friggin LOVE this thing!!! I am going to have SOOOO much fun tomorrow shooting video!!! YEAH!!! :D :p :D
We need a new forum! Clie films!!!

Hmmm... Actually, from my understanding, battery conditioning is only necessary for NiCad and NiMH batteries because of the memory effect. This memory effect reduces the usable cap of the battery and therefore conditioning once a month was necessary. Today's Li-ion batteries have no memory effect at all. And it is possible to charge the battery at any point of time. However, Li-ions suffer from a lower number of charge cycles than NiCad and MiMH and thus has a shorter life-span. As the battery ages, it's capacity slowly reduces.
Also, Li-Ions are susceptible to damage from overcharge and over discharge. But of course, these new batteries have protection circuits and as long as the original chargers are used, there shouldn't be problems... :)

I whole heartedly agree, conditioning is not a very good idea, nor is it necessary! You run the real risk of severely shortening the Lithium battery's life span.

I have had the chance to see this in action, after it was suggested to me by a Best Buy 'technician'. I went through two NR's as well. The first, I chaged and used right out of the box, the second, I battery conditioned. The second battery retained fuller charges MUCH longer in heavy use and perfomed better. You could say that perhaps the second might have had a better battery, but the process works for me. The issue is healthy (full or close to full capacity) charge CYCLES (not memory) and getting as many charge cycles out of my LiIon devices as possible. I have used this process with my cell phone as well, and it works!
Conditioned batteries hold a charge closer to their full capacity, longer and over more charge cycles than non-conditioned ones.
As for it not being a good idea, this process cannot hurt your battery any more than your normal process of usage and charging.

Well, if it works for you, than that's great! ;)
But i was just giving the technical aspects of how li-ion batteries work.
One other thing about the battery is that it takes a couple of charge cycles initially before the battery actually obtains it's full capacitiy so a battery out of the box won't be able to get a full charge on its first go.

Not to be a wise guy or anything, but I'd really like to know what legitimate sources or laboratory tests back up your statement?
I have had tons of experience with batteries of all types. In regards to ni-cads I would agree, but have not found it to be the case with rechargeable Lithiums.
I am not saying your wrong, but I have not seen or experienced anything conclusive for me to agree with you.
I have Lithiums for my Clies, laptops, cellular phones, cameras, and two way communication radios. So does my younger brother, who also repaired cellular phones. I have spent a small fortune if I take inventory of all the Lithium battteries I have used over the past few years.
If you have any info to share with us, please do, Thanks!

I have nothing but the suggestions made by technicians from Best Buy, Sprint (minions of Satan, I swear), AT&T wireless, and personal expirience. I don't have, nor have sought out, any other conclusive 'proof', mostly because it was never that big of a deal to me, and I'm to lazy to give it much more thought! Having used, gone through and even 'nuked' many Lithium based devices, I believe I have enough observational expirience to make the statement that this works. Conditioned Lithium-Ion batteries seem to last longer and allow me to not charge as often. I do admit that I prefer to allow my devices to drain quite a bit before I charge them , no technique here, I just charge later than sooner (hmmm, I also fuel my car at the last moment as well, I wonder if the two are related...). I have progressed from a Visor Edge, which I would charge once every two weeks, too the NX which is too new to judge. I'm on my second drain and have been shooting video and taking pictures all day (I'm up too an hour and a half of video!) at 1/3 brightness and the battery reads at 73%, which I think is pretty decent.
Sorry about the 'right-o' comment, its been a long day.

No problem, we all have our moments:). Thank you for the reply and it's a subject I would like to dig into a little deeper.

What we need is a secret lab and dozens of Clies (provided by Sony), to expirement on... We should also get the newest prototypes... just to be fair!
On a more serious note, it would be very interesting to here from other people and what they do to extend the battery life.
