View Full Version : Backing up without another memory stick...

Using an NX70V and only one memory stick I want to back up the clie (using memory stick backup I think, but I haven't used it before). It looks to me as if I should have one memory stick that I just use for back ups, and keep (at least one) for data and general use.

I don't want to lose the data and applications that I've got installed on my current memory stick, and if possible want to avoid shelling out for another stick. So the question is, would the following work:

Using MSimport, copy the entire contents of the memory stick into a new folder on the PC's desktop (i know this bit works as I've done it...)

delete everything from the memory stick (format it?)

Use MS backup to back up the clie to the memory stick.

Copy the memory stick contents to a different folder on the PC's desktop.

delete the memory stick contents again

copy the original contents back from the desktop folder to the memory stick

I sounds to me as if it should work, but will registered programmes still work if I have to restore a back up from the desktop at some time in the future?

I'd appreciate views on this as it would be a bit of a downer to try it and then find out that i didn't work and I'd lost the registrations of some installed applications...

Thanks in advance

I do . . . a backup won't overwrite any information, and will tell you when you don't have enough room to do a backup.

That would work, but what a huge PAIN! Your programs will stay registered, as the info you entered is kept as a pref file in your MAIN ram . . .

First, you need to back up . . . daily is better, but once a week at the very least. The day will come when you'll be glad you did, and hotsync restores tend to lose a lot of info (like reg #s!) (And keeping a backup of your memstick is probably not a bad idea either - the day may come when something there becomes corrupted & you have to re-format to be able to use it again . . . )

Second, get SplashID or something similar. It's a password protected app, with a desktop portion and a PDA portion for storing registration numbers, then you won't have to worry about 'losing' them. ;)

Smaller memory sticks are not that expensive. Backing up the memory stick is a good idea. Keeping several rolling backups is even better, both of the memory stick and RAM. As YelloRose states, if you got room on the stick you have now, it should be no problem to backup to. HotSync backups to the desktop is all too easily corrupted and will be useless most of the time.

Thanks for the advice. I'd managed to get it into my head that you had to back up onto a memory stick without anything else on it. Realising that you can backup onto a stick that's in general use makes it all a lot more obvious.

Backed up Ok now.

Sounds like I'll get another memory stick - as you say, small ones don't cost much.

get backup buddy -- it'll back up to your computer. this won't help you recover when you're away from your computer. but it doesn't require a MS.

I don't know if BackupBuddy is okay for OS5. Try the demo first and make sure that it does work!

BackupBuddy is nogo for OS5 and unfortunately, I've not found anything to replace it.

There are two programs to help you keep good backups:

To have automated backups of your memory stick get a program called Bluesync (find it with Google). It will maintain incremental backups of your memory card onto your PC when you hotsync.

For the Clie itself, CardBackup works great. You can schedule a nightly backup (I have mine set for 3 am). I also have a weekly backup every Friday so if something fouls the nightly backup, I have last Friday's to go back to. www.jkware.com.
