I have LOTR Return of the King and I am using CSPOT Run ... is there a way to store the ebook in my MS and run it off from there... what folder should I place it in???

I havn't used CSPOT in a while.. I'm not sure if it searches the card or not. I'd say Palm/Programs/cspot/ is a good start. Many of the newer e-book readers will scan the whole card, so you can put them where ever you want. I'm using DeepReader right now, and it is great.

I use PalmReader and the books are in Palm/Books folder.

i don't really read ebooks.. so I couldn't justify purchasing one.. is Palm Reader or Deep Reader free?

CSpotRun won't read directly from your MS - you'd have to install it on the pda. PalmReader, even the free version, will - it does it by extracting small segments to autoinstall onto the pda, leaving most of the text on the MS.

so that means.. I should be using Palm Reader because it's free and I can store the ebook on my stick???

Cool.

CSpotRun does not handle VFS at all. So you need the documents in RAM.

How about ISilo. After the evaluation period, you can still use the document reader, the other features will be disabled. You can place documents into /Palm/isilo in the MS.

Thanks Yorrick, cool idea... is Isilio a big file? I don't have too much room to spare... =P

I've found PalmReader works better for me as it would find docs on the MS in different formats, where iSilo wouldn't always do that.

Download the books/docs you want to your desktop, put your pda in the cradle or connect via cable to your comp and turn on the MSImport app. Then drag your book to MSExport and it will be installed on the MS. When you open up PalmReader on the pda, open whichever item you want to read without having to transfer it to the pda. Couldn't be easier.

PalmReader is 166kb in RAM and can be downloaded from:
http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=75605620030109120040&prodID=39195
and the help pages from http://www.palmdigitalmedia.com/S=0b049029b58506e41a1c6b7bdedf0805PjYGpcCoAAsAABxBhKw1705995/faq.cgi

ISilo can is 350kb be downloaded from http://www.isilo.com

The directory in which to place the documents in MS for them to be read off is:
PalmReader is /Palm/Books or /Palm/Launcher
Isilo is /Palm/Programs/Isilo

Hope this helps.

I use MobiPocket 4.5, which is free, occupies 500K (but can be run from the MS on ZLauncher) and it reads the books from the MS card w/o any problems. I just finished The Hobbit, after the whole Harry POtter shebang.

I find mobipocket reader is less well featured whilst consuming a huge amount of memory. To add to the angst, I find it runs painfully slow (even when accelerated with FastCPU).

I tend to stick to Isilo or Tealdoc, clean, simple and has a few nice to have functionality which makes it easier to use.

It does not consume memory as it runs from the MS :D

It is a bit slowish at the start, but once you are in a book, speed does not matter, does it?

I use iSilo daily for offline internet news reading and TealDoc for some books I cannot read on MobiPocket. IMHO they use a bit too much real estate on the top and bottom of the screen (which I can remove on Mobi).

I use both Palmreaderpro and Isilo for different reasons; palmreader for ebooks and isilo for medical docs. Both do a great job and are worth purchasing.

I'm not into fancy book reader and the free version of PalmReader v.1.0.6 (233KB) suits my need. I put it in MS (Palm/Launcher) to save my RAM space for apps that require speed.

I use TealDoc for most of my doc reading. It will read doc files from any directory on the memory sitck.

You can download TealDoc from www.tealdoc.com.

Correction. I goofed when typing in the URL. TealDoc can be downloaded from www.tealpoint.com

I concur re MobiPocket - large program and slow to load, so I deleted it. I prefer Palm Reader, but also use ReadThemAll and CSpotRun for short stuff that I don't mind loading on the pda if I have room. That way I can be in the middle of a number of books/docs without losing my place and can quickly launch any of the ones I'm reading without having to go through the 'open' menu, etc.

For my generic Palm DOC files I usually use TealDOC to read them because it allows me to keep them all separated and categorized by author on my MS. TealDOC can easily open a file from any folder on your MS, which not many other readers are able to do yet. It also has a very clean interface, and several fonts to choose from (although not as many as it should have, or that low-res PDAs have :().

Unfortunately, not all of my books are in plain Palm DOC format. I have a dozen or so from PalmDigitalMedia.com, which requires the PalmReader program to open. Like DanT, I get along just fine with the free version of PalmReader, and have a tutorial for using it at http://www.LaunchPlug.com/PalmReader.html

The only thing I don't like about the free PalmReader is that there are only two font sizes... one is just a bit too small, and the other is way to big. Otherwise, it works out well for me.

Cheers.

How can you tell a generic doc? I'm using 3 readers because if I don't, the books don't display correctly. CSpot run works with my embid stuff, PalmReader works with my Palm Digital Media stuff and MobiPocket works for my Baen Free library stuff. I don't mind having 3 readers because then I can have 3 books going:)

can anyone tell me which folder in MS, should the doc-2-go files be put into or created, so i can read them directly?

Lee

That I can tell, DocsToGo doesn't put them on your memory stick. Once you use it though, you can then have MSGate move it to the MS from internal (your pda), or some other of the various MS management apps. available (McFile,FileZ for example). If you want to put something directly from your desktop onto the MS, use MSExport/Import. If it doesn't already send them to the address (/Palm/Programs/MSFiles) , use MSGate to open that file address, then go back to MSExport/Import and put the file on your MS. You should then be able to view a list of the various Read and other files at that address using MSGate. And when you use any of the reader apps., use the 'open' or 'select' menu, it should show a list of the docs available to read, assuming you use a VFS compatible reader such as PalmReader.

Additional info, use if needed: when using MSGate, you access these various addresses by starting MSGate, going to the MS, and alternately tapping the folder you want or the little folder icon with arrow in the address line up above.

To add a few more options:

www.memoware.com, under Palm Help, tells you a lot about formats, readers, etc.

PalmReader and iSilo are great and free (at least in part).

WordSmith will work (at least the full version does) but it is so danged SLOW using the MS it is not really worth it!

DeepReader is one of the coolest readers around! Be sure to get the latest version, however, for the MS.

YiShow launcher is also a pretty dang decent document reader and works seamlessly with memory sticks. (It is also a good picture displayer, file manager, etc.)

AportisDoc is suposed to work as well, but I have not tried it for anything in a while, so don't remember much about it.

thanx for clearing that up. i was hoping that there'd be a specific folder for direct access e.g. /palm/books, without having to go through the 'open file' thing. but i gues i'll have to make do with the msfiles directory.

I could be wrong but I remember from a ways back that Aportis started it all, creating the AportisDoc format (now called PalmDoc) and reader.

I started using PeanutReader (now PalmReader) when it came out and have pretty much stuck with over the years. I tried MobiPocket a few times but always quickly went back to PalmReader. Isilo is a great program, but I just don't feel it's a great book reader. Tibr is a good reader, and with the help of Plucker it does many of the things the full ($) version of ISilo does as well as JPluck for reading RSS feeds.

So many choices...:)
